“Excellent base for Visiting Bath and Somerset”

Priory Steps

Jul 17, 2007

Very pleasant B&B. Lovely views from the bedroom accross the town of Bradford on Avon to the distance. Short walk to the town, station and restuarants. We went to the Thai Barn, fantastic old wonky building and lovely food there as well.

Room and bathroom in Priory steps clean, comfy and spacious. Breakfast plentiful and cooked to order. Being seated with the other guests round one big table gets the day off to a good start, catching up about where you visited the day before over tea and toast.

Although they were full we heard no other guest noise from our bedroom.

Good base for visitng Bath by train, and further afield in Somerset by car.

Would definitely stay here again.

After being warned off some fancy looking places to stay, we ended up at this lovely little bed and breakfast, in part due to reviews on Trip Advisor. We couldn't have done better. We enjoyed 3 days with Carey and Diane, lovely, thoughtful and charming hosts. As a bonus, we liked the other guests as well. Although close to the town center, our room was extremely quiet, due probably to the thick walls. Parking was easy. The walk into town is too. Breakfast was always very pleasant. My wife noticed Diane coming back from the garden with fresh eggs direct from the nest. Typical understatement that no fuss was made about this nice touch. We got great advice on the small back roads to and from Bradford. The train trip into Bath is convenient and offers wonderful views of the river valley not possible when driving. Complaints? The most serious I can think of is that the lighting in the bathroom was not great. But my wife did not complain. The rooms do not have locks, but Carey explains you probably do not have locks on your bedroom doors either. Oh yes, we spend a nice evening in front of the fire enjoying Diane's home cooking. Her pear tart is one of the best I have ever eaten.

We had a room near the top of the house which was very clean and had a great view over the town. The bathroom was large with a good sized bath with lots of hot water. The bed was comfy and the room a good size. The cottages are old and so you should prepare yourself for oddly shaped rooms etc. We paid £82 per room per night

There is a lovely view down on the town from the absolutely immaculate, imaginative garden. Check out the passion flowers that drape themselves up the walls and the teapot tree. The owners are very laid back and easy to talk to.

The 3 course eveing meal we had was very good quality and was £25 each without wine (but you can take your own to dinner). You don't have to have the meal, but if you do, you should contact them in advance with your preferences/allergies etc. You could probably get something cheaper in town if you tried, but the Priory Steps food is better than some restaurants.

Value for money: I would say average to good. The place is much nicer than most B&Bs, but then it is a bit more expensive than most. I would definitely stay here again, though.

My husband and I stayed in this B&B in May 2006 and found it to be simply wonderful. The accomodations are in a series of ancient woolers' cottages that have been connected and thoughtfully restored. The B&B is situated on a hill overlooking the picturesque village of Bradford on Avon just outside Bath. We had a double en-suite room which was comfortable, clean, and had a fantastic view over the village. The bathroom was large and bright with a large bathtub and plenty of hot water. We were given a key so that we could come and go as we pleased. Breakfast in the morning was cooked to order by the gracious hostess and served in a bright, sunny dining room where we were lucky enough to join in wonderful conversation with other guests around a large kitchen table. The pictures on the B&B's webiste are representative of the establishment.

Staying in Bradford on Avon is perfect for seeing Bath. The B&B is in very short walking distance down the hill and across a footbridge from the train station. Taking the train from Bradford to Bath eliminates the nightmare of parking, costs just 4 pounds roundtrip, and is a gorgeous 15 minute train ride from Bath Spa station and all the Bath must-see spots. We would definitely stay here again!
