We visited the Carrickfergus Castle on 12July as everything in Belfast was shut down for the parades. What a pleasant surprise! The castle was well maintained and the lady who took us on a tour was from Carrickfergus and provided us with a great history not only of the castle, but the surrounding area as well. Without this information we might have missed the fact that the castle sits on a fresh water well which proved useful during the many sieges the castle endured. There is a bit of climbing involved, but it is a great way to spend an afternoon.
