We booked a double room for two nights. The hotel was full, with most rooms taken by guests for a wedding on the Saturday. Despite the fact reception should have seen we were staying longer and thus probably not part of the wedding, they put us in a room directly above the reception. My wife was seven months pregnant, we were tired after driving down from Scotland, and wanted to get good night's sleep ready for a family christening the next morning. Fat chance. We ended up wandering round Ripon at midnight, exhausted and thoroughly hacked off, because even that was preferable to being in a room that was effectively a disco.
We complained and were given a 50% discount off our stay. Cutting £135 a night to £68, that just about made the room fairly priced - putting aside the noise issue.
Because in no way is this place worth £135 a night. The corridor was was smelly and musty. The room was tiny, with a unbelievably small 'double' bed that barely fitted two people, no space round it, faded and old-fashioned décor and fittings, and a total lack of anything appealing, stylish or welcoming. The plumbing noises from adjoining rooms were also extremely loud.
Maybe the lack of competition has allowed this place to carry on charging eye-wateringly high prices for a hotel that looks like it hasn't made an effort to improve for 20 years or more. But you get the impression that if someone opened somewhere new and half-decent in Ripon, it'd be curtains for the Ripon Spa Hotel. And chintzy, musty curtains at that.
