This hotel advertises itself as: "This family-run hotel is pleasantly located a short stroll from the city centre. A friendly welcome is assured and both business and leisure guests choose the Carlton on a regular basis".
Well - we recieved a somewhat surly welcome, but, in mitigation, the receptionist seemed very stressed. The public rooms are spacious and clean. The bedroom, however, was small, tired, cramped and with a grubby carpet in the bathroom (yuk). The bed was small, uncomfortable and creaky. There was a velux window over the bed which had a blind that did not work and it was like sleeping in a tent when the rain hammered on the glass.
The short stroll to town is down a very steep hill which the less fit may find somewhat arduous to negotiate back up.
The breakfast was excellent, with very cheery and helpful service. We did not use the bar or other facilities.
Other guests thought it a reasonable hotel, but the bedroom spoiled it for us.
