We have used the Royal Oak for the last 5 years whilst going racing for the Bell ringer event. It is always busy and you need to book well in advance if wanting a room. The rooms are modern and two of the eight are superiors. Of the ones we have had when staying , the bathrooms are of ample size with a powerful shower over the bath and a shower screen. Tea and coffee facilities with biscuits, water and flat screen T.V.

All rooms have double glazing, which you may need on a Saturday evening if a light sleeper as a night club is just 50 yards up the street and stays open until 3 A.M. Though it was no problem to us and you could always ask for a rear facing room.

Parking is to the rear but is limited to a first come first served basis, parking overnight otherwise can be in the supermarket park which is to the rear. The bar has a good selection of ales and when we have been there, there has always been plenty of pleasant staff behind the bar.

This is the first time we have had an evening meal but have had lunch before, all of us had a meat dish and these were cooked to perfection, an excellent chef!

Breakfasts are all locally sourced produce and there are copious amounts of coffee, tea and juices.

IF PLANNING TO GO MAKE SURE YOU GO ONTO THEIR WEBSITE AND PRE ORDER A FREE DINING CLUB CARD, WHICH GIVES YOU 10% OFF MEALS AND ACCOMMODATION, ALSO OTHER SPECIAL OFFERS.

A great hotel to use as a hub for visiting the cities of Yorkshire , bus station is just down the road and you can buy a hopper ticket cheaply.

Our only regret is that James the manager has now left for pastures new, he was always there to make sure everything was right. We just hope his successor is half as good!!

Thank you for leaving this great review and we hope you had an enjoyable and winning day at the races!

It is great that you had an evening meal with us this time during your stay which you thoroughly enjoyed and these comments have been passed on to our Chef's!

It is unfortunate that James has moved on to pastures new however we are very pleased to welcome Richard our new General Manager who we are sure you will find equally accommodating.

Richard and all the team look forward to seeing you on your next visit to Ripon.

The Royal Oak is right in the centre of Ripon and is somewhere I would highly recommend to anyone staying in the area. The rooms were modern, very clean ans well presented, the staff were all really nice with all our group including our childen, and not in a false 'just humouring them' kind of way. Having had a long day at lightwater valley we decided just to eat in the hotel, this proved a great decision as the food was superb. The waitress who served us was very attentive and pleasant and said if we were going for a walk after our meal we should go up to the square where the 'hornblower' sounds the watch at 9pm everyday. The kids enjoyed his story about the history of the watch in ripon. All round, excellent stay and would recommend to anyone, will definitely be back.

We stayed in the RO for 1 night as we attended a wedding at The Deanery. The room was lovely -very clean and nicely presented- the food was lovely and the staff were really helpful and friendly.

Fantastic location, just by the Minster and the market square I would recommend the hotel.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

We stayed at the Royal Oak while visiting Ripon races. Located just off the Market Place, it is an ideal location to explore Ripon, and only a £5.00 taxi ride to the racecourse. There are only 2 or 3 parking spaces at the rear of the property, so be prepared to pay for parking in a car park. The pub/Hotel itself looks very oldy worldy from the outside but is quite contemporary inside. Our room was up 4 flights of stairs, but worth the climb. It was a very large en-suite room with two large windows overlooking the small street that runs by. It had all the usual (hairdryer/tea/coffee) etc and was extremely comfortable. The bathroom very clean and tidy. There were a few signs of wear and tear (stain on wall where someone presumably threw a teabag at the waste bin and missed!) and wall paper peeling at the top, but these are only minor points and wouldnt stop us booking this hotel again. The staff were very helpful. Check-in at 2pm, but as we had arrived early (11.00am) we were told that housekeeping would do our room first and it would be ready at 12 - which was great! Although I didn't have breakfast, my husband had the full 'Yorkshire' which he said was fabulous! All in all, a great place to stay at a very reasonable price.

Room Tip: Arrive early to try and get a parking space"

This is a great pub. Haven't been in for over 25 years, when it used to be a favourite with the soldiers and fights on a Saturday night. What a change. What an improvement! The food was really delicious. Good friendly service, nice interior, good atmosphere and average price.
Would definately recommend it. It's also very central if you're staying in town.
A really nice experience.

Wow thanks for the great review and 5 stars!

The pub certainly is very different to 25 years ago. We hope it will not be 25 years before we see you again.

Thanks again for taking the time to review us and recommend us.
