“Light and Shadow”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2013

This hotel belongs to the richest man of Gran Canaria, Mr Lopesan, who made his fortune in the construction business. Why could he not construct a hotel that is less clairaudient? You can hear your neighbours talking in their room, you can hear every noise from the corridors (a second door in the large rooms would help!). And why does he not heat the pools to a decent temperature? We tried the pool temperature at the other hotels (RUI and Seaside), and the pool water was at a decent temperature. Not so at Lopesan Hotels: hardly anybody in the pools because the water was simply too cold. I know that it costs money to heat the pools (the weather was quite cloudy when we were there in early December), but when you pay such a price for a 5 star hotel, you expect the pool temperature around 23 degrees.

The quality of the food was good for the breakfast buffet, but not so good for the dinner buffet: You could again feel the cost cutting exercise: the beef stew did not have good quality meat and was completely overcooked, the puddings were too sweet and not of good quality. For a hotel of this standard, you can expect more.

The wine list need a helping hand too: The red wines were good, the white ones need some higher end qualities to be added.

The SPA is a strongpoint: it is by far the best on the island, but again: even here, the indoor pool temperature became colder every day. And being obliged to wearing bathsuits in the Finnish sauna simply stinks.

A strange thing is the pool towel policy: no towel service between noon and 3 p.m. Why? This is the time when people are at the pool.

Since the buffet restaurant did not meet our expected standards, we went every night to the a-la-carte restaurant. This restaurant deserve a big praise: the food was really very good, and the winelist much better. The service was very good.

The verdict for the Villa del Conde: room for improvement.

The hotel was suggested by our travel agent. Our request to her was somewhere we could completely relax after a stressful year. We were not disappointed. On checking in we asked for a quiet room with a balcony and were given a choice. The room we chose (2122) was very peaceful, overlooking the garden area to the side. We could just about see the light from the lighthouse in an evening. As others have said the rooms are very spacious. The cleanliness and service we received throughout was everything expected in a 5 star hotel. The staff really look like they enjoy their jobs and always go around with a smile on their faces working tirelessly serving the guests. Nothing is too much trouble for them. We booked just bed and breakfast as we were told it was self service at dinner and we wanted to be pampered. For breakfast there was everything from Champagne to baked beans with everything in between. We usually found a table in what they called the garden room, more like a conservatory, for our full English. Lunch was a sandwich in the pool bar overlooking the promenade. We ate dinner in the Ova restaurant on two occasions, the first was excellent but the second very poor which we could only put down to maybe it being the chef's day off. Our favourite place for dinner, was a ten minute stroll along the promenade to the café/restaurants there and, after trying them all, we settled on the Sea & Golf for delicious food at reasonable prices served by friendly staff. The one thing which I could say that was bad about the hotel was more amusing than bad. Like every hotel these days there is the notice in the bathroom about re-using towels to save the environment however, after every guest at breakfast, the table clothes were changed for clean ones whether they were soiled or not. This really made me smile.

Room Tip: Every room has a different balcony design and outlook so very hard to chose 'the best'. Ask...

Where to begin? With the good, I suppose and what was good really was very good:

Impressively designed for a new resort (2004) with lots of local Canarian architectural features and spread over lots of smaller buildings designed to look like a village surrounding a main square and a magnificent reception building modelled on the church from nearby Aguimes (which is definitely worth a visit, by the way). Beautiful and well maintained gardens and several different pools areas catering for different guests. During our stay there was loads of space everywhere for everybody, but suspect that was because the hotel wasn't full (more of later).

Room was spacious and bright and although we hadn't paid extra for a sea view, the garden view was very pleasant (and we did have a bit of a sideways sea view). Reasonably well furnished and a good bathroom. I was slightly disturbed by the uber-life-sized mural of a naked child running along a beach over the bed, but presume it was supposed to be cute...

Unlike other reviews, we found the staff universally extremely friendly and helpful and could not fault them in any way.

Breakfast was probably the most extensive we have ever experienced with every type of food imaginable and plenty of it - wear your walking shoes the first day and check it all out before you make any choices - it is vast! The other good news is that goes on until 11 and, because of the range of age and nationality of the guests, all of whom conform to stereotype in relation to when they have breakfast (no need to explain...) it is never too busy...

The other very pleasant surprise is that all the restaurants have terraces which are NON SMOKING which is a relief compared to the almost compulsory smoking to be found on terraces everywhere else on the island.

So what about the bad...

Well, although it is a great design, it does lack anything authentic and sometimes therefore atmosphere - it is akin to something you might expect to find in Disney or Las Vegas. The scale of the place also means that is that it is very spread out and can be a bit confusing - my partner didn't manage to find the way back to our room in one attempt until the last morning. I usually have a good sense of direction, but took me a while to work it out. It also has very long and empty corridors connecting buildings, all with hard surfaces which does make noise in the rooms. Again, it didn't bother us too much as the hotel wasn't busy, but suspect it could be a problem.

The other problem with the hotel not being full was that they only opened the buffet restaurant in the evening and did not offer the range and choice of restaurants that they advertise which was disappointing, as our idea of dinner isn't to serve ourselves... It also meant that the bars and other areas were very quiet and lacking atmosphere - a quiet drink in the bar was one where you were completely alone, which might appeal to some!

Free wifi was only available in the central Plaza, but the coverage was poor and irregular.

Now for the really ugly...

Despite its being new and apparently modern, there are some real throwbacks to old Spanish hotels of the 1980s. Extra charge to use the safe in your room - only a small charge, so it's not the money so much as the attitude; photos laid out at breakfast from the night before which was reminiscent of the Spanish barbecue of yesteryear - we didn't work out if they were to be paid for or not. Worst of all was the institutionalised 'entertainment' in the evenings... The bars and restaurants are located around a central plaza and in the centre of the plaza every night was the most appalling 'entertainment' which was straight out of the 70s. It did seem to appeal to certain nationalities (no need to name them) but was frankly atrocious. I have no problem with 'entertainment' of this or any type being provided but it needs to be contained - taking place in the plaza meant that it could be heard in all parts of the resort, including our room (which was nowhere near the plaza, so suspect in rooms actually on it, it was unbearable). At least it finished every night promptly at 11, but up to then we couldn't bear to be anywhere near it. On our last night when one other restaurant with table service finally opened, although tempted to try it, we realised that the evening was going to be completely destroyed by the music we were going to be subjected to. So much for a terrace without smoking - the noise pollution promised to be just as bad!

Overall it wasn't a bad experience and probably as good as it gets in that part of the world, but needs a few changes to the guest experience for it to deliver what it sets out to and to cater for the range of clients that a resort of this scale needs to be able to accommodate.

The Lopesan VDC is a very large well run hotel in a great location in the quiet upmarket resort of Meloneras.

We booked a standard garden view room. We had Emailed the hotel some weeks in advance, asking, if possible, for a standard garden view room on the top floor with some sun to its balcony.
We received a prompt reply saying they would do their best to accommodate our wishes.
On arrival we discovered we had been allocated a ground floor room with a completely enclosed balcony . Hey Ho !

The room was large, with a walk in wardrobe, ensuite with bath and seperate shower and a good size lounge area with flat screen TV and mini bar. No tea or coffee making facilities.
Despite the size the room was not what you would hope for in a 5 star hotel . It was functional rather than luxurious. It was stark and bare rather than plush, there were no carpets or soft furnishings, the style was shabby chic, with the emphasis on shabby. Some truly awful “art” on the walls
However the beds were high quality and comfortable and the standard of cleaning was high.
As you might expect in an hotel built from concrete with tiled floors throughout and no carpet or soft furnishings noise transmission is a serious problem, especially from above. This is major concern that could ruin your stay.
However the nature of the resort and the age of hotel clientele, at least outside of school holidays ,
means everyone is usually fast asleep by midnight and rise at reasonable hour, if you are lucky !

One minor annoyance, which is laughable in an hotel claiming to be 5 star , is a €2.50 per night charge for the room safe. Increase the tariff if you must, but include the room safe !

Contrary to some reports there is free WiFi. Its outside in the Plaza and very slow/weak. Its adequate, with patience, to read/send simple emails and check the newspapers from home.

The gym is well equiped and little used.
The swimming pools are extensive and the grounds well kept.
There are plenty of sunbeds, enough for all, but they are very close together. You will truly understand the meaning of the expression “cheek by jowl” !

The cost of drinks and snacks in the hotel is resonable. The entertainement in the Plaza each evening is very good. The house band is excellent and the visiting acts each night are of a good quality with a reasonable variety of entertainment even if you are there for two weeks.

Breakfast is a buffet with a wide range of good quality food.
For dinner A La Carte restaurants are available at extra cost. The standard dining room is buffet. There are two sittings 1800 to 1930 and 2000 to 2200. The quality of the food is excellent.
The guests are predominantly German and this is reflected in the choices of food available.

The two fixed sittings rather than continuous service means that the buffet is a scrum !
Everyone arrives at the same sections at the same time. You have to hunt around to create a meal often whilst negotiating a large milling crowd.
It was anything but an elegant dining experience, more like a busy motorway service station when ten coaches have arrived at the same time.
When the hotel is full the dining room isn't really big enough .

All the staff were excellent, highly efficient, pleasant and polite.

Not really 5 star but all in all a very good holiday hotel, but the “on your marks, get ready, go “ stressful dining means we will not be returning unless they change.

Room Tip: Noise is a problem. Because of the construction materials all the rooms are potentially "holida...

Positives
- Lovely architecture with traditional Canarian style buildings
- friendly and professional service (reception, breakfast, bellboys)
- we interacted with two different bellboys at the beginning and at the end of the stay. Apart from asking us about our stay, they knew were we had been sitting at the pool, that we had brought a couple of friends one day and our room number by heart (there must be a thousand rooms in that hotel!)
- Complete and quality breakfast with several Mediterranean delicatessen
- Enough space to relax and find a quite space by the pool
- Spacious room
- we had just got married and were received with a bottle of cava

Negatives
- breakfast could get a bit packed and loud at "rush" hour
- Although we had just got married and closed a small deal with the hotel by bringing some guests to their Lopesan hotels we were given what felt like an average room "view-wise"
- Wi-Fi: first, it costs c. €6 a day. In this century Wi-Fi should almost be like water and light, particularly when you are paying the hotel +€200/night. They did provide free Wi-Fi in one terrace area of the hotel but it was very slow plus the hotel is huge so needed a long walk to get there. Second, even though we tried paying for it, it didn't work properly. Important for people who need to work to get good quality Wi-Fi.

Other
- we paid double the price of what we were paying in H10 meloneras (which I intend to review in the coming days) a couple of days before and although clearly better it didn't feel as such a huge upgrade
- Similar experience to the Salobre hotel (see my separate review from a couple of years ago). This one has beach the other one has sort of mountain.

We holidayed for the 4th time at The Villa in June this year & as usual the hotel & staff exceeded our expectations. I love this place & would be hard pressed to find somewhere else that matched it. Normally we would also take a winter break at the hotel but retirement & a house move have put paid to that this year. However we've already booked for 21 nights here next June & we are eagerly looking forward to returning to sample the delights offered by Lopesan at this outstanding hotel. A special thank you once again to Fidel & Dani whose staff do a superb job :))

We stayed here for a week on half board courtesy of Thomson holidays. Mercedes limo from the airport which was very welcome after a very long day. The main reception area certainly has the wow factor and styled like an old church with vaulted ceilings. Check in was very easy but no welcome drink, no doubt due to the fact we arrived at 1:30am. Had to ask for a coffee instead. The receptionist wanted our accommodation voucher which he said should have been given to us, I'm sorry we've never ever had one of those on a package holiday before. Phone call to Thomsons 24/7 helpline to sort that out.

We booked a suite and got some nicely appointed rooms with a huge bathroom. All spotlessly clean and in immaculate condition. We had Tea and Coffee making facilities which is a bit of a rarity in this part of the world it seems. Very large comfortable bed with a pillow menu at extra cost. Use of the room safe is at extra cost too and it's the first time I've had to pay for one at a 5* hotel. This should be included particularly in the more upmarket rooms. Room service twice a day, once for cleaning and once for turn down service and towels. Two flat-screen TVs but less than a handful of English channels. In fairness English guests are in the minority here. The walls aren't good at keeping out the sounds of neighbours, bathrooms, patio furniture and late night revellers being the worst offenders but nothing too serious.

The hotel grounds are well planted and kept in immaculate condition. The hotel is laid out like a village with a central plaza and numerous areas for sunbathing. The hotel was full but we never had a problem finding an empty sun bed. Needless to say the best spots got bagged early on by people placing their towels down and then wandering off for hours at a time. Pools are kept immaculately clean and well maintained. Only one lifeguard to cover all the pools but they were constantly circling the resort. Best spot for us was around the quiet pool, which isn't all that quiet if it's full of kids. The management should ideally make this an adults-only area, there are plenty of other (five) pools, excluding the Spa, of varying sizes around the grounds for children. There is a main sunbathing area looking out over the sea with a small bar but this was very popular and far too crowded for my liking, I do like a bit of personal space. By looking around and you could always find somewhere quieter and a bit less cramped.

Food was good and plentiful in the main buffet with some show cooking on occasions and a different theme every night. The main buffet isn't large enough to cope with all the guests eating at once so there are two sittings which I found a tad annoying. I like to eat around 7:30 but that wasn't possible, you either have to eat an hour earlier or wait until after 8pm when the queue has gone and the second sitting is in progress. There is an overflow restaurant on the opposite side of the plaza which we used one night due to our late arrival (8:45pm) for dinner but the staff there were somewhat indifferent. We weren't shown to a table, unlike the buffet, I asked to sit outside and was told the tables were all taken but I never saw anyone eating at them. Not offered any drinks so had to hunt down a member of staff just to get a bottle of water, which isn't included with meals because it's bottled. The layout of the main buffet is a bit frustrating, there are two cooking stations with room dividers on either side creating a chicane where bumping into people is inevitable, either that or you just cant get past.

The main Plaza outside has a Pub and a couple of shops The main shop for staples is only open 3 hours a day (9 – 12am) but doesn't sell bottled water. The Pub doesn't open until 6pm but stays open until 2am. The nightclub above the plaza opens from 11:30 until 2am. The entertainment in the Plaza was quite good with different acts each night with live music before and after the main event. The chairs in the plaza are cast iron with comfortable seat cushions, or at least there would be if guests didn't keep pinching them to use as seat backs. Drinks service is very good despite being packed with all the chairs taken. Free wifi in the plaza and about the best service anywhere in the hotel. There is also in internet café with a good number of PCs available. Wifi is an extra-cost item if you have a standard room. We had free wifi with our suite but it's probably the worst service I've had anywhere in the world (apart from Cuba) it hardly worked at all during our stay.

The staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble, I even got a courtesy call to ask how our stay was progressing, were we happy with our room, anything we needed etc. which was a nice touch. Just about every member of staff acknowledged you with a friendly greeting as they passed by. It's the warm welcome you get from the staff, who all work exceptionally hard to make your stay enjoyable, that make you easily forgive any little niggles.
