“Absolutely Perfect 4 days even with Flossie”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013 via mobile

The staff on the Club Level were very engaging. They anticipated all your needs and were able to make you feel like you were living at the hotel. The staff went out of their way to accomodate our request to leave early due to the on coming tropical storm, Flossie. They were very profesional in dealing with my request while ensuring everyone's safety. The property was beautiful. Even though the hotel was full, you did not get the feeling of being crowded. I think this is of the nicer Ritz properties. I would welcome an excuse to be able to return the the Ritz - Kapalua.

We loved our stay at the Ritz! Yes, it's on the windy side of the island, but the service and facilities more than make up for that. In fact, when we drove over to Wailea for a day it was so hot and sticky that it was uncomfortable. Everyone bunched up under umbrellas....couldn't wait to get back to the "windy side" for some relief. Anyway....the service, food, facilities are all top notch. Great service at the pool and plenty of chairs for everyone (not true everywhere). Loved eating breakfast next door at the store....short walk, outside seating, and very good food choices. Only negative of the entire trip was the main lobby bartender didn't know how to make a Manhattan....I guess most people get the umbrella drinks...it was undrinkable and our waiter agreed and comped both of our drinks (after trying a 2nd time...it was even worse)! That's the way to handle a situation like this and keep a customer happy. Overall, we loved the Ritz and look forward to our next visit.

Stayed at the Ritz for 1/2 of our Maui trip (see other review for the first 1/2 at the Fairmont). This is our 2nd trip to the Ritz Carlton and it still maintains the same charm as the first go. The property is big; a small hike to the beach. During our stay, the tennis courts & basketball courts were being refinished. Under normal circumstances, we'd pass this off, but we happened to be in Maui for a basketball tournament and our son was looking forward to getting practice in on a court, which believe it or not is very difficult to find on the island of Maui. I rate this property as excellent, because it's just a wonderful place to stay. The positives: The charm, the 3 tier pool, and the privacy and beauty of the property. The downside: We were traveling with our two boys, and staying in a regular room gets tight after a few days. The beds were not comfortable (I think they were doubles/not Queens), in fact one of the beds had pits on each side. We didn't want to hassle with a room change so our remedy was to trade around the beds amongst the four of us. We were not crazy impressed with the service as at our first trip. For this reason, if you can swing it, stay at the Concierge level - by far the best service we've ever exprienced at a hotel. Didn't do it this time around, though. It was tough to get chaises poolside, at times, but the attendants were glad to find space for you and set you up. I recommend Ritz because it's a far unique Maui experience; plantation feel with added luxury. Grounds are gorgeous, but you won't get your usual tropical island feeling here, which was fine by us. Kevin at the front desk was welcoming and helpful. Thank you! Other tips: Kapalua is WINDY! Hanging at this beach can be a little stressful and not as relaxing simply because there are often sandblasts that can cover you and all of your belongings. Worth a good laugh, but be aware. Nightime pool (open 24 hours, too!) is chilly, for this reason. Neverthless, a great getaway. Head to Honolua bay for excellent snorkeling, and the timeless Honolua general store close to the hotel for quick breakfast, fresh fruit, and cheap(er) beer & wine.

Room Tip: This hotel is terraced into a hillside, so if you get the lobby floor, you can actually be on floor...

We just got back from our excellent vacation in paradise on Maui. Stayed over July 18th through Wedn July 24th
Let me start with the things that to us are 10's. We don't have kids so if you are looking for help there we are sorry.
Wife spent time in the spa and she gave it a 10. The pool is excellent with its section for adults only and the property is our favorite and we have stayed at several 5 star resorts and hotels. Golf as a 10. Plantation is excellent and EXTREME in its challenge. My playing partner and I liked the Bay course better. Kind of a poor mans Spyglass Hill. Tree lined and fabulous and much easier. 88 on Plantation and 79 on Bay for me. The service and course conditions were perfect.
Next the room was fantastic. Room 1624 with two lanai's. It was a residence suite, and it was perfection. From the bathroom to the double 45 inch TVs to the kitchen and service. Another 10 was how people were always saying Aloha and the bell staff was particularly fast and friendly and knowledgable. We also had a fantastic breakfast one morning and it was a 10. Beach area is small secluded and wonderful. Good staff, golf carts to take you up and down the hill and great waves.

Ok, lesser things. Wind. It's Kapalua so it's windy there, but it's also cooler...so take the good with the bad. However, some people just don't expect it. We did. Pool staff. Not an issue of friendliness or quality of the drinks. Prices are expensive, so get ready to spend $8 for a domestic beer and $15 for a cocktail and $41 for shrimp cocktail. The other, (and it was probably just for the days we were there) was that the pool staff was under staffed. Not enough of them, and when you did get an order in they were VERY busy and it took a long time to fill the order. One beer and coke order took 15 minutes which might not seem long, but pouring a beer and two cokes should take 3 minutes. However, they were always smiling and apologizing.
Stores are expensive, but it's the Ritz. Got up the street to the Honolua store a 2 minute walk up the hill from the entrance to the hotel. Excellent place to save $$. Buy things outside and bring to the hotel. Even the staff expects it. Bell staff carts were stuffed with Costco and Safeway bags next to their luggage.
The ritz should add boggle boards to the beach though. You either have to buy them or go a mile away to rent them.

Still with all of our numerous vacations we rank this property on beauty and elegance and quality as #1. Even with the nitpicky things listed above we just can't give this hotel and stay anything less than a 5!!

Couples don't want to miss it. Families will expect a slower pace but excellent. I wouldn't recommend this for young couples who want to party. It's further away from the hotspots and not set up for it.

We will be back.

For a large property, this hotel has amazing service and great amenities. We loved the beach and it was the best part of our trip to sit under the trees and read and was also great for swimming. It does get a bit windy in the afternoons, but overall we found the weather to be delightful. Also close to the best snorkeling on the island by far.

Room Tip: Did Maui Mystery hotel deal and got a partial oceanview room on high floor overlooking golf course...

Enjoyed everything about this property... Stayed nine nights and didn't want to leave. The pool and beach were both great and we never had trouble finding a lounge chair. You expect great service at a Ritz, and the staff here did not disappoint. The best part, the employees are genuine and the delivery is unscripted...
The restaurant on the beach was a favorite. We had lunch there the day we arrived, and then went back on our 4th day. Our server from the first day (Marla) greeted us by name and quickly offered us the same beverage that we had ordered the first day we were there. WOW!!! From that point on we had lunch there daily.
Fitness Center is adequate and the view is great, but the workout equipment needs an upgrade.
Golf at Kapalua is the best in the islands. If you're a golfer, it should be on your bucket list.
Can't wait to go back...

Room Tip: One bedroom suites have microwave, dishwasher, mid-size refrigerator, large kitchen table which is s...

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights over 4th of July. I read a lot of reviews before choosing this hotel and it came down to staying in Whalers Village or here. I was initially concerned because a lot of the reviews said the beach and pool are windy. In the 7 days we were there we never had more than a breeze, in fact the weather was perfect even if it did rain off and on, it never stopped us from doing anything. I thought the beach was lovely, again there was a breeze but it was never windy to the point where you couldn't lay out or swim. There is a short walk to the beach but it is not far by any means and there is a shuttle that will take you back and forth. I was 7 months pregnant during our stay and I could make it back and forth just fine.

We left our 2 year old daughter at home but this is a great hotel for both couples and families, we talked about bringing our daughter with us next time. The pool area is nice and we never had problems getting chairs. There is an adult pool and it is sandwiched between two family pools. If you want utter quiet you won't find it at the adult pool, but it was never so loud that it bothered us.

The rooms were very nice and very clean. The housekeeping staff was great. In terms of service we had excellent service in all areas except a few. First we found the pool staff a bit slow. Most days we had to wait a bit for service and then for our drinks. This is true of the bar near the lobby too if you sit at one of the tables outside. One night we waited 30 minutes and finally my husband went inside to get our drinks. When a waiter did approach us he didn't apologize and acted annoyed we already had our drinks. Now that I think about it I found all of the restaurants a little slow but the people were very friendly.

The front desk was ok, we checked in at 11am and our room wasn't ready. No big deal check in wasn't until 4 but I did notify the hotel in advance we would be early. She told us the previous people were checked out and she had housecleaning going there straight away and it would be much longer than 1pm though she didn't want to quote us a time (2 hours to clean a room seems reasonable!) We went to the pool in the meantime, long story short we didn't get our room until 3pm.

On the bright side the recommendations we got from concierge were excellent except 1 restaurant we didn't like (Ko.) The Valet staff was probably the best of them all. They always remembered us and helped me in and out of the car.

A couple suggestions if you stay here: Get the breakfast package it's definitely worth it. Explore Kapalua by taking walks it's a great area and seems a bit underrated. Eat at Merriman's in Kapalua it was fantastic food with a great view, we took the shuttle there in 5 minutes. We also had lunch at the Plantation course Clubhouse which you can do even if you don't golf. The views were incredible and the food was good and reasonably priced (for Hawaii haha.) You can take the shuttle there too.

To sum up I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. I loved Kapalua and everything about it. Whalers Village was too crazy for my style. The reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the few service issues in the restaurants and for the price everything better well be perfect!!!
