“Balinese treasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

You go here for the location - the only resort in the national park, with easy access to Menjangan island's wonderful coral reefs. Snorkelling tours to the island were wonderful and off the resort beach is quite good, there was very little rubbish on the beach out front, and what is there is outside their property and probably from fishing boats so it's unfair to blame the resort. The black leaf monkeys (plus wild deer, lewak, lots of birds) visit daily and provide great entertainment. The basic structure is very good, e.g. bungalow 6 is lovely inside, but there is a basic problem that the owners really need to maintain the buildings, as some of the rooms are apparently unusable. The low season price is reasonable, the peak season price excessive especially for its current condition. All the staff were very professional and Balinese-friendly. Food, cleanliness, boat transfer, information all very good - the breakfast was GREAT! but the menu a bit expensive, it would benefit from a few local dishes as well as all the good seafood. This place will suit visitors who forgive that it is a bit remote (this is it's attraction!) , generates its own electricity, and occasionally runs out of kitchen ingredients.

Room Tip: One villa is in disrepair, the other is near the generator. Choose a Lanai room!

the location of the formerly called waka shorea beach resort, is superb. located far away from the noise in the middle of westbali national park with boat service from the little village 10 min away. coming close to this place by boat you get thrilled about the natural beauty of the beach location, unspoiled and peaceful. but as soon as you step landside you feel beeing on a dying place.

the resort is totally run down as they have only a few of the cottages in function. i cant complain about the cottage #9 we occupied in terms of interior design, cleanliness but wherever you look around you see destroyed equippment, buildings and rubbish.
the staff on duty was friendly and also upset about the lack of interest by the overall management, by the way we never faced any person in charge for the resort. breakfast was good and we also appreciated free teetime afternoons. on the second evening, by the way we have been the only guest's they run out of beer after one single order.

the food menu for dinner is boring, overpriced and whithout any freshness even in terms of variety. well guest have no chance to go elswhere so they ripp your wallet that way.
as part if the national park deer and monkeys strolling around which is nice, but includes theyr leftovers as well everywhere.
we liked snorkelling right from the jetty and on of the positive facts is free equippment for that kind of activity. the see is lukewarm with plenty of fish to be captured ( even no fresh fish on the menue...)
on the other hand, the beach is not only dirty because its nature beach, human made waste elsewhere as throughout the resort. nobody takes care of it, destroyed deckchairs, a poor kept saltwater pool ... and so on.
verdict: stay away from this place to put even more pressure on the private owner to upgrade the resort or to sell it to new owners who have the vision and power to turn this natur retreat with its potential into an eco Ressort as it should be. basically this place sucks and made us feel as uncomfortable as the staff felt lost and sad about.

Great location, but everything is falling apart (rooms, boats, amenities, etc). As others have pointed out, photos are from when it opened 15 years ago! We had power cuts, water outages, and (friendly) staff that are unable to do much about fixing things that have been neglected for the last decade. Avoid!

Waka Shorea Resort (or Shorea Beach Resort) is a fantastic place, hard to find elsewhere in Bali, and hard to categorise. It's quiet, surrounded by beautiful snorkelling water and narrow white coral and sand beach. It is also a 5-minute boat ride from the exquisite snorkelling of Menjangan Island and has views of mountains all around. It is rustic - for the same price as a luxury hotel in Ubud you get facilities that are run-down, for which the manager apologises, and the odd scurrying visitor at night-time. But you also get monkeys, mongoose, deer, wild pig and a waterside location. You get an interesting and lovely experience - a taste of the old Bali perhaps.

Room Tip: The two villas are beachfront, other rooms are set back and higher. Bring strong insect repellant fo...

When you read all of the reviews for Shorea Beach Resort (formerly Waka Shorea) it'll be clear that this isn't Club Med. If you demand pristine cleanliness above all else, go somewhere else. If you think you'd enjoy sleeping in a private bungalow (meters from any other buildings) in a national park, stay here. BTW, I'm not saying that Shorea is dirty. It's not; the staff cleaned our room and gave us fresh towels daily. When you remember that you're staying in a national park in buildings designed to limit environmental impact, well....

Do yourself a favour. Stay here. Going diving off Menjangan Island one day. Do nothing the next. Enjoy!

Like another reviewer said, Shorea could be so much more. Several things need to be added or fixed at the hotel. The location is in a park and remote, which we loved, but the hotel is run down and basics have been overlooked or neglected. We had to wake up the staff on the mainland so we could get a boat to the hotel when we arrived around noon. Beach chairs should be available along the water. There a few places to sit besides your room and the restaurant. The Air conditioners in the rooms do not cool off the rooms and need to be replaced. Rats in the rooms are not OK for a hotel of this price. We all had rats come at night (in 3 different rooms). There should be awnings or umbrellas on the villa decks and by the pool and beach because of the strong sun. The diving location is amazing but $95 for a 2 tank dive with a 10 minute boat ride is outrageous. (Fortunately the diving is great and the snorkeling off the hotel's dock is fabulous). The breakfast was excellent but the other meals were just OK and twice the price of the rest of our trip. On the bright side, the staff is very friendly, the proximity to good diving can't be beat, you can get a decent massage at the spa, and there are deer, monkeys and pigs all over the property.

My daughter (21) and I stayed here for 2 nights and absolutely loved it, was everything and more than we expected. Yes it is remotely located, part of the adventure is getting there, but you arrive to a natural wonderland so you have to have an appreciation for this not 5 star luxury. You'll have an aquarium to swim, snorkel and dive in out front, deer wandering freely throughout your daily activities, monkeys in the trees, we had wild pigs come see us on our deck, geckos checking out your luggage, rodents live here to - so keep any food or the likes in fridge, they like toothpaste and electronic cables too - put these somewhere safe at night, it all adds to the fun experience here. We have dived a lot of 1st class dive sites in the world, as a dive site this is unique, fun and really good, nice water temp, dived in bikini, no stingers. It's just a 10min boat trip to Menjangan which is great. We enjoyed our meals, did cycling trip to starlings center - again a fun ride, good guide and good bikes - got really dusty but washed off at the end with a snorkel at sunset - a beautiful way to end our day. Dinner is served on the beach, breakfast in a treetop pavilion. We enjoyed a massage during our stay, open air treetop level.

Room Tip: We stayed in Lanai 14, great view.
