“Fantastic!"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2013

I stayed at this hotel Thurs 19th Dec. My colleague booked it, so I had no idea what to expect. I just assumed it would be like a bed & breakfast.
I was absolutely blown away by this place. It's quintessential old England, but with all the mod cons of any top hotel. Everything from the decor to the toiletries are first class.
It has character and the staff are warm and welcoming; which makes a difference to the corporate 4 star hotel I'd stayed in earlier in the week.
We ate in the restaurant, and again I couldn't find fault. Great wines and a good menu.
If you are bored of the big, nondescript chain hotels but still like a bit of luxury, this place is for you.
I enjoyed my stay that much, I'm just about to book again for Jan.

Dear Karen

Thankyou so much for taking the time to write a review and I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay at The Methuen. Customer service is very important to us and we strive for guests to feel at ease whilst still receiving professional service. We make alot of effort with the planning of the menu and wines etc and it is great to receive such positive feedback. I will pass this onto the staff.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you again in the New Year.

Kind Regards

Debbie Still

We stopped here for a coffee. we had to ask if they were open for drinks. The lady that served us seemed to be far to busy to deal with us. Calling me from the till on the other side of the room to see what we wanted to order! We thaught they would have come to the table to take our order. Both the tea and coffee we're very average.

Spent a very lazy Saturday and Sunday here, dining on Saturday night, Sunday breakfast and Sunday lunch - could have stayed all week. The food is really good - homemade bread, cakes and muesili for breakfast - perfect fried egg & bacon bap. At dinner, loved the prawns on toast, cauliflower soup with shallot bahji in it, boyfriend's pheasant scaloppina was amazing. Bedrooms very luxurious. Will be back soon!

Our small group of five arrived in the late afternoon from Bath - a ten mile trip which, due to traffic on the Saturday took 45 minutes. Our hosts were very welcoming and our rooms were well appointed with duvet covers, freshly ironed linen and a huge bathroom with a rain shower head.
We had dinner in the hotel and everything was delicious. Full breakfast was included and that was well done as well.
It was Remembrance Day and so we had a parade in town!
The only drawback is the long cab ride to the hotel and the fact that it is on a busy road so when we opened our window, we heard the traffic up until about midnight.
We heard that the new owners took over about three years ago and did a total renovation. They did a great job.

Stayed for work recently after a mix up with the original booking elsewhere, and when contacted to see if we they had room, the staff at Methuen couldn't have been more helpful. We already had dinner booked there anyway, so staying there as well saved all the taxi fares. Great food, both for dinner and an excellent "cooked to order" breakfast. Bar was very relaxed and comfortable with the open fire blazing away to take the chill off.

The rooms were a good size, even had a four poster bed with a bath in the corner and a large TV, though didn't use that as chatting to the bar staff/owner was much more interesting!

May well go back with my partner soon, and will certainly recommend to anyone going down there, and will stay again if I can when working that way.

Room Tip: room 3 - four poster, bath in the room, and large shower/toilet in the bathroom

Oct 2013 - stopped on a wet Monday night. Welcoming bar with good beers, Great restaurant and room. Reasonable prices. Right in the middle of this well placed town. Stop here, no need to look elsewhere. Mike
