“Gourmet Weekend package”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

We booked the Gourmet Weekend Package as a birthday treat for my partner. We stayed in the Swaledale room for 2 nights, it was very fresh with everything having its place. The bed was enormous (6ft wide) and comfy. The bathroom had been recently renovated giving a modern feel with luxury toiletries by Molton Brown. The view was of the back car park but we were made aware of this before booking not that we spent any time at all looking out of our window!! The drive up to the hotel is stunning words couldn't do it justice.

We dined in Samuel's restaurant, which is 3AA rosettes,on the first night (this is the second time we have been for food here) it was just as good if not better this time round.
There was a good selection of dishes and the chef catered for our dietary requirements.
The staff were very very friendly and attentive however we did have some language barriers with some of the staff, it didn't effect the service but took slightly longer to get our requests understood.

Cookery experience - As part of the gourmet package 2 cookery demonstrations were included hosted by Stephen Bulmer, head of the cookery school. During the demonstrations we were joined by a local butcher who was North East England and Yorkshire winner for his luxury sausages. He led an interesting demo carving a lamb showing us each cut of meat. We learnt a lot! Later that day during the second demonstration Stephen cooked a fantastic dish using the lamb cuts and local fresh produce.
As part of the first demo we were also lucky enough to sample Masons Gin with the creators, again learning a wealth of information about Gin.

We had 2 wine tasting sessions sampling 5 wines each night. Pedro was very informative and we were lucky enough to be joined by the hotel manager Tom Lewis who certainly knows his wines giving some great tips on how to get the most out of our wine.

The second nights evening meal was in the private dining room joined by 19 other gourmet weekenders. We thoroughly enjoyed 6 courses of food paired with wine complimenting each course. Again the chef was able to adhere to our dietary requirements.

On both days there was a self service afternoon tea which was delicious, there was a good range of food which we couldn't resist a try of everything. The staff continuously refilled plates ensuring there was enough for everyone.

Breakfast each morning again was faultless, a wide range of selection of hot made to order food and a help yourself continental buffet.

In addition to the gourmet package my partner enjoyed an hour long treatment in the spa. I did assume I would be able to use the spa facilities while my partner was being seen to, however this is private use only and must be booked in advance. However the treatment was great, the girl providing the treatment was lovely making the experience all the more enjoyable.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and was certainly worth the money. The 2 days were very well planned out allowing us to experience everything there was to offer.

We definitely recommend this package or even any element of our stay at Swinton Park.

Room Tip: We were told the bathrooms are more modern in the rooms with less of a view. However didn't see...

I really cannot find a fault. Rooms, service, food; all excellent, if not better. The attention to detail is so impressive - pre-dinner drinks in the room, dog blanket and mat provided, a boot room with coats and umbrellas to borrow if it's raining, small bikes for children, dog towels. If only all hotels were as good as this.

Having just returned from another week at Swinton Park Castle it never ceases to impress. As you'd expect, the Castle is absolutely stunning and luxurious. Words alone can not do it justice. Of course the rooms and views are breathtaking. And simply watching the deer come down to graze by the lake is the best form of stress relief you can imagine. The lakes and waterfalls provide stunning backdrops as you walk throughout their extensive grounds. And just when you think you've seen and discovered everything, you stumble across an armchair and coffee table carved from a tree stump!

Obviously the food is of the highest standard and absolutely delicious, although can get a little repetitive if staying more than a few days. And yes there are some beautiful touches from the freshly cut flowers to decanters of whisky and gin in your room. And lets not forget the welcoming open fires where you can kick off your shoes and relax with a hot toddy after a long winter walk. (Or the orangery where you can relax with an ice cold drink in the summer). Yes there's all that. But what really makes it so special is the staff. Every single member of staff is friendly, welcoming, unpretentious and can not do enough for you. They genuinely make you feel like a king and queen and yet they still maintain their own individual personalities and sense of humour rather than being turned into robots, as is apparent at some other, so called, "luxury hotels".

So if you're reading these reviews and are in ANY doubt whether you should book or not then rest assured, you will NOT be disappointed if you stay here. Some may argue it's pricey. Obviously it isn't the cheapest hotel around. But is it the best? Most definitely.

I booked this Hotel as a treat for my partner Johns Birthday, I have been to Masham loads of times but never noticed this Hotel, what a hidden gem From the moment we arrived all the Staff are so attentive and obliging, nothing is too much trouble.
Our room was lovely and spacious with a massive comfy bed and very spacious bathroom plus complimentary gin and whisky (a lovely touch).
We booked the 8 course taster menu for our evening dinner which was wonderful and very filling. Breakfast next day was very good, we had the traditional English (always a favourite), loved the black pudding.
Will definately stay here again as 1 night was not enough, we would have liked to have explored the grounds and even to hire bikes, something to do on our next visit.

If only the one night here could have been extended for longer. This was not only a beautiful location but the attention to detail and genuine niceness of the staff made it stand out. So many good touches from the decanters in the room, to food served where we chose to sit, from music being left on in room from when we returned from dinner, replenished biscuits and refreshed cups made available with fresh milk instead of the usual horrid plastic pots. Breakfast was excellent especially the black pudding (- haven't tasted better)
So this has become our favourite hotel experience and one which we hope to enjoy again . Thank you

What a fantastic place to stay on a trip to England. Room was large, comfortable beds, bathroom top notch spotless and modern. Breakfast was outstanding. Service was impeccable from the time we pulled up in our car to the time we left. One example - on our way to our room we were asked where we were eating. We mentioned that we were just planning to have a light meal in the bar. When we came down for supper there was a reserved table for us. Food was excellent. Grounds were lovely even though the weather was not. Cookery school is not to be missed.
Only two slight minuses - we were surprised by the carpeting in our room - it was far from the standard of the furnishings - but very clean. Also room was cold for Americans - huge windows and heat limited to certain hours. They very promptly brought up space heaters which helped tremendously.

Room Tip: We stayed in Whitby. It worked well for myself and adult son.

A beautiful place - spectacular setting for a very impressive building. Decor and furnishings appear genuine in period but the bits you touch eg the beds and bathrooms are beautiful and modern. The food is as excellent as you'd expect from an hotel that has a cookery school. However the really distinguishing feature of this place is the incredible friendly, professional and discreet service - from the offer of valet parking (it was raining when I arrived and it's 50 metres to the car park!) through the complementary decanters of whisky and gin in my room and the bed turn-down service that includes turning on soft classical music, to the swift fuss-free response to every request my (already high) expectations were exceeded.
