Went here last night ( Tuesday 9th April).
My girlfriend had been dying to try it ever since it opened and I finally agreed to go try it with her...as she was paying. We first called into divine wines for a nice bottle of red to take with us, and were informed that Karlitos no longer gave "Free Corkage" on their wines.(wonder what happened there?) so please be aware of that when thinking about wine.
So, we arrived and a staff member showed us to a table, I had a brief look around and there were 4 other tables with customers already eating or waiting to order..
The smells coming from the open kitchen were really nice and made us very "hungry to start" so we were looking forward to trying some of the dishes available. The waitress arrived sharply to open our wine and leave menus. After a short time she returned to take our orders..my girlfriend ordered the bruschetta to start and the lasagne for main course, I ordered the cheesey garlic bread with the "meat feast in tagliatelle to follow. Off she went with our order and we sat and had a look around the restaurant and I watched the chefs off and on, as they continued with their work.(well, I was facing them). We did notice that the paint was "peeling away" from the wall at the empty table against the wall opposite us....not good, for a restaurant that has only just recently opened. There are also a lot of canvas prints on the walls which are all out of focus and I found them to be sore on my eyes before I had finished looking at them.
Anyway, after maybe 10 minutes or so the waitress arrived back to us with my girlfriends starter only and told me that she had made a " mix up " with my starter and it had been sent to a different table....and that a "fresh one" was being made and would be with me shortly..I said nothing, but did wonder why they didn't just "keep" my girlfriends starter until mine was ready and bring both together....rather than one of us eating while the other waited..
So, I waited while my girlfriend started to cut into her bruschetta...just as she had cut a piece off it and put the fork onto it to lift it to her mouth she caught sight or a "HAIR" firmly embedded in the edge of the bruschetta and alerted me to this......not good, as I had already remarked to her about the staff member that was going between the open kitchen and the dishes department without appropriate head wear on..and as I was a chef myself for over 30 years I knew this to be against regulations ( a hair in the food just waiting to happen).
After the initial muck up over the starters, finding the hair certainly didn't help..and with us trying this restaurant for the first time...well, what can I say? It wasn't leaving us with the mad urge to be chomping at the bit to get back again. I called the waitress back to our table and discreetly pointed the " offending hair " out to her....I didn't even speak, I just pointed at it. She took the starter away, up to the chef where there was a little pow wow about it and she returned to us, apologised to us both and told us that it would be replaced with a fresh one and both our starters would be "on the house". We said thankyou and it wasn't mentioned again. Luckily for them and us, we both have strong stomachs and didn't let this little adventure with the hair wreck our evening out.
The fresh starters arrived a short time later and after a brief scan looking for the hairs brothers or sisters we ate them. I found my starter to be quite nice and my partner enjoyed hers as well although she did say that if she was to make it at home that she would make it without the "mint". Our empty plates were removed and a few minutes later our main course arrived...these too where quite tasty and we both enjoyed them. After finishing the mains my partner decided she would try the tiramisu and told me it was really nice....my partner then paid the bill £27 excluding £2 corkage fee and we left.
As to returning to Karlitos......yes, we proberly will....but not on a busy night..we score Karlitos 6 out of 10..but without the starter "mix up" and the "hair" they could have scored 9.
