“American Diner In The Dales”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

We took our grandson here on the 5th of October. It was very busy inside so couldn’t get a table without a long wait. It was warm enough to sit outside though and there was plenty of tables including some swing type ones which looked really good fun. The diner seating area is a bit small though and in inclement weather it could be a problem although there are other tables in a barn. The food and service was great. Plastic plates and cutlery as we were outside but the food was good and hearty and the chips were really fresh. There is a great selection of ice creams and American chocolates and coffees. The play equipment for the children is all wooden and very robust and there is a good choice for all ages. We were impressed and would go again.

Hi Petermac68!

Thanks very much for your review - it's great to hear that you enjoyed the food and play areas, and that you'd like to visit us again! We thought you also might like to know that we're in the process of planning an extension to the diner so that there'll be lots more seating inside - we began the (lengthy!) process to gain planning consent almost a year ago, but are making progress now and are hopeful that we may be able to start building later this year. The new bigger diner will have much more seating and space to help with queues and rainy days.

Thanks again, and we look forward to welcoming you soon!

“Great facilities, good ice cream, OK food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

My kis love coming here as the play facilities are so good. You really cannot argue with the free playground and £1 charge for the play barns, with a range of activities which keep toddlers to teenagers amused.

Yes, to keep the free/low cost elements, the owners have chosen to enforce some rules. It's fair enough, they're a business not a community playground.

I have always found the service cheerful (if sometimes harassed) and they are very helpful in putting your name down for tables and trying to fit you in at the desired time.

The ice cream is great - wide choice of flavours, cones, toppings, sundaes and milkshakes. The savoury food is only so-so - I wouldn't make the trip just for the food, but when you're going for so many other things, it's absolutely fine and reasonably priced.

We really enjoy it and will keep coming!

Hi sarahburton30260,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review about us. Its terrific to hear how much your kids love coming here, and thank you for understanding about the rules we have to enable us to keep offering all the facilities that we do.

We're also pleased to hear you enjoy the ice-cream but are truly gutted that you've only found the food to be ok - our aim is to serve you brilliant food which is delicious, simple and authentic and it troubles us that you didn't experience this. I can see you are a regular contributor to tripadvisor who enjoys visiting restaurants and writes honest, reasonable reviews, and we'd like to ask if you'd be so kind as to contact our Parlour Manager at parlour@yorkshiredalesicecream.co.uk so that we can discuss this in more detail with you - we'd love to know where we weren't up to scratch and how we can improve, so that next time you visit you leave saying 'wow'!

We hope to hear from you soon.

“Breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

We ate breakfast here today with 4 friends as a group of 6 adults. It was the first time we had eaten here however our friends had been before and recommended it. Not sure if we booked or not as we arrived late - our friends may have booked - it was very busy but i dont think they waited for a table. Really enjoyed the food, especially the pancakes and maple syrup and we are still full up as I write this review. Loved the location, beautiful scenery and the themed decor, especially the airstream caravan tea and coffee area and the service was quick and efficient. The only downside for us was that it was very noisy with families however many of he children were outside as it was a nice day - would say it is more for families than couples at that time of the day but cant comment on what it is like in the evenings as we have never been. Would visit again but if I'm honest it wouldn't be my first choice - it was something different but not as relaxing for a lazy Sunday brunch as it could have been.

Hi Gillian C,

Thanks very much for your review. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed your pancakes, the service, location and decor. We also take on board your comments about it not being as relaxing an experience as it could have been - we have to admit it can be a bit crazy at times, and we began the (long!) process of attempting to gain consent to extend the diner to alleviate this almost a year ago. We are hopeful that work will begin later this year, and our aim is to add more tables to ease congestion and queuing times, to create a feeling of more space by spreading the seating area out, the entrance will be more spacious and tables will be further away from it, and noise will be dissipated by the extra space. As such, we really hope you’ll come visit us again once the new extension is opened, and we’ll keep working on our plans to ensure that dining with us is an enjoyable experience for all.

“Very difficult to review as don't feel it works well as a restaurant (which is what it claims to primarily be) because the eatin”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

Find this place very confusing. The kids adore it and want nothing more than a few hours playing there with a break for a drink and the delicious ice creams. However, the service we then receive is not great as they are so busy trying to dissuade people who, wrongly, think they should be able to come and use all the equipment while not buying anything at all. They are right that they are not providing a free community park!!! However, having spent my money on coffees and ice creams, I do expect to be able to ask for a glass of water to go with them without being told that I have to pay 2 pounds for a bottle as they don't offer water due to the numbers of people coming and doing nothing but demanding free water all day. It is hard for them but I do feel they need to work out if they want us coffee and ice cream buyers or not. The manager I spoke to today was defensive and combative and made me feel like my views and feelings were unwelcome. If they want us to continue going they really need to sort out what market they are trying to attract and work harder to keep us happy.

Hi Ruthmw1,

Thanks for your review and for raising your concerns – we are always honest in responding to feedback, whether negative or positive, so when I say that we're really pleased that your children love coming here, we really mean it - its terrific, we’re so glad they enjoy their time here.

Your views and feelings are very welcome, but we do feel that we are clear about what we are and who we want our customers to be, and I assure you that visitors like yourselves who are popping up for an ice-cream, drink and play are as much the lifeblood of our business as customers who come here for a meal without visiting the play areas – our aim is to appeal to both, to be fair and consistent in our policies, and not alienate anyone wanting to come here.

For example, keeping regular visitors like yourselves happy is just one reason why we decided that we would not charge an entry or parking fee – it would put off so many of our visitors who pop up for a short play or who come just to eat in the diner. It’s also not what we’re about – we are here to be an ice-cream parlour and diner, and make our living from serving great quality food and drink. As such, we decided that best way for us to operate is to simply ask that all refreshment needed while here is bought from us.

We do try to align our policies with the rest of the cafe / restaurant industry and as such when eating we know that people expect to be able to have a glass of tap water, and we happily provide this (though of course if we’re honest we prefer to sell drinks!). However, where we have chosen to set the boundary is customers who are not dining with us – as you say some people do want to stay a long time sustained on tap water, but not only that - it is also the fairest way to ask all our customers to contribute towards the great quality play facilities here. Charging in this way also means it’s possible to come here for drinks and ice-creams and a play for a few hours for as little as £12 (three drinks and ice-creams), which we feel is great value for money and works out cheaper than the entry alone to many play areas.

I hope that you can accept our response, or perhaps we can agree to disagree – either way we hope that you continue to come here and to be a coffee and ice cream visitor, because we really and absolutely do want you here.

“Very happy customers!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

Myself and my other half were visiting Yorkshire for a few days, we were travelling through to Skipton and saw a sign for this on the way and decided to pop in on the way back. We were completely blown away when we got there - what looks like a brilliant kids park (no children ourselves) but it look great!

We were intending to only buy an icecream, but once we saw the American style we had to try, I had the pulled pork burger and my other half had the plain burger - which looked immense. No long wait, lovely food and reasonably priced - chips were also delicious! :)

We then had our ice cream after which again was reasonably priced for what we had and was yummy! We'd been after some ice cream all afternoon so it hit the spot.

If we come this end again, we will visit again and will be telling our friends and family, so thank you :)
