“Nicely laid out Ritz resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Nicely laid out Ritz carlton resort in Maui. It is in Kapalua, so away from all the hustle and bustle, has a private beach, the hotel is spaced out nicely so its not overcrowded especially when you have families around. The pool is big, they have a nice ground for golf, walking and jogging. Overall a good property.

Room Tip: Try to get the club room, you get practically everything for free, they have a good afternoon tea an...

Just returned from a 5-night vacation over Thanksgiving in Maui (purchased as part of a Costco travel package). The Ritz was our home away from home. I think the luxury properties have a tough hill to climb with review sites like TA because as a traveler, my expectations are much higher than they are with a budget or mid-range property. So we arrived in Kapalua with expectations high and I am happy to report the Ritz did not disappoint. They met and exceeded expectations our entire stay. Every point of contact we had at the hotel was friendly, efficient and hospitable. Due to flight delays we arrived very early on Maui and the property immediately offered to have our room ready early as they knew we were tired from the trip. On every outing we embarked on, they had either helpful suggestions or in the case of our sunrise crater trip, very warm blankets for us which you should definitely take them up on! We did use the spa and both of us found our therapists to be quite good and the facilities excellent. Kudos to the Ritz - you lived up to the brand values you present to us travelers.

Room Tip: We stayed in a one-bedroom suite with a partial ocean view and loved it. Two sitting areas on the pa...

With a brand name like Ritz Carlton and the prices that are charged to stay there, you have a certain expectation that you will get what you pay for - which should be a lot. Well this definitely is not the case. It seems as though the hotel relies on the location and physical aspects of the hotel (because it is gorgeous) to wow the guests. The service was mediocre to say the least. The check in process was fast however, no information about the hotel, facilities or anything was mentioned. Nor was the process of holding money on the credit card for incidentals. I am aware of the process of holding money because I work as a receptionist in a large brand name hotel, and trust me, you need to notify people of this process to save everyone a lot of headaches and trouble. We were told somebody would show us to our room however that didn't happen so we had to walk aimlessly around the massive property to ask someone where our room was. Pretty poor after traveling for 24 hours. The room itself is absolutely gorgeous, as is the property itself. The breakfast was decent but took quite sometime to get extra hot water an so on. Also a note, you have to hire a car if staying here because it is literally in the middle of nowhere so be warned. A magnificent property and room that was let down by its service, such a shame for a mother and daughter who saved for the last six months to stay here.

The location was beautiful and the service was great - but the rooms certianly were not even a 4 star hotel. The carpets were old and where we stayed was in need of upgrades. We did the concierge-level and it was very nice there. The grounds were not as well kept as they should be - there were beer cans by one of the hammocks for over 24 hours - I had to call to have them picked up. I love maui, but will not stay at the Ritz again.

The hotel was fabulous. The view from our balcony was exquisite, overlooking the pools, grounds, and the ocean down below. Our favorite spot was the double-chase lounges at the beach bar area. It was gorgeous, just a few feet away from the private beach, and few people seemed to know about them. Euforia. The walk down there was a bit of a distance and down a fairly steep incline, so the hotel had a golf cart that took people up and down from the pool area to the beach on a regular basis.

Only disappointment was that the Banyon Tree restaurant was closed for renovation, and the hotel didn't open the sushi restaurant for any extra days or hours to compensate. We could still get in-room dining and lobby lounge food, but it wasn't the same. Fortunately, the hotel had a shuttle, and they took us to a nice restaurant nearby and picked us up when we were finished.

Also terrifically convenient was a little store within walking distance from the hotel that sold everything from wine, cheese, salads, and fruit to gifts, apparel, and toiletries. We stopped in there almost daily.

We booked this hotel after reading all the great reviews on Trip Adviser! I am not one to review, but thought I would share. My family and I go to Hawaii every year for Thanksgiving. We have stayed in Maui before and love the resort style service many of the hotels offer. The Ritz at Kapalua was a huge disappointment. Before staying here do some homework.
-Our room was clean, however the bed left me with a horrible backache. The mattress is old, or worn. The walls are thin and we could hear the neighbor’s baby crying at 6am in the morning.
-The pools are ok during the day, but plan on getting a chair early, they run out of chairs and towels. If you go there after 6pm for an evening dip, the pool is full of dirty towels, some even floating in the pool! They have the pool open, but no service attendants, so it’s a struggle to find a clean towel. The other hotels in the area are much better suited for kids, this pool is your basic pool no slides.
-Beautiful beach, however there is no service; no lounge chairs, nothing. We understand its not their beach, but its right by the hotel, so seems a wasted opportunity to provide that extra service for the guests.
-There are no kids’ activities, no kid’s camp, so not kid friendly, other than the small baby pool and park. Most hotels in Lahaina have kids activities, kid camps and so much more!
-If you are hungry on a Sunday night you have 3 options Sushi, Sushi and room service. Kai, the restaurant on property was nothing special, the tempura shrimp normally is cooked in a batter that’s edible, this one we had to remove as it and just eat the shrimp. They never answered the phone after calling the front desk and restaurant itself, I ended up walking to the restaurant just to make reservations.
The other option is to take a shuttle to Sansei, which is less than 3 minutes away by shuttle. They have great food, I would highly recommend this restaurant if you come to Maui.
-We ordered room service twice. Both times they took 90 minutes and the food was cold! They said they have had some staffing problems and didn’t have someone to bring it up!
-For Thanksgiving we ate The Ritz Thanksgiving buffet. It was very small, not many options. They did have a hula girl dance and live music, but it was mediocre at best. Our bill for dinner was $260 for 2 adults and a 6 year old, which was not worth the price. The other shows we have been to in previous years, was far superior in food, service and entertainment.
Overall, we will not be back. For the price we paid, we expected better then this. There are many great options in Maui; unfortunately The Ritz Carlton has lost our business in Maui.

Celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. They upgraded our room, which made us really feel special. Everything was First Class. Great Hotel. Beautifully kept grounds. Wish we could have stayed longer!
