“Fantastic location and place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014 via mobile

My partner booked us a 2 night stay at swinton park for Christmas with a 2 day cookery course. Unfortunately there was an electricity cut when checking in but the staff were fantastic in dealing with such a difficult issue. The cookery course was brilliant with a mad chef called Steve. I think the most memorable of this stay was the staff, utterly professional and very, very friendly. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a first class hotel.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting with large, clean rooms and highly attentive and friendly staff. Our only disappointment was the menu didn't change in the nights we stayed, which with only 4 dishes to choose from is very limiting. As they make it mandatory to stay for 2 nights with a Saturday stay I would expect a change of menu. The food was also very slow to come out, but the staff were apologetic.

OK, back on the UK roads again, this time for Mrs G's birthday. We booked a night at Swinton Park on recommendation from Mrs G's niece who stayed there in October. Arrived at 2pm to find that the hotel was suffering intermittent power cuts as the power company was trying to restore the system since the recent gales. However, it was daylight so we were able to check into the room. All very good up to this point and the room was high in the building and large and spacious with a cricket theme (which probably explains the green wallpaper). We could only have a sandwich because of the power cuts, and to be honest it wasn't the finest we've eaten, but we'll make allowances because of the situation. The house white wine was delicious, from Galicia in northern Spain and good value at £5 a decent glass.
The lights were due back on at 3pm ish, but didn't come on until 5.30, by which time the place was festooned with candles which created a real winter atmosphere. Out jovial 'wartime spirit' mood was doubtless helped by the free glass of champagne that the general manager forced upon us.
Now for dinner - we chose the seven course tasting menu, and we were not disappointed. The introductory glass of champagne and canapes were perfect which provided an excellent curtain raiser for what was to follow. Lovely table in the window, fine glasses and napery and the service was first class, every dish explained and the accompanying wines provided a real sense of fine dining. Big roaring fire, exquisite food - what's not to like. It's not a cheap night away, but it's ideal for a special occasion. Mrs G gave it a big 'yes' vote, so that's fine by me.

Room Tip: if you book two nights on one of the packaged deals then you might end up with a suite. We had a lar...

This is the fifth time we have stopped here and it wont be our last. This time we stppoed in the Bradford and the room and views were wonderful. As usual the staff and in particular the general manager and receptionist were all very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere and ambience ensure a very relaxing break.

We had a family birthday celebration at the Swinton Park, including four grandchildren in our party. From the moment we arrived the staff were unfailingly helpful - on the first night when we were arriving from different parts of the country at different times, a table was arranged for us in the bar so that we could eat whenever we wanted - important for the smallest grandchildren. That was just one example of the way in which all staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a great weekend. Rooms were excellent and again the staff who dealt with our initial booking helped by suggesting that one family could share a suite with children's beds rolled into the sitting room - it worked perfectly. The food was high quality with great attention to detail and to the needs of the children. It was a one-off birthday occasion and fairly expensive but certainly worth the expense. We look forward to visiting again as a couple - an extremely relaxing place to stay.

Great parkland castle style country house hotel. Views onto the deer park, helpful and friendly staff. Upmarket without being uncomfortable. Great effort around Halloween for the kids. Excellent food.
