“Great decor, lovely food, excellent bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

We ate in the restaurant as we didn't know Skipton at all and were just staying the one night.

My starter was spicy fillet of beef - really nice, with VERY HOT horseradish accompaniment. My wife had the prawn and crayfish salad. Both excellent. I had a reasonably priced bottle of Malbec, and pan fried sea bass fillet for main, beautifully cooked. My wife had goat's cheese tart - not as imprssive, probably neede dlonger in the oven. We both went for trio of crème brulée. Divine, absolutely gorgeous.

Staff were fine and the décor is lovely, high ceilings and nice wallpaper and antique mirrors.

Unfortunately we live 30 miles away, otherwise this would become a regular event

“Shame”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012 via mobile

So wanted to like this but sadly let down by lack of staff. Complaints about not being served for a nearby table, and another one that had their coffee spilled. I got a lamb steak not a leg, andnitbwentbcold very quickly. Waitress was good but couldn't cover all the bases. I went to pay at tune bar and batman nearly charged me £8 for a £15 meal. I told waitress she should serve the irritated couple befor they walk, and I paid for the meal at the receptionists . Seems badly run. The place itself is lovely!

“Good value, but why not forewarn of menu changes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We were tempted in by the "2 eat for £25 including a bottle of wine" sign outside. It is pleasant inside and the menus looked interesting, so we ordered drinks and selected from the menu. The waiter asked if we wanted white or rose wine. Apparently there was no red house wine left! Then they came back to say one of the starters was not available. Then the leg of lamb that 2 of us had ordered was not available and would be replaced by chump (a cheaper cut), while the other two were informed that the pheasant would in fact be guinea fowl. We re-ordered everything. We ordered desserts without problems apart from the local cheeses with parmisan biscuits were lacking parmisan biscuits (none left).
Overall we had a very good meal for the value but why-o-why can't they tell us the state of play before we order? Also we did get a red wine at the table, from a more senior waiter. And fair play to the restaurent, they voluntarily knocked 20% off the bill.

“Rhubarb at Herriots Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Excellent breakfast for residents. Evening meals offered a good choice and the food was well cooked and presented. However, on our visit, some of the courses offered were not available.

“Restaurant open but no staff on hand to help.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

My wife and I popped in here having seen the A board outside advising of a Sunday roast. There was no staff around in the restaurant, no diners too which was off putting.
We asked a woman behind the bar "Do you do a veggie roast?" She spoke with an eastern europeon accent and it was clear she hadn't a clue.
However we were told to wait while she finished serving to get someone else who might know.
So we waited and we waited. In the end we walked out!
We did however find a restaurant in Skipton willing to help.
Bad service, no staff not even a menu to read while we waited.
