“Almost perfect but reservations about rebooking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

We stayed from 3rd March for one week

Although we had a brilliant Holiday, all of our party (4) suffered to varying degrees with sickness and diarrhoea,(from general discomfort to missing up to 2 days of the holiday). Talking to other guests it appears that other people had also suffered in this way.
Many other references in this respect have been posted this year on Trip advisor and this together with the health warning posted on the hotel notice board, leads us to conclude that the hotel DOES have a problem in this respect that needs addressing.
All the food looked appetizing, tasted good and was well presented and we really wanted to discount the previous "Trip Advisor" comments in this respect as insignificant, however our experiences do not allow this.
The sickness problems are the only negative of our stay, however this is also the ONE thing that would deter us from re-booking again at the hotel.
On a positive note the hotel was very comforable, the staff were brilliant and the location and views are fantastic.

We did not experience any other of the problems experience by other guests and our experiences in respect of these is detailed below.

The transfer of luggage from coach to the hotel was brilliant with Crystal and hotel staff working like trojans.
We had no problem with any noise from the hotel lift.
The rooms are comforable, clean and of adiquate size for two people.
The boot room would have been better if larger but was OK, perhaps a number coded lock on the doors would have improved security?
The ski hire shop being within the hotel saved the usual stampede for equipment at the start or the week and the staff were really helpful.

On the whole we had a fantastic holiday and hope that the hotel can sort out the sickness problems in order that we can re-book with confidence

Room Tip: Some rooms have balconies but ours did not, however we did have fantastic views over looking down to...

My husband and small son have recently stayed here and after a major accident on my husbands side, my son was left alone on the slopes, the hotel staff collected him, cared for him and enabled another family to help look after him until I was able to get a flight to him.
Whatever the food, comfort, cleanliness is rated it doesn't,t matter , they went above and beyond the call of duty and provided a safe haven in a very difficult time ...I would recommend this hotel to anyone, thank you Hotel Viking.

Just back from the Viking. Overall a great holiday.

Rooms were supposedly small according to reviews but we found them just fine. Not exactly huge and not much int he way of storage space but perfectly adequate, nicely decorated, very well cleaned and comfy.

Meals a bit hit and miss, overall OK. What you'd expect in a 3* really. Always something to eat, if you don't like the mains then you can just grab some more starter or dessert.

Our room was right above the restaurant and the music was very loud and grindingly irritating Europop remixes of songs that you wouldn't even want to listen to the original. It blared from lunch time until 6pm. Nobody liked it and I never saw any non-hotel guests being attracted in by it, so it's really a mystery why it was there. For the staff's enjoyment I guess, or to keep the place quieter (less work for them). Resting or relaxing in the room was impossible. A couple of times we asked them to turn it down or rather asked reception "what time does that horrendous noise end?" and they were actually quite accommodating and turned it down a bit. The up-side to the room location was that we could use the roof to chill drinks, and make ice cubes.

All staff were pleasant and happy.

Ski room is very small and cramped, no locks or anything like that, just some racks. There are stickers in reception to write your room number on your skis.

A few of our party felt ill and one went down with a very nasty illness. I don't see how it could have come from the food since all 10 of us ate similar things. There were signs about noro virus and hand gel dispensers but nobody seemed to use them. Most likely it came from another guest. We did see some kids going along the line of sauces at dinner, tasting each one and putting the spoon back. Did not have any sauces after that.

The views are fantastic but I'm not so sure about staying at the top of the hill. Sure you can be first on the pistes in the morning before the lifts open if you're an early riser, but at the end of the day you have to be careful of the closing times. Being stuck at the top is better than being stuck at the bottom. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

Overall a very good stay.

We stayed March 2012. Upon arrival the lift was out of use as a result of cleaning services on floors, this meant carrying heavy bags to the 3rd floor. The hotel is in an excellent location but staying in Morzine village is probably more suitable as it was fairly vibrant. If you want to stay late in the village, you can on a Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Be aware of the lift operator, he hates the English. One of those French people who seem to forget that we keep him employed by visiting the French Alps! He needed a good kick, the miserable [--].

The evening food is a mish mash of general random kids food, with no particular suitable meal to enjoy. Perhaps this is the standard of 3 star hotel food in the Aps, but we found it exceptionally poor. To make matters worse I became ill during the holiday and spent the remainder of the time on the toilet or in bed. I am convinced this was a result of eating food from the hotel. From having spoken to other guests people also complained of feeling ill with similar symptoms. My girlfriend became ill towards the end of the holiday as well. I went skiing some days but it was risky and I almost had a few accidents (not the skiing type if you know what I mean).

I also found many plates to have dirty greasy marks and glasses with lipstick! uhh, gross! Get a better pot wash (or washer!, sack him or her I don't mind, but not good enough).

On our last night we both spent the night awake (on the toilet being sick) and hoped reception would understand and provide us with late checkout (since our flight was Saturday evening). This was not the case and reception never acknowledged how ill we felt, only providing us an extra half our to check out! Not acceptable, how about offering another room (as some guests don’t arrive until the evening).

Although we found some members of staff to be very friendly, it seems to be run by students with no senior figure to oversee anything. I would not stay here again.

Crystal customers are supposed to get English TV, we didn’t and only found when we read it on this website! RUBBISH, we had to what bad French music videos, which are utter rubbish!!

LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES!

Thank you for taking the time to comment.
We know that during the winter such diseases are very common and are not necessarily the result of poor hygiene. We regret the inconvenience, and we put everything in place to verify our words.
Sincerely

We stayed the week of 25 Feb...We were also very apprehensive after reading the reviews....we feel it is incredibly unfair to criticize the hotel, after all its a reasonably priced hotel in a fantastic location, you could not have wished to be in a better spot....on the mountain.... literally! hence the slight down side to getting to the location, but unless you pay the earth for a helicopter how do you expect to get there, the staff were very helpful,we did not find this a chore at all, even with an unhelpful 11 year old son!

The food was of a very good standard for a 3* star hotel.... choice of 3 main courses along side a huge salad buffet with wonderful fresh cheeses & crusty bread.... also soup! if you could not find a meal each night your are incredibly awkward! our son Louis who is an awfully fussy eater found plenty on offer each night. Previous reviews commented on breakfast...yes the cooked option was bacon & scrambled eggs each day, however along side various other choices! boiled eggs, toast, croissants, yoghurt, fresh fruit salad, cakes,cheeses... again some people really must like to complain! The voucher for lunch we also enjoyed, because the hotel is on the slopes its no big deal to ski back for lunch, if you didn't want "dish of the day" there were 2 pasta dishes on offer....chicken & chips for children, was also good....real chicken breast....not like the rubbish we get in uk... We were lucky enough to be in the hotel during French half term, which meant the hotel had a band each afternoon on the terrace....this band were great & really entertained us...during evening too in the bar!

Our room was on the 2nd floor we had no problems with hot water, noise or standard of cleanliness....our towels were changed each day, beds were made each day & changed mid week, we had no complaints about the room, they are not huge rooms but also not small, we do not go away to stay in the room.

In 12 years of skiing we have not wanted to return to the same hotel however this next holiday we are, this really does speak for itself... this was one of our best value holidays. All the staff were helpful & attentive....lets hope Gabys still there when we return in February 2013.. great holiday..fantastic atmosphere enjoyed by myself, husband & son .

Room Tip: room over the front of the hotel....

As beginners we found the hotel excellent for convenience to the slopes. Ski and Boot Hire in good condition and found on site. The food was excellent, although there was a stomach bug among the guests, but wonder whether this is the chemicals in the water. Although it was disappointing to loose a day of the holiday due to sickness, we would return if the problem is resolved. Rooms were clean and adequate and the staff were excellent. A range of ski and board lessons for all abilities were on offer and the instructors good.

Room Tip: We were on the second floor and had no disturbances

Stayed at Le Viking last week and had the best holiday ever, the only bad thing about our holiday was that it went too quickly!

Met at Geneva airport by Crystal staff, we booked the all inclusive package. Crystal staff were excellent, very helpful, organised and efficient.
So once we arrived in Morzine we knew it was going to be a small struggle to get our bags gear and ourselves up to the hotel along with everyone else. You have to walk to the pleney lift which is about 2 mins walk, then up a few steps and into the lift an up to the hotel. Your bags are taken via skidoo to the hotel and you walk the short walk.
Check in was quick and staff were really nice.
As part of the Crystal package you get 35 euro's per person per week for drinks, however you have to give credit card details incase you go over this. You can keep an eye on your tab by asking reception what you've spent. We didn't spend our full allowance as we drank water with our meals mainly.
The main reason we booked this hotel was for the location and it did not disappoint! The views from the rooms are amazing. It is ski in ski out and thats what we wanted. The location of this hotel is perfect!
The staff at the hotel are all fantastic! A few people on here moaned about service not being quick enough? The service is excellent, and the staff are friendly and very efficient. When I am on a restricted lunch break my main concern is how quickly I can be served, when I'm on holiday that does not matter, I'd much rather be served with a smile and a little conversation.
All the staff at the hotel helped me with my French which was a bonus! They were very patient and really helped me improve with my ability to speak more French, so thank you so much for that!
The guy in the rental shop is very helpful, he got my mates board serviced over night as it had a few dings in it and he had it back for him first thing the next day so we could go out the next day. He is also very knowledgeable regarding the area so we would often run our daily plans past him for any recommendations!
The Crystal reps were fantastic also, they were always around and are very approachable and helpful.
The food at Le Viking is really good plenty of food and plenty of options. Myself and my partner are vegetarian and there was always an option for us, however just not much of an option at lunch. For example we had 'salad vegetarian' everyday for lunch whilst our friends had three different meat options. But we are used to that anyway so it really wasn't a problem. Dinner was always good though, plenty of options for us vegetarians at dinner and the cheese board is amazing.
We were so lucky last week the weather was absolutely beautiful, clear blue sky every day. We all came home with a sun tan.
The hotel had a guest band playing for a couple of days on the terrace, they were awesome. It was so nice after a day of boarding to chill with a beer in the sun on the terrace listening to the band.
This was the best holiday I have ever had! Just a shame it went so fast :( can't wait to go back to Morzine and Le Viking!
