“15 Times To The Maldives, Best Resort Yet.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

My wife and I have visited the Maldives15 times,we have used 6 different resorts and can honestly say that Vilamendhoo is the best so far. We travelled with Thomsons and found the booking process and pre-flight customer service easy to access and simple to understand. However though our (paid for) requests for extra legroom and seats together on the outward journey were met, the bottle of champagne, pre-ordered, wasn't delivered. It had to be requested from a steward who made it quite clear he was very busy on other duties. When it eventually arrived the bottle was luke warm and the two plastic tumblers that came with it were more suited to lemonade. This didn't quite meet Thomson's boast 'Get your holiday off to a flying start, have a chilled bottle of bubbly brought out to you.' Sorry Thomsons, your cabin service still has a tinge Hi-De-Hi despite your magificent Boeing Dreamliner.
The plane touched down on time, there was the usual scrum at passport checking and a two hour wait at the seaplane terminal though this was made more bearable with access to an air conditioned lounge and complimentary beverages. We eventually took off at 1-00pm arriving at the island some 25 minutes later.
Reception was dissapointing. We were greeted by a staff member who seemed more intent on exchanging hugs with what we took to be several repeater guests, the remainder of the party were directed to a bar where cold towels and a cool drink were supplied. Our greeter and the repeat guests could be seen chatting in the reception area whilst we were left for 10 minutes until other staff came along with room keys and welcome letters. On past visits to resorts it has been usual for the manager and his staff to greet guests, this not very welcome greeting wasn't what we expected. We had to find our own way to the restuarant where lunch was almost over then to our over-water bungalow.
But from then on our holiday couldn't have been better. Our accommodation came with all the comforts of modern living: efficient air con, ceiling fan, mini-bar, coffee machine, flat screen telly, I-Pod dock and access to wi-fi. The rooms are well appointed with plenty of cupboard space, a huge comfy bed, dressing table and a bathroom to die for. We didn't think we'd use the jacuzzi... but we did...a lot. It was so relaxing.
I concur with other contributors about the excellent quality of service in the restuarants and bars, the staff couldn't do enough for us. The variety of food and drink available would suit the fussiest of guests and the service on offer made each visit a pleasure.
I used the dive centre and was impressed with the attention to detail and the enthusiasm of the dive guides. The crew on the dive boats always helped me on and off with my gear and supplied a welcome cup of tea after each dive. My wife enjoyed several treatments at the Spa which was situated just across from our bungalow.
Lighting is a feature in all the public areas, dramatic hanging shades with matching wall lights and unique portable egg shape floor lights which though I've tried hard, I can't find on sale in the UK.
We took lots of photos: sunsets over the swimming pool, sharks herding the small fish, herons feeding on the shoreline, fruit bats swooping at dusk, palm trees framing white sand and will look at these and recall what a brilliant holiday we had.

This was without a doubt the best resort we have visited and despite the dissapointment of the initial greeting we will return.

Room Tip: over-water bingalows have every amenity you will need...and more.

We had a short stay in Vilamendhoo last month and the trip was really awesome and memorable!

The seaplane transferred was good and smoothly except it's too hot and made me dizzy due to no air-conditional.

When arriving the resort, we were truly impressed with a beautiful view and smiling face from a group of staff. Generally, the resort was very clean and managed by a group of well train staff and the service rendered was good without any shortfall. Besides, one of the water short center staff who is also a tour leader of snorkeling excursion really helpful and knowledgeable which unfortunate I've forgotten his name.

The house reef was brilliant! We spent 3-4 hours daily for snorkeling and we have seen variety of corals and fish. We had seen turtle, shark and stingray with many types of fish which the fantastic! The snorkeling point from room 194 to the end was great especially in the morning. In additional, a school of reef shark was easily seen in the north side of the island.

The room was good and we love the concept of the semi-covered bathroom which is very special. The room cleaning will be provided twice a day and our room boy " Saeed" is very friendly.

I would highly recommend this resort to anyone without any doubt!

Travelled in November by Dreamliner but only just got unchilled enough to gird up my loins and comment!
Great flight, much less tiring, more like sitting on an Intercity 125 than a plane with a steady ride and as quiet as a train!!
We were in Beach Jacuzzi villa 220 which was fantastic tbh! Nice and close to the bar and restaurant also the closest to the sea with an uninterrupted view. They also give you designated loungers which can be right by the waters edge. Beautiful! There was AI beer etc in the fridge but we rarely used that as so close to the Sunset Bar. (Big thumbs up to Robin and his staff, what a helpful guy and always seemed happy to see us. If it is an act then he deserves an Oscar!! )

Food was great (we aren't fussy). best sprouts ever!! (honest!)But good choice and great service there too.
Snorkelling as good as we have seen off the island. Nothing spectacular off the reef but sheer numbers of fish, huge shoals of small fish. Esp lovely if you get the tide/current right, you can just float gently along the reef without doing a thing! Great whale shark trips too, though first was so rough that we sailed out two hours and sailed back without getting wet! (got a one person freebie on next trip). But we saw whalesharks on the next trip and on the all day schooner trip (well nice day!) good manta interaction too. + turtle trips tho current on the turtle reef was a ripper!!
Special mention for Lou, the Thomson rep. Never had a 'live' rep on island in the Maldives before but she is definitely in the 'don't panic' school of reps who just sort things rather than agonising about things. Good luck to her and shame on Thomsons for pulling out of the Maldives. They don't deserve employees like her tbh!!

Anyway if you can find Vilamendhoo on offer then take it!! iced coffees by the beach. Sunset cocktails watching the sunset from the Asian Wok. Cold beer in a cold glass in the Boashi swimming pool bar pre dinner! all served with a smile.

Well done Vilamendhoo! Loved it!!

Room Tip: 220 if you are at the adult end, close to beach bar and restaurant but still quiet. whole island is...

We booked this back in 2012 and paid for a beach villa as no water villa available. There was a slight delay in waiting for the seaplane transfer from Male, but plenty of refreshments available. The tour operator advised that you should pack a change of clothes for your hand luggage in case of delayed luggage, however this was not an issue. The seaplane transfer was approx. 25mins and gave spectacular views over this little piece of paradise.
On arrival to the resort we were welcomed with cold towels and a welcome drink. Check in was swift and we were escorted to our room.
Beach Villa - was detached and immaculate. Beautiful location and beach to die for !
Room Boy - Fazel was a babe and nothing was too much trouble for him. The other room boys we met were so polite and again went out of their way to help. During our stay we never felt good service depended on what we tipped.
Dive School - we tried our hand at the introduction to diving (certificated ) be mindful it is not valid elsewhere, still worth it for the experience though. Not any cheaper to take own snorkel equipment as hiring was cheap enough. Dive school staff were lovely, especially Michelle who inspired confidence especially if your nervous !!.
Beach Bars - our favourite was the Bonthi as the staff were crazy and service was second to none....being polite and learning names went a long way ! Drinks were plenty mainly because my motto was if its empty ...fill it up ! Bar manager Robin and his team were amazing, my husband dressed as one of the waiters on our last night and even received a tip from the Food and Beverage manager !!.
Sunset Bar - again was beautiful but there was far more interaction with the staff at the Bonthi Bar.
Entertainment Team - bit limited but still good fun, most of them are tone deaf but that adds to the Karaoke Charm - Crazy Guys !
Asian Wok - absolutely stunning and the food worth every penny and value for money. If you are all inclusive then you can still order drinks both day /night and enjoy sitting on the decking.
We checked out the Water Villas while we were there but to be honest did not feel it was worth an extra 1k for a week to upgrade - again at the end of the pier there are a couple of loungers you can lay on to take in the view but it is a 2 min walk to the bar.
We booked the Sunset BBQ at around £45 each but the food was lovely and worth it.
After the first week we did get a little bored of eating as food was plentiful and fresh.
As we were on honeymoon we booked Crystal Memories photographer through the hotel to take some photos. This was approx. $390 payable at the hotel, for this we got 40 photos in an album and the rest (450) in total on a DVD to keep, WELL WORTH IT !! Our photos were amazing and we had such good fun, I would do it in the second week though when you have some colour.
The only disappointment was we encountered was having two single beds pushed together but nonetheless we made the most of it.
We would definitely return and could not find anything to complain about. This was my 4th visit to the Maldives but my Husbands 1st.
Villamendhoo is definitely worth going to, you will not be disappointed.

Dear joanne g,

Sunny greetings from your honeymoon destination in the Indian Ocean!
I am truly flattered to learn that you have thoroughly enjoyed your honeymoon with us.
I am sorry to hear about twin beds in your room. Normally in such cases if you could let us know while you’re in house, we would be able to move your room to a double room.
I am glad to read that your first step in diving was a successful experience and it is indeed a great opportunity for our guest to take advantage of introductory dive organized by our dive team. Thank you for appreciating our qualified dive team who is very efficient and fun.
Thank you for your positive comment about your experience in our bars and Asian Wok, most importantly the friendly service team.
I am glad to find out that you enjoyed the professional service provided by our Photographers and so please to hear that it was well worth.
Joanne, Thank you very much for staying with us and hope to welcome you back soon in a near future to our little paradise.

We stayed in the adults section of the resort and had all our meals and bar use in that area.
The island is beautiful and as we arrived by sea plane , landing adjacent to a floating jetty 150 yards off-shore, the sight was memorable.

ROOMS: We had a Jacuzzi room and hot tub and adjacent outdoor shower were lovely .

STAFF: Without exception they were a delight and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

FOOD: Our meals were all buffet style (we were on all- inclusive) but plenty of choices.

BARS: To drinks available and served with a smile-ALWAYS.

RESORT: A "no-shoes" resort where all public areas, restaurant, bar etc. had sand floors. It was a novel and lovely change.

BEACH: We had allocated and numbered sun loungers on the very generous beach. No need to be listening to everyone's conversation or breath second hand cigarette smoke.

WASIT ENJOYABLE? ABSOLUTELY.

We have spent a week at the Vilamendhoo Island Resort Hotel and it was the best week of my LIFE so far. When arriving I was absolutely astonished by the view as well as with the service. Our luggage was taken to the Villa without any further need for us to think about it. The view from the Villa is amazing and well as descriptions for the Maldives the sand is nearly white and the water so clear that one can see the ground.
The trip turned out to be absolutely marvelous. The people were all very friendly and the service excellent. The evening program was always inventive and I had a lot of fun.
And when you are there be sure to check out the diving sights of the Maldives. They are beautiful. The diving teachers are super friendly as well and fun to talk to.
So all in all there is absolutely nothing to be changed and everything to be enjoyed.

Just returned from paradise. We stayed in villa 180 on the beach and was detached, rather than semi-detached which was great. The room was lovely, brightly decorated, clean and had everything you need. It was a little strange having a semi-covered bathroom at first but proved to be a good idea!!
Not all of the sockets worked in the room but there's plenty of them. 2 pin and 3 pin so no adapter required.
We were grateful for the aircon even though it had a mind of its own and did what it wanted. Our room attendant Khaleel was lovely despite his lack of English and he tried really hard to communicate with us.
Having a beach villa meant we had shade if we needed it (and we did) as there are palm trees everywhere, direct access to the ocean but could sunbathe outside the villa too (you have to chase the sun between the trees but that's fine) or the option to go and sit by one of the pools. The Boathi pool is a sun trap with no wind. The infinity pool at the end of the island does have the breeze from the sea. The benefit of sitting by the pool is having a bar attendant on hand, whereas outside the villa you have to use your mini bar.
There is a safe in the room at no charge but isn't really necessary as we left iPads, cameras, phones etc out all the time. There's only the room attendant that goes in and everything is perfectly safe. We even left items on sun loungers whilst swimming etc with no problems.
The snorkelling is AMAZING!! The reef was beautiful, I've never seen so many varieties of fish anywhere. There are black tip reef sharks that swim right up to the edge of the sea but are more frightened of us than we are of them. Sting rays come into the edge too, beware of where you stand. As an all inclusive plus guest you get free use of kayaks each day along with other activities, great for a trip round the perimeter of the island. I would strongly recommend doing the free try dive at the dive centre. I was petrified of the sea until recently, I want to do my PADI course now, which you can do in the island.
There's a few trips and we went on the Sunset Cruise (free) and the Turtle & Manta experience. It was good but we saw more on our own reef than on the trip.
The staff are great, very attentive and they remember your room numbers, names etc. Nawal was our restaurant attendant and was delightful.
There's a no cash policy on site which means you charge everything to your room and pay at the end. We didn't like the idea of this at first, however it was a good idea in fact as you didn't need to carry anything with you at any time. Just keep a check on it, reception can give you a balance at any time.
I'm a very strict vegetarian and struggle with food wherever I go so I was very bored of salad and vegetables after 2 weeks. The chef would have done anything for me but I was happy just to eat from the buffet. The buffet was good quality and plentiful, although I was glad I didn't have children with me as they didn't seem to be catered for.
I would say that this is more a couples island rather than for families as there's no children's entertainment and not much for adults either. We ended up playing cards every night in the bar which is usual for us whilst on holiday.
There's not many places I would say I'd go back to as there's so much of the world to see. Maldives is one of those places though. It's total paradise. I miss it already!!!

Dear RJCSJC1972,

Sunny greetings from Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa!

Thank you very much for taking time giving us a great review of your holiday with us.
We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay and the details you have provided for other reviewers would definitely help them. We have checked and fixed the socket that was not working in the room that you have stayed.

Snorkeling around the island and kayaking are some of the activities that our guests really enjoy and glad that you enjoyed it.

I am delighted to learn that you enjoyed varieties of vegetarian dishes on the buffet. I would also like to highlight that we actually have many families who stay with us and in terms of food or other requirements; Guest Services or Front Desk will be taking care of all the special requests including any special food requires for the families.

We are working on improving the night entertainment on top of live band, disco night, Maldivian cultural show etc depending on the demand of our guests and we have taken your comments to improve.

RJCSJC1972, please contact me if there is anything I can do to help to plan a future visit.
