“A very pleasant experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Have just returned from a very relaxing two weeks at Vilamendhoo Island.

The staff are exemplary in all respects, most probably the best my wife and I have experienced on our travels, our jacuzzi beach villa was looked after and cleaned to the highest standards by Shazzi for whom nothing was too much trouble. All of the island is kept to a very high standard indeed!

Food was very good when you consider the logistics involved in supplying such a small island.

My wife and I are both in our seventies and were a little concerned as to how we would fit in, our fears were not realised and I would recommend this resort to all, irrespective of age.

It goes without saying that the beaches are out if this world, the sea life extraordinary and everything about our experiences encourage us to return in the future.

Once again I must commend all of the staff for their attentiveness, politeness and cheerful manner, quite a revelation in this day and age.. Go for the experience of a lifetime!

Room Tip: Beach jacussi villas around 200 to 210 are in an excellent area.

I have been in Maldives 3 times but first time at Vilamendhoo. This place is absolutely recommendable.
1- Nice and very helpful staff
2-Nice beach villa ( what I have booked). Well decorated, clean, enough free minibar ( all inclusive plus ). nice open shower. just remind you to have your tooth brush set with yourself as its not available at your room.
3- The free restaurant is good. Good food package, for me as a vegetarian, it was a good range of choices. For vegans, there is also little choices to help you sleep satisfied ;) . Try to take a table outside and enjoy the nice view. just ask the staff to make the table ready for you there.
4- I'm not a fan of swimming pools as long as swimming in the ocean close by beautiful fish, sharks and turtles is possible but try the sunset pool. It worth it. you ladies, can take so many modeling photos there as my wife did ;).
5- Coral reef is what you will miss just a day after departure! You will experience swimming with beautiful fishes, black tip reef shark and stingrays everyday. If you are lucky you may have a chance to see turtles and eagle rays as well. What I really appreciate is that the hotel has made some passageway from beach to deep water that keeps the coral reef safe. It means you can reach deep waters thought the gateways without killing corals.
6- Having a waterproof camera is a must for capturing nice moment from underwater creatures. I would recommend GOPRO camera that works perfect.
7- Morning Yoga was amazing , just don't forget to register for it.
8-Staff in whale shark excursion such as Najib, Hassan and Fahud are perfect. try to make your reservation with them, then you increase the chance of swimming with whale sharks for sure. We met 7 whale sharks in just one trip.
9- If you are interested to know more about wild creature around the island, protection regulations and what the island is doing to keep the nice coral reef alive, contact Marjan in the guest service. She provides added value to the hotel by taking care of guest about the environments.
10- have before/after bite lotion with yourself to be on safe side. Mosquitoes bother you when you are enjoying your nights in the bar.
11-The only thing that bothered me was CRAP RACING entertainment in the bar. Very disturbing program. No doubt that craps have the same idea. Vilamendhoo, animals are not for our entertainment ! leave the alone...

At the end, I would like to remind you NOT to touch Turtles, whaleshark, fishes and corals reefs. It would be enjoyable for us but not for them. Don't stay on corals. It will make permanent damage of this endangered species, better not to swim over them and just past the beach to deep water through the prepared gateways.

I will definitely repeat my trip at Vilamendhoo in soonest convenience time.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side are quieter

We came to this place with rather high expectations, having read the glowing reviews by people who had previously visited the resort. However, by the time we left, it did not feel much like the once-in-a-lifetime experience that most people would expect of the Maldives.

To begin with the positives, the coral reefs on this island are fantastic. We went swimming and kayaking, and saw many types of marine life, and we were thoroughly fascinated. Those hours we spent each day observing the different marine life-forms, from corals to fishes to crabs and even birds, they were fascinating and educational at the same time.

Another positive has to be the food. We were on the all-inclusive package, and had meals, drinks and some activities covered. Considering we were a "captive audience", we had expected the meals to be rather basic, and ended up being very pleasantly surprised. There was a good selection of food at every meal, and they made the effort to vary the menu daily. The also assigned waiters to guests, so we had the same person waiting on us at every meal. Our waiter, Thauheed, made an effort to remember our preferences, whether it was the kind of drinks we liked to have, or our preferred seats in the restaurant. He was a great guy!

The rest of the experience, however, generally failed to impress. We stayed in the over-water villa with jacuzzi. It was rather run-of-the-mill, with few "wow" factors. It definitely felt very much like an entry-level "luxury" resort. Some of the things in the room were also already showing signs of wear-and-tear and even disrepair.

From the beginning, things did not go very well. After we had arrived at the resort, we were ushered to the lobby, where we were told to wait for somebody to come and attend to us. That "somebody" finally came after a whole hour, only to tell us that our room was not ready, breakfast would be ending in 20 minutes, and we had to entertain ourselves for 3 hours before coming back to collect the keys to our room.

Service levels were also rather basic. There were no "surprises", and generally the staff just performed to meet expectations, and nobody seemed interested to go the extra mile, or even the extra inch. Staff simply responded to requests and seldom offered anything more. Folks were also apparently not very generous with smiles, and a few times we even had to take the initiative to greet the staff first before they would acknowledge our presence. Service at the spa was atrocious. We were totally made to feel unwelcome...

We also felt that the meal timings were also rather restrictive. Generally each meal was served at the restaurant for 1.5 - 2 hours, and they were very rigid with the timings, making absolutely no exceptions. This is where we thought they might want to change, as guests came from many different countries, and presented ourselves with varying degrees of jetlag. A little more flexibility in the meal timings would have been very much appreciated.

The incident that made us decide we will probably not return was the check out. Checkout timings are dictated by the resort. They send a note to the room the night before to tell you what time you should vacate the room and make way for the next guest, as well as which seaplane flight they had booked you on. We were told to empty the room by 9.30am to catch the 10.30am seaplane flight to Male, for our 2.30pm flight out of Male. At 10.30, while everyone was gathered for the flight, they suddenly realised that there were more people than seats on that flight, and four of us were picked at random to wait for the next flight, for which the time could not be confirmed immediately. So we were left stranded at the lobby and waiting for information, and hoping we would not end up missing our onward flight from Male. We made it in the end, but it was rather close, and it was frustration and anxiety that we thought was totally avoidable if they had been just that little better-organised.

In all, this place was good for its natural offerings. The natural beauty on the island and its surrounding water was breath-taking. However my guess is that many people who come to Maldives are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience and memories, and for people who belong in this category, you might have to look elsewhere for the "magic".

Stayed in villamendhoo for my 40th birthday august 2013 best holiday ever! credit goes to staff at villa who always make sure that your needs are attended to, resort well kept and clean rooms beautifull and spacious stayed in adult only zone on a jacuzzi water villa highly recomended, quiet and private, nice to roll from your bed straight to the ocean. food really good lots of variety ate at the asian wok one nite again superb service and tasty dishes.

We went snorkelling almost everyday great house reef around plenty of fish, reef sharks and sting rays, did manta ray excursion saw mantas and green turtle we were lucky enough to spot dolphins no whale sharks though. Danghetti island was nice to see just to experience a little bit of local culture.

Will definately recommend this resort if anyone thinking of visiting maldives, all inclusive is the best in my opinion even to non alcohol drinkers as the water and juices can be a little on overpriced side.

Room Tip: I dont think there's any bad room on JWV we were on sunset side which was just perfect for us.

Stayed at Vilamendhoo for our first baby moon in August 2013, and absolutely LOVED IT!! had a beach villa, with our private little beach, lots of sunshine, and a great service.
this hotel is very well placed, jsut 25 min from Male airport via seaplane- i was 28 wks pregnant, and all went really well. I highly recommend this hotel, especially for pregnant ladies- food of excellent quality, very clean hotel, not overcrowded in our holiday time, lots of activities to do, even if you cant dive, etc. we did lots of snorkeling on this wonderful reef- saw a few sharks, lots of fish, etc. i absolutely abused their spa- to compensate for other activities i couldn't do. Spa is amazing, great product, massages, and really 5* treatment.
they accept children, but have a separate children/family part of the island- which we really appreciated for both couple romance now, and for future holidays with our little one :) fantastic hotel for families i guess too- we met a couple during our stay, and they did diving every day- with option to have your children left in the hotel's playground/and/or nany at the bungalow.
overall: great Value for money, fantastic island and reef, great food, cleaningness, SPA, and staff very friendly and professional.
we highly recommend, and will be aiming to get back soon!!

Couldn't fault the Thompson premium economy flight to Male. Tasty hot food and regular all included drinks. Male is an easy airport to navigate, transferred to seaplane lounge, very comfortable. Yes there was a wait for the seaplane, but that's to be expected. 60 guests were travelling to Vila, obviously we can't all fit in one seaplane!! Some of our luggage arrived on a later seaplane, but again this was well organised and wasn't an issue. The seaplane transfer was breathtaking, amazing views, it's impossible to describe how beautiful the Maldives look from the air.

Everything at Vila is relaxed. There's no pestering selling the spa or excursions. The staff are amazing, they really do deserve their tips!!

The Asian Wok is a hidden gem. Perfect getaway in the afternoon for peace and tranquility. The team are really friendly, reasonably priced food (not inc on AI) and amazing Thai Green Curry!!

We decided to pay extra for the water villa rather than pay for excursions once we were here. We were not disappointed. Snorkelling straight off the steps of the water villa and you are directly on the reef seeing more fish and aquatic life than you can name!

Dinner is relaxed and casual. The food is hot (despite the buffet style,) tasty and not repeated in the two weeks we were here.

We had a perfect candlelit dinner under the moonlight on the beach, the staff are really helpful if you have any special occasions to celebrate.

This really is an amazing slice of paradise. Go and you won't regret it - but you won't want to leave!

We went back to Vilamendhoo in early October for a second visit to the island. This time, it was our Honeymoon trip.

On our three previous Maledives trips we always chose Emirates and flew from Zurich via Dubai to Male. This time we booked the direct flight from Zurich non-stop with Edelweiss. To be quite honest I'm a big fan of Emirates, but in the future, we will stick with the direct flight of Edelweiss. It shortens the travel time significantly, and the product offered by Edelweiss exceeded our expectations. The service, the meals (4 choices at Dinner, on a 10pm departure!), and the entertainment system is very good and keeps you well entertained throughout the 10 hours flight. The arrival in Malé and transfer to the seaplane terminal went quick and smooth, and within what felt like no time we were on our way to the island.

The check-in at Vilamendhoo was quick and smooth as well, and another short while later we already sat on our sun loungers in front of our water villa. One quick remark: The day of our arrival, almost every arriving couple or family was missing one bag upon arrival at the resort due to weight restrictions on the seaplane. Therefore, it is advisable to do a bit of mixing up when packing, just to make sure nobody has to wait until almost dinner time to get into his/her shorts...

The water villa was simply amazing. We spent our previous stay at Vilamendhoo in a jacuzzi beach villa which we found absolutely great too, however, the difference in size is quite substantial, and the private sun deck from which you have a spectacular view over the sea and into the sunsets is just phenomenal. Also, the possibility of snorkeling off your own door step is simply fantastic. It was the perfect choice for our honeymoon. So, if you're indecisive, don't hesitate and book the water villa, you won't regret it. Our room boy cleaned our villa twice a day and exchanged towels and bed linen regularly. He just did a great job, too.

The food at the Ahima restaurant was praised already in our last report, but yet again the chefs as well as the waiters (Hassan, Jameel, and Fakhira in particular) deserve a big compliment. Unfortunately, we don't know the names of the chefs. The quality and variety of the food on all three meals was outstanding, and the waiters do a great job altogether.

As repeat visitors we were invited to a special cocktail party one evening, hosted by the senior management of the resort. We appreciated that invitation very much and enjoyed the chat with a member of management that was truly interesting.

As last time, snorkeling and diving was great too. A special thank you to the entire dive center staff, I spent three great dives yet again. Despite being fully booked and almost out of rental equipment everything was very well run and went smooth and professional.

We had a great time yet again, and an absolutely unforgettable honeymoon. Thank you to the entire Vilamendhoo- and Eurodivers team. We're looking forward seeing you all again on our next visit!
