This house is absoluely beautiful. Emma and Philip are perfect hosts. As soon as you drive through the gates, there is a sense of calm, and the house does not disappoint at all. There is nothing to fault here, everything from the colour schemes to the furniture, the location to the hosts, it makes for an absolutely relaxing & chilled out stay. We would have no hesitation in recommending this house and would certainly return ourselves. Having travelled on our motorbike to this location, and with limited luggage space, Emma ensured that we were well equipped for our days on the beach, supplying us with a 'beach pack' which included towels, a parasol and a bag to carry everything in. Excellent choice of restaurants and several lovely beaches all within a short walk from the house. There really is something for everyone here. Superb and thanks so much to Emma and Philip for making our stay so enjoyable.

Ma Maison is a really lovely chambre d'hote. It is very confortable, lovely decor, we particularly liked the New England style with the creams, whites and taupes used, it is very restful. St Palais is a pretty french resort, with mostly french families or couples on holiday. The Chambre D'Hote is a max 5 mins from shops and bars and restaurants, and we'd recommend Nausicaa and Chez Bob down at the beach for people watching and atmosphere.
The Ma Maison De Mer website actually gives an exact look and feel of what the place is like, so you know exactly what you're getting.

  • Liked — Decor, style and comfort, aswell as the great location
  • Disliked — Sometimes late at night, you could vaguely hear a drumbeat from a nightclub far away

A two day stay at this excellent B&B in St Palais de Mer ( just along the coast from Royan) was the most enjoyable of a recent trip to western France.

I'll start off with what it isn't - Ma Maison de Mer is not a full service hotel. So, don't go there expecting TV's in the rooms, a regular restaurant and so on. What you will get is a nicely themed , well decorated and very comfortable public rooms and bedrooms. The nicely thought -through "seaside" or "New England" decor extends throughout the property and its clear that the hosts have really thought about the impression they want to create.

Overall its easy to consider this alongside the luxury B&B accommodation you find in many parts of the USA, and as there it's the people that make a difference. Travelling solo on this occasion it was good to get an enthusiastic welcome and to be looked after by people who were still around when I returned at night to bring you a beer or glass of wine and a chat. Their enthusiasm for the area is obvious, and there's lots of maps and literature around.

The centre of St Palais with shops, restaurants etc is no more than a five minute walk. A few minutes drive will get you to a whole lot more . You can walk easily to a lovely beach, and the range of things to see within a short drive is extensive. I hope to visit this part of France again, and if so I won't be looking for anywhere else to stay.

This is the best holiday we have ever had, fantastic people, fantastic food and a fantastic setting. the hotel is very clean, your room is cleaned daily and beautifully decorated. The owners are excellent at providing to your every need.We had a very cheap evening meal each night with the wine included, excellent cook. apparently Emma had her own restaurant in Harrogate which I had eaten at!! this explains why the food and company is so good, I will recomend this hotel to all my friends and i am back next year carnt wait.

We thought that the B&B was in a great location , being a short stroll to the beach and town centre. We also like the hostess, Emma, who was always smiley and helpful. However, we think that a few changes need to be instituted so as to make this a place which offered much better value for money.

The evening meal we were served, although tasty, was woefully below expecations and needs. For €29, including wine, this represented bad value for money, particularly when measured against the good quality/variety/volume for most 'prix fixe' menus in France.

In terms of other things, the decor is already looking below par. Only 4 years after opening, there is badly peeling paint on shutters, broken soap tray in the shower and rusty/rickety patio furniture on the balcony of the room we stayed in. This shouldn't be like this for a place of this price.
