“Great building from a byegone age converted into a thriving business”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2011

I loved the higgledy piggledy nature of the table layout and the general ambience made us enjoy our food even more. I had the cup of soup and a sandwich and both were excellent.
Can't wait to go again

“Reminded us of a works canteen”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2011

We had not been to the bookshop for some time, so as we were on our way back from Chesterfield decided to drop in and top up on reading material. What a shock! Pay and display car park for a start. Bike hire, and sadly, a much reduced bookshop floor area. Instead a very large catering operation has taken over the bulk of the floor space.
The catering menu was full and varied, from breakfasts to cooked lunches also hot and cold snacks. We had a light snack of a toasted bagel topped with cream cheese and mushrooms, very good indeed, well presented, and, good value for money. However, the environment reminded us of a works canteen, lots of tables tightly packed in, we found it was not a relaxing experience. The staff were very busy and appeared to be rushed off their feet.
We will visit this restaurant again, but next time we will sit outside where it is less crowded.
This is obviously a company cashing in on the newly opened Monsal Trail. Good luck to them. But please, scrap the pay and display car parking; especially the over officious warnings for non compliance.
We get bolted up enough as it is living in the Peak District.

I am writing in the response to your review.

Firstly I must correct you, our customer car park is FREE of charge.

The pay and display car park is not operated by Hassop Station cafe bookshop & cycle hire, this is under private ownwership and has been a pay and display car park for many years.

With the popularity of the newly opened tunnels on the Monsal Trail the car park owner was advised by the Peak Park to create more parking spaces.

We are very proud of our quality food and good service, we are sorry that in your opinon it seems like a works canteen,we have had a lot of positive comments since the refurbishment.

We would like to stress again that our parking for customers is free, thank you.

“Our favourite Derbyshire cafe.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2010

Hassop Station has been a bookshop with ancillary cafe for many years and very dull and drab it was too.
Recent new ownership has really changed things around - it is now a cafe with an ancillary bookshop. What a change - it is clean, light and bright. Self service with a menu on three blackboards offer a wonderful selection of food. We have been three times so far and only eaten light lunches although the hot food looks magnificent.
The toasted bagel was full of cream cheese and delicious smoked salmon, the toasted sandwiches were among the best we have tasted, the sweet potato soup was plentiful, hot and very tasty. The red pepper and feta cheese quiche was served warm with a delicious interesting and tasty salad beautifully presented. On our second visit we were about to try the ice cream when a power cut meant that the cafe had to close. On a third visit we shared a strawberry muffin, the centre was scooped out and filled with strawberry compote - mmmmmmm!
After ordering and paying for your food it is brought to your table by pleasant and well mannered young waitresses. The manager (chef ?) is usually dashing around with a pleasant manner and a sense of humour.
There is an outside patio which over looks the old railway line which is now the Monsal Trail a pretty walk which winds its way from Bakewell and through Monsal Dale and beyond, at the moment the tunnels are closed off and you have to take to the hills but plans are afoot to reopen the tunnels to walkers.
Parking is plentiful and the venue is disabled friendly.

“Lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2010

This cafe/bookshop has recently been refurbished and restored and is in a lovely position next to the Monsal Trail. It's particularly nice to sit on the terrace and watch people walk and cycle up and down the trail on a summer's day. The croissants are lovely and crisp, and very nice fresh fruit salad. My partner rated his egg and sausage cob. The staff seem friendly. Lots of nice little touches like magazines, jugs of water, plastic plates and bowls for toddlers. There is a small play area with toys indoors but there's also a large covered area at the front of the bookshop with picnic tables and toys. Lots of parking.
