“One of the best!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

I have been away several time this year and Sheldon's Retreat has certainly out shone all of them. The hospitality received from both management and staff was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble and they were always there on hand to help. My room was beautifully furnished to a very high standard and I was also able to take my dog who was totally spoiled by everyone!! With lots of local easy walking and breath taking views it was a truly relaxing break, I am sure there will be a return trip in the near future and take advantage of their massage facilities.

The B&B is in a lovely village with an excellent pub. It is/was clearly work in progress in that the property was being done up and was rather like a building site. We stayed for 2 nights with some friends from NZ - our room was fine but theirs had no hot water to have a shower on either night despite this being mentioned. On leaving we asked for a refund of some level for them not being able to shower and were told to write to the owner who lives in London. 2 communications sent and heard nothing back and at £95 per room per night this is not good enough. The photos on the website were definitely misleading for the property at the time we stayed there. Sound proofing in the rooms was very poor and breakfast extremely average........

So sorry, all I can say is that things have greatly improved since then. If you ever were to return (is that likely!!) we would definitely compensate you.

We booked this B&B for two nights at the last minute as we were on a field trip and sadly did not read the reviews. We found out the hard way! Paid £95.00 a night and described as luxury. Anyone who has experienced a luxury B&B will know that this is not one of them. Had to pay in advance otherwise we would have left.

Stairs very steep, electric cables draped across landing, covered with rugs. Doors to all the rooms cheap bare wood, needed to be replaced or at the very least painted. No carpets anywhere all bare floors and ceramic tiles.

We stayed in the Chatsworth Room described as French Romanticism. Very nice shower room en-suite despite shower being rather small, door to bathroom the same as the ones on the landing, tatty. Bedroom quite nice apart from the wardrobe which had slide robe mirror doors, wood needed painting and looked messy (not very French)!! Despite this, room and bathroom were very clean with eco friendly shower products.

The new manager had only been there two weeks, he said he had had to bring his girlfriend in to help out as he was having to run around and do everything. He told us that the chef had left the week before. The manager's girlfriend had to cook us our breakfast. Breakfast laid out as other reviews, not brilliant (not sure that the new Manager really knew what to do). The whole breakfast experience was not very professional and rather disjointed.

Our room was not serviced after the first night. Manager apologised, said he was having to run around on instructions from the owner. Not only did he have the B&B to cover, he was also acting 'farmer' to sheep and chickens in the fields at the back.

New extension breakfast room, very nice table and chairs, although the whole room still needed to be finished. Looked as though the owner had acquired a job lot of assorted pictures to decorate the walls, along with middle eastern ornaments and mirrors. You cannot bring the middle east to the Peak District, somehow doesn't really go in a Derbyshire village!!

I actually felt really sorry for the new Manager, he was a really nice guy. I felt the owner had just dumped him in the 'poop' and expected him to get on with everything without any staff. The owner did not live on site.

The whole experience was certainly not worth the price paid, £65.00/night would have been more realistic.

Our disappointment started when we parked and saw the three breeze-block barns behind the house. We were expecting a lovely garden with views of the Peaks, somewhere to stroll in our "luxury retreat".

The room was OK but had only one chair and felt like a box due to the two small windows. We arrived on a cold day after a long drive and the radiators had not been switched on in our room.No welcoming biscuits or hot chocolate with the tea-making facilities( we paid £95 a night and thought a few pence for biscuits was not asking too much!

The sound-proofing was awful and we could hear next door having a pee and a shower and the Reception telephone conversations boomed through the house!

No Menu or napkins with our place settings and the vegetarian breakfast was the usual fry-up with a couple of veggie sausages. The preserves consisted of a solitary quarter-full jar of supermarket marmalade on the sideboard next to the bottles of red and brown sauces. No freshly brewed coffee or tea here but an urn and tea bags and instant coffee. The rest was supermarket yogurts and plastic-wrapped cheese, the sort you see on cheeseburgers! You had two piles of white and brown sliced bread to put in the toaster.

We were so disappointed we would have left after one night but had pre-paid.The disappointment was made worse by the fact that Ashford in the Water at the bottom of the valley was a very pretty village with two good pubs and probably some decent B&B's.Sheldon is a pleasant working village and we thoroughly recommend the Cock and Pullet pub- great pub grub and real ales.

The therapy rooms at the rear seemed to be a couple of outhouses! There was a small garden at the front of the house but it was next to the sitting out area for the cafe ( the dining room was also a cafe during the day) There wasn't a guests' lounge in this "luxury retreat"!

All in all a very disappointing stay; I have had better breakfasts in Blackpool B&B's. The use of the word "luxury" was inappropriate. If you are in he area, try Ashford in the Water for a stay but the Cock and Pullet pub in Sheldon is well worth a visit.

The sound-proofing was awful; we could hear next door having a pee and shower and could hear the conversation of the room below. Also, every telephone conversation at the Reception boomed throughout the house.

No napkins with our breakfast place settings and no Menu. The vegetarian breakfast turned out to be the usual
