“Nice scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014

Occupying the compound of a former monastery the hotel offers modern rooms, partially in minimalistic design, in historic houses or buildings added later on paying respect to the locations charm. The inner part of the monastery is a museum, in parts of it a museum of modern art found its place.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the ideal place to stay. Your contact with nature is enjoyable. It has a very interesting museum that combines perfectly the old and the contemporary. The tour of the Closter is very informative. The food at the restaurant is delicious and gives you a good introduction to the Thurgovian Food. I recommend it if you want to experience the Swiss Natural Healthy Living way of life. The apples in this region are amazing.

Surprised is an understatement ... blown away may be a better way to describe how impressed I was. This 500 year old monestary has been so tastefully renovated that I couldn't help but explore the whole property. The use of different materials (wood, stone, concrete, metals), varying shapes and angles, and preservation of the old architecture and character are really remarkable.

And there is much to see ... don't miss the original chapel, the original water wheel, book binder, wood shop, dairy / cheese production and vineyards. The rooms are also a discovery. Peaceful, simple and extraordinarly finished.

Service was top notch. Great food. And endless amounts of their home made cheeses, beer and wine.

Only 30 minutes from Zurich. Definitely worth a visit if you want to experience old world charm tastefully modernized and, at the same time, preserved.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2011

This huge monastery has had a very changeful history since its foundation in 1150! The most impressing piece is the stunning Baroque Church (one of the most beautiful in Europe) as well as the remaining of the monastery (like the monk's cells), later transformed into a large farming operation. Many things are still visible, and the herb garden is just amazing (at least in Summer)!

The entire monastery has been transformed into a hotel/seminar center with restaurant at a very high level, combining modern, fancy design with referrals to the monastery life. If you like exceptional settings, you should try this out.

Rooms are very nice and reasonably big, and the restaurant serves good local food, using products from the farm and the region. Only flaw is the quality of the service in the restaurant - they are slow, tend to forget you, or get irritated because a guest decides to take the breakfast in the garden rather than in the breakfast room. I hope that the manager reads these lines: if he manages to gear up his team, this place would be flawless.

Room Tip: Take a two bed room rather than a double room
