...says the website. Well, it all started pretty well. A group of 13 middle-aged (mostly) and well-behaved blokes, forming a stag party, arrived at around 10pm on Friday 31 May 2013 and we should have been warned by the fact that the place was empty - except for one couple. Initial impressions were good. We were welcomed warmly by the MD, loaned reading glasses for those of us who had left ours at the hotel, and were given a big round table which we could, just about, all squeeze, 'round.
Then, um, it all went badly wrong. The starters (at £7 per head I think) were miniscule, the main courses (which we had to wait forever to arrive), all tasted exactly the same with rubbery, pre-cooked meat. The beer bottles were constantly replenished - we felt the very long wait for the food (given there was no-one else there) was to ensure we drank all the more.
And then the bill came. An absurd £500+. Talk about 'we saw you coming', polite stag party. Some assertive negotiating by one of our number led eventually to a very substantial reduction in the tab - but the taste remains in the mouth that not only was there an outrageous attempt to overcharge, but for a very, very poor offering in terms of the quality of the food.
If that's the Cellar's pudding, it's proof you may want to try elsewhere in Alcester.
