“Very pleasantly surprised!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

Just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel which is right in the centre of Bakewell. Room was clean (and smelled clean) bedding was fresh and decor clean and tidy, floors squeaked but only what you would expect in an old hotel. Staff were helpful and friendly but the gave no information on check-in whatsoever except where our room was. Consequently when we went down to dinner and were presented with a menu/price list we were not aware how our half-board option worked and found out from an overheard conversation that we had an allowance of £25 per person for dinner. You would not have been able to purchase 3 courses for £25. However, the food was outstanding! All freshly prepared with lovely presentation. Best food we've had at a hotel like this in a long time. Breakfast again was excellent.

Worst part was the difficult parking. Although when we arrived back to the hotel after a day out and couldn't find a parking space one of the staff moved his car to let us in.

Very good value. Would definitely stay here again.

Just returned from an overnight stay at this hotel. Nothing special to be fair. We were told our room was across the road to the left after the archway.... That's it. No breakfast times? No information on hotel facilities ,bar area toilets lifts????? On arrival I had requested a cot for our 11 week old daughter- I was using it to stand her pop up bassinet in. We were obviously a couple with a baby. Unless there was another entrance other than the two we saw, access to the main building was up steps! We didn't see a ramp. We couldn't find a lift to access the 2nd floor either. Our room was number 25. So again we had to lift/carry our pram up two flights of stairs. The room was clean fresh bedding/ towels etc. we requested an iron which was brought to our room straight away. Breakfast was ok- plenty to choose from. The best thing about their hotel is the location .

I stayed here with some colleagues for a group meeting and team building activities. The hotel was ideally placed and all the staff very helpful and accommodating for both our meeting, and overnight stay - including opening the bar after we arrived late from our evening meal in town.

The hotel is old - which is why the rooms are a bit creaky, but the location, value, quality of food and service all excellent. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Our team building activity included cycling at nearby Monsal Trail which I would also recommend very highly.

Five of us popped into the Rutland Arms this afternoon for afternoon tea after being disappointed at three other venues which were closed due to weddings. The girl who greeted us was lovely, nothing too much trouble, we were seated and ordered champagne to start off with. Our champagne arrived and very soon after that came cake stands of lovely finger sandwiches, cakes and cream scones- all beautifully fresh. We had a lovely time, good friendly service, what more can you want?
Next time we are in Bakewell we will be back.

A perfect meal on Sunday night with excellent portion size and food quality . The hotel downstairs is traditional with modern mixed and looks great. The Rutland burger was perfect and we will be returning back here very soon.

This hotel seems to be gradually improving. Much of the downstairs has been renovated to modern standards and looks very nice. Our room (6) was in the main building and wasn't brilliant. A small room overlooking a flat roof and the ventilation pipes from the kitchens, along with nesting pigeons. Not a good view.
The room itself had a strange smell when we walked in, we opened a window to air it out a bit which did help. It was a smell of damp linen or carpets but the linen on the bed was fresh and clean and didn't actually smell when I stuck my nose to it. The towels were very old, thin and grey, (should have been white).
The bed was quite hard.
The bathroom was ok, the shower wasn't very powerful and the whole bathroom really needed an update although it looked clean.
The breakfast was nice and fresh and the buffet well stocked.
Overall we think it was overpriced for what we got.
We paid £145 for one night, we would have expected a better room for that and think if we'd paid less than £100 we would have been happier.
Parking is across the road in a very tight car park. We did get a space but some people had had to double park later in the day.

We weren't really sure what to expect, given some recent reviews, but I have to sat it wasn't bad at all. Nice and clean, modern bathroom, quite a large room, decent facilities, right in the centre of Bakewell. Yes, it wasn't ideal having the car parking in the antiques centre car park, but it wasn't that difficult to spot and my eyesight is not great. Very comfy bed, nice mattress and surprisingly quiet.Let down a little bit by having no pastries at breakfast, but a small point. I would recommend it to people staying in Bakewell.
