We had booked three rooms for six persons for the Thursday night prior to the weekend of the All Blacks Rugby World Cup match vs Italy. The intention being as the hotel was close to the airport we would have a relaxing trip to the hotel close by the airport and then stay on at a more central hotel for the balance of our stay.
On arrival at the hotel the reception staff told our group no rooms were available. After extensive discussion in our poor French and their bad English it was established that one room was available but my girlfriend, our friend and I and would have to travel to Bonsai Hotel Martigues branch (a €60 cab fare from Bonsai Vitrolles) in order to get a room. This is what we ended up doing. The taxi fare cost more than the booking for the room.
My friends who managed to get a room were horrified at the filthy nature of the rooms, the lack of security and the apparent operation of a illegal business out of the room next door with large numbers of persons going to and from such room all night. Another group who arrived at the same time as us at the Bonsai Vitrolles had to stay in a room with all the windows smashed out.
Our room at Bonsai Martigues was basic, filthy and reeked of cigarettes.
I would never ever consider dealing the Bonsai hotel chain ever again and this experience set a very bad tone for the start of our holiday.
