“Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

Me and my partner stayed for 2 nights in this amazing B+B. From booking the room till the moment we were waved off, Meryl was absolute perfection!

She is one of the kindest and warmest ladies i have met, nothing was ever too much trouble. The place feels like home and you just feel relaxed as soon as you step through the door. The smell of freshly baked bread hit us as soon as we walked in, from that point i knew i was going to love it there.

Its a very personal service that you get here and you are really made to feel so welcome. The room that we stayed in was really lovely too, everything that you would need is there for you and if you needed anything that wasn't, Meryl would have it for you within seconds!

The Breakfast is something not to be missed too, the homemade bread and rolls were amazing! If you come away from Breakfast unsatisfyed, there is truly something wrong with you. So much food was presented, i didn't know what to eat first.

I would have loved to have stayed here longer, i will be recommending this to every single person i know.

Thank you again!

We stayed with John and Meryl in June. They were exceptionally welcoming and helpful especially as we were only able to stay one night. Accommodation was of the highest standard and our bed extremely comfortable. The cooked breakfast was superb with home made rolls and locally sourced products. Would make a point to return when next in the area.

A perfect base from which to explore this most beautiful part of Cornwall, this b and b offers first class accommodation at affordable prices. The owners are delightful; neither over-bearing, nor under-caring, they strike a perfect balance of hospitality which makes this such a great place to stay. The rooms are immaculate; the food carefully and thoughtfully prepared. It is simple and superb. UK bed and breakfast at its best.

We have never really been B&B people but a last minute Cornwall trip, luckily, found all the best hotels full. We came to Gwel An Vala because the website said a) it's a 5* B&B and, b) no kids. John and Merryl are simple the most generous, elegant and generous hosts. They understand the balance between hospitality and warmth balanced with their guests desire for privacy. The house is lovely and nothing, I mean really nothing, is lacking from the smart hotels (I'm including Tresanton) except perhaps the sea view. But then, Philleigh has a better local pub than St Mawes and it's 2 mins walk! Highly recommended.
Oh, and save your appetite for the breakfast!

We have just returned from a 3 day stay at Meryl and John's beautiful home in Philleigh.

You are made to feel at home from the moment you step across the the threshold.

My husband booked the Pendower room which has a fantastic en-suite with a huge corner bath, a 6ft wide extremely comfortable bed, beautiful crisp white bedding, large white fluffy towels, slippers, bathrobes and your own decking area which you access through French doors.

The attention to detail is phenomenal, it is spotlessly clean and nothing is ever too much trouble, from booking a table for dinner to chilling the bottle of champagne we had brought along and even supplying Royal Doulton chilled champagne glasses to our room on a tray.

The breakfasts we ate in the conservatory were delicious and were made using local produce of the very finest ingredients. I opted for the scrambled eggs on both days with my full English and they were beautiful.

Meryl also provided sliced fresh fruit, home baked (by John) bread rolls, juice, yoghurts and many other choices on the breakfast menu.

John and Meryl are attentive hosts without being intrusive and to top it all there is not a child in sight.

I have stayed in 5* hotels but nothing compares to Gwel an Vala, which we consider to be a luxurious haven of peace and tranquility.

Called at Gwel-an-Vala without appointment to view any accommodation which might be available, explaining to lovely Meryl that we already had been badly let down by a hotel in St Mawes and we might need somewhere for one or two nights. Meryl happily invited me in and led me through the immaculate bungalow to a massive bedroom and bathroom showing me another room with wet room on the way through. What was there to think about really - it was lovely. We returned to St Mawes to confirm we would not be staying the night there! We stayed two fabulous nights at Gwel-an-Vala. I will list what we experienced to make it easier: all the house is spotlessly clean and very well looked after, recently refurbished; very spacious and very clean bedroom with huge bed swathed in best quality white linen, ample pillows and cushions: tv with dvd and selection of dvds in the room: tea and coffee making facilities: a little plate of fresh fruit: fluffy white towelling bathrobes to match the towels in the bathroom. Decked area with our own table and chairs and steps leading down to the garden. The 4 piece bathroom suite again was immaculate with good quality toiletries. We were there on the rainiest weekend Cornwall has probably experienced in some time so could not make use of the patio area but we imagined sitting there drinking a bottle of wine before going off to the local pub for a meal (more of that later). We were given a cream tea in the conservatory once we had settled in on our first day - breakfast was fabulous; in my case smoked salmon with scrambled egg and tomatoes, local butchery products used. Nothing was too much trouble for Meryl and John. John showed us where everything was in the room and how the heating worked. Tickets for the local ferry are also available there. The pub (can't remember the name) served very good food at reasonable prices and John will book for you. It is a short walk from John and Meryls. The location is rural, quiet and peaceful. No sea view but more than made up for by being so well looked after. Not the cheapest place to stay but I know I'll be back if I get half a chance and have no hesitation in recommending it. On departure felt like old friends and really want to thank John and Meryl for rescuing our weekend break. Parking is in front of the house and off the road.

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms and I believe all will be quiet and very well presented here.
