“What a transformation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

A while since we've been here, but having heard it had been taken over we booked for dinner. The change inside is awesome, completely unrecognisable. We loved the decor; classy but very tasteful and understated. We were amazed at how busy it was on a Tuesday evening given that it is well off the beaten track. This can only be because the word has spread. The service was excellent with very friendly staff indeed. Afraid I'm going to mark the food down to four stars, only because they lost our ticket and our food was delayed for a while. The food was very good but didn't quite deserve five stars, possibly it was a bit rushed as a result? However, not for one second would I be put off returning, this place has been transformed into an excellent Gastropub and is well worth searching out if you are in the area. Also, a huge garden with a stream running through it, a great place to be on a sunny day in Dorset. Top marks to the new incumbents.

Thanks for taking the time to review your experience with us. I also appreciate your understanding in our mishap (the docket actually fell from the grab rail unnoticed), but thankfully we did recognise the situation after you had been waiting for 20 minutes or so. And yes of course, your meals were put together with a little more haste than normal. We look forward to welcoming you back - not dropping your docket - and hopefully receiving your five star feedback.
Kind regards

This place looked like a good venue for Sunday supper so we called in at about 3pm to see if we had to book. The pub was buzzing and a very professional duo were performing. What a great way to keep a pub going during a dead time of day! In the event this would have been a bit noisy for a quiet meal, so we were relieved to return to a quieter atmosphere during the evening. We even had a reserved table, although I had only casually told the barman that we would be back later. Service was excellent and the food was well prepared and delicious. First rate pork tenderloin and Thai green curry followed by Dorset cheeses! Thoroughly recommended!

We have come down to this part of Dorset every year, often two or three times a year, for more than 20 years, so we know the area and its pubs and restaurants well. We have seen good pubs and restaurants come and, more often sadly, go. One we had always avoided was The King's Arms at Portesham, until the last 18 months. NOW WE GO NOWHERE ELSE when we are in the area!

Since Jo, Lee and the inimitable Claude have been there, it has changed beyond all recognition!
It is now the best pub and eatery in the area by far! We always try and eat supper there at least twice during our stays and also drop in for a lunchtime drink in the garden sometimes in the fine weather months as well, perhaps having a pizza in the garden from the outside oven.

The welcome we receive is always amazingly warm; the atmosphere is great and the food and service are second to none.

The monthly Supper Club evenings are not to be missed if you are around; the food is fantastic and the value amazing. BELIEVE ME AND DO NOT MISS IT!

The fact that local people also frequent the Kings Arms is a recommendation in itself. This is not a second rate 'couldn't care less' tourist pub, but a wonderful venue for LOCALS and VISITORS alike.

Lee, Jo and Claude deserve nothing but success in their venture. They work hard, they are welcoming, caring, serve great food that is also good value, innovative and are just completely dedicated to their customers.

LONG MAY THEY CONTINUE AND DO WELL! THEY DESERVE IT. WE LOOK FORWARD TO VISITING MANY, MANY MORE TIMES.

Thank you for the kind words. Always great to receive such positive feedback from customers who dine with us on a regular basis, and to know you come to us exclusively is fantastic. Obviously Lee, Claude and myself are the more 'known' faces, but the results we produce are of course down to a much bigger team who all give their best efforts in delivering our standards on a consistent basis. We look forward to seeing you next time you are in Dorset.
Kind regards

The Kings Arms has improved vastly since is was taken over by Lee and Jo - always a friendly welcome, great food, a good selection of beers and apart from these, a real effort is being made to get people to see the point of going there - live music on Sunday afternoons, Ukulele evening on Mondays, a monthly quiz and themed evenings, and real log fires!

Thanks for the review, and great to receive acknowledgement from one of our 'locals' who is now enjoying using the pub on a regular basis, where never did before. And to enjoy the whole mix of what our business model is; from food to live music to more community based activities.
Thanks Tim

We are new to the area and currently exploring the local pubs and restaurants. Having looked on the internet the Kings Arms looked like our sort of place with our sort of food, so we booked for lunch on Sunday and it didn't disappoint. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, the food was excellent, the bar area was warm and welcoming with open log fires and without doubt we will be returning for more of the same. Thanks very much for having us, and we'll see you soon.

Wow! How this pub has changed. Had a great family lunch for a birthday celebration. Food was delicious, staff attentive, atmosphere warm and cosy. A really great afternoon with live music that the kids loved to dance to. Would highly recommend. About time this pub had the the attention it deserves after years of neglect. We will most definitely be back.

We were visiting family in the area, staying locally and decided to pop in here on a midweek lunchtime for a meal. We were greeted warmly in this delightfully cosy, dog friendly pub with real fires on the go. The present owners have been here for just over a year and have clearly turned the pub into a place that you would want to visit over and over again. I cannot fault the food - beautifully cooked and presented and served by a very pleasant front of house chap who you can tell both enjoys his job and interaction with the public - very rarely seen in the sometimes uncaring world of the catering trade these days. Overall, we really enjoyed our entire experience of the Kings Arms and look forward to visiting again.
