“Beautiful & Friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

Me and my wife were staying in Monyash and had decided to go for a walk in Lathkill Dale, intending to walk for an hour and turn back. Because of the great time we were having we forgot ourselves and ended up walking the entire dale. At the end of the dale we were confronted with a steep road that we had to climb to get out into Over Hadden, where we then intended to catch a bus back.

Half way up the climb and admittedly slightly feeling it a bit in the legs we came across a very welcome sight - The Garden Tea Rooms. With a welcoming facade that invites you in we made our way to the tea room where we were met by the owner, a really friendly guy with a big smile. We couldn't resist the array of beautiful home made cakes and due to the climb we ordered three bottles of fizzy water.

We went and sat in the garden and awaited our order. The owner, not only bringing out the mouth watering cakes but two extra ice cold large glass's of cold water and only two bottles of fizzy water. Knowing that we wanted three bottles to quench our thirst he had very kindly given us the two large glass's of water (bottled) free of charge and didn't charge us full price for the remaining two bottles - NOW BEAT THAT FOR SERVICE !

We then sat talking to him about VW Camper Vans and the Peak District for over half an hour and when we inquired about times of buses etc the owner not only gave us directions to the bus stop but disappeared and upon his return had printed off a bus time table from his computer !

I cannot begin to explain the friendliness of this place and the excellent cakes etc that are o offer but I hope you get the picture of how this visit made our day.

If you are anywhere near Over Hadden / Lathkill Dale then treat yourself and visit The Garden Tea Rooms.

“a great discovery!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

We came upon this lovely tea room by chance on the way down the steep road to lovely Lathkill Dale and decided to try it out on the way back up after our walk. It's in a lovely setting, perfectly pitched to reward the climb up the hill with a drink and piece of cake. The cakes were gorgeous - very generous slices and freshly baked that morning. The coffee was excellent too and the overall cost was remarkably good value. Unfortunately we finished off our cake before taking photos so the photos we took don't do it justice!!!..... We will certainly return when next in the area. It's only open as an outside eating space so is presumably weather dependant but this somehow adds to it's charm.

“scrumptious and amazing value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

If you are the sort of person who lives on lentils and leaves and diets like a super-model, look away now. But if you are the healthy, outdoor type who strides down Lathkill Dale and deserves a scrumptious and generous slice of home-made cake and a pot of tea, and who wants to drink it on a terrace overlooking the valley and miles of beautiful countryside, read on.
This is a small family teashop in the idyllic hamlet of Over Haddon. If you are touring the area by car, the hamlet is signed off the B5055 from Bakewell to Monyash. But the best way to find it is on foot, from the footpath along the beautiful Lathkill Dale, which runs from Youlgreave to Monyash. Yes, a bit of a climb up the road, but it's worth it. And you feel very virtuous. Cakes are traditional (carrot, lemon drizzle etc etc), made by the owners, served fresh not defrosted, and come in generous portions. I heard one customer say that it was the best slice of cake he'd had in years. Tea is served in mugs or china tea pots - we had a pot for two. Can't comment on the coffee, but we each had two good-sized really nice cups of tea from our pot, and everyone was offered top-ups. The view is wonderful.
The whole place was spotlessly clean, too. Dogs on leads welcome - literally, as they get water and a complimentary biscuit.
We had parked at Over Haddon to start our walk to Monyash and back from there, and we wound up at the tea room before going back to the car. Parking at Over Haddon, by the way, isn't cheap (£5 for over 4 hours, though two-four hours, £4, will get you a lot of walking and enough time for tea), and there is very little room to park on the road - but if the parking fee goes to support the management of this important wildlife habitat with its industrial traces, you can't complain. We'll be back to walk the Dale again and revisit the cafe.
And the total bill for two large cakes and a big pot of tea for two: £5-60p
