“Must-do Carrick Activity”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

My two year old lives a visit to Carrick Castle. The last time we went was when my parents were over from the States. The history is well-told and interesting and there is an imaginative sense of exploration for young ones. The current excavations also make the castle seem archaeologically relevant. Definitely worth going with kids and then walking along the seafront to the play park and Maud's!

“Fantastic attraction currently let down by little imagination”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2014

Carrickfergus castle is hugely impressive as a historic attraction. The amount of history and relative interest to Co Antrim simply cannot be touched upon on a trip advisor review - however the NI environment agency really should step aside and let a body like the NITB and local council run the show. We were disappointly underwhelmed during our visit. When touring other castles, and historic attractions they are now interactive, with fantastic displays and effort. Carrick lacks this which is a terrible loss to visitors. A few poor dummies and readable display boards are a dated attempt to engage a visitor... Learning from the likes of the Titanic, and Causeway surely some multi lingual Audio shows, walkabout hand held guides, staff who get out from behind the desk and engage with customers would be a great start. Hopefully this can get better as its annoyingly a waste not to promote such a brilliant venue which has been well conserved in N. Ireland..

“Opportunity Lost”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2014

This place is steeped in the history of Ireland / Ulster. One of the most important figures in Protestant culture is King William of Orange or King Billy as he is fondly remembered by the Protestants. He landed here before travelling south to defeat the Catholic King James at the Battle of the Boyne river in 1690 then seized the throne of England. With that sort of historical significance you would think more would be made of it but it is a bit desolate with its unconvincing mannequins dotted around the place and little to tell the visitor of its history. That said, it is worth a visit although it is not terribly disabled friendly.
