Went for a week day lunch for 2. In centre of town and set in a vaulted basement. Very atmospheric, cosy and well decorated with covers for about 50 in 2 rooms. There is a small ante room with bar and a few seats. Good welcome from a delightful and very professional lady who settled us in bar with menus and called us into restaurant when food ready. Set lunch menu of 3/4 choices for starter and mains at £9.95pp. In reply to question of was everything made in-house was a yes, even stocks and "no Knorr cubes!". Food is relatively straightforward and cooked to order in a kitchen that is almost in one of the rooms. Starter of French onion and bacon tart plus salad was a good portion, light and tasty and not so filling as to detract from main; also a salmon and prawn risotto using small frozen prawns but tasty enough! Mains were a perfectly grilled loin of cod with lemon/butter dressing, and a cassoulet of coq au vin. Mains both accompanied by boiled potatoes, romanov cauli, broccolli, and mash of swede/carrot spiced with mace. All excellent and just right portions. Only personal and minor criticism would be that veg could have been a bit more adventurous in style and presentation rather than boiled veg. Wine by glass comes in 175 and 250 (no small at 125) at around £4.10. Waitress was happy to give her advice. Finished with an espresso and mints. Service left to discretion of customer shows confidence and to be applauded. Would certainly return on future visit to Skipton.
