“a fabulous stay at non such bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

what an idyllic spot to relax in. Accommodation was first class - 2 great pools as well as beach. Did not partake of sailing but seemed to be a good variety of options, Restaurant is really first class but villas also offer self catering so great to be able to eat out or in, Staff very friendly. You do need a car as good to get out and explore beautiful island, beaches and restaurants as well as getting to supermarket. Vernon was great- you need a 4x4 as road rather rough in places. Will return! Harmony hall next door a good option for food but Catherine s in English Harbour also gets a heasd up

Leaving a cold and miserable UK for a little sun and relaxation was the top of our list when choosing a destination and Nonsuch Bay proved to be the perfect choice.
We were fortunate enough to have prior knowledge of the isolated location so had shopped on our way from the airport, providing enough supplies for the odd breakfast / supper, and for our drinks on the blacony, if we did not wish to venture further. As luck would have it the apartment we had was in the best position, overlooking the beach and sea, one of the pools, and over the bay to the main buiding which houses the bar and restaurant. The apartment was superb, well fitted with one of the best beds I have slept in,rooms are light, large and airy with a huge balcony. We are walkers and found the hill over to the other side of the development which houses the larger villas, challenging. There is nothing on that side so we would have been disappointed had we been placed there.
Although we ventured out for lunches and to explore the island, it being our first visit to Antiqua, we did use the bar / restaurant several times - the staff were fabulous and the food adequate
We are not sailors but the added benefit of these facilities cannot be underestimated as they provide much fun for young and old, and it's a great spectator sport!
The two main swimming pools, with comfortable loungers and plenty of parasols, are enough for the size of the resort - the water refreshing but not cold.
We'll be in Barbados in May but how I wish it were another trip to Antiqua.

Room Tip: Unless you are a very large group stay in the main bay. There are plans to improve the 'other si...

Overall we had a good time, but there were a few things that had we known before booking would have chosen another resort.....

We booked a 3 bed apt with plunge pool, only because the rest of the resort was full, and my partner wanted a holiday that had sailing available.

To our surprise we were put back in the taxi that collected us from the airport and taken out of the main resort over the very steep hill to the other side of the bay where there are a number of 'town houses'. The houses are very well equipped etc, all you could want but we rattled around in it as it was very large and un necessary for two people. The plunge pool was off the bedroom on the ground floor and was freezing, only getting about 1-2 hours of sun each day.

We didn't have a hire car so had to call the main desk for someone to pick us up and take us to breakfast, and the beach so felt we had to pack a bag for the day. Then after a day on the beach we would have to get a lift back to the house then book another ride for supper in the evening....
All in all was a bit of a pain, although we were very rarely kept waiting. Modes of transport varied from the mini bus, to the gardeners pick up truck, to the security guards car..... In the end became a bit of a guessing game as to what would be sent and what member of staff it would be......

We were on a half board basis, so included breakfast and dinner. The restaurant staff were excellent, service most days was very good considering there were two large parties at the resort...
However, we did get a bit fed up of the evening menu, but the chef was happy for us to choose from the lighter lunch menu which helped so can't complain.

My partner has been a sailing man since a kid so was delighted to try the RS Elites, but was just as happy to mess about on the Q'ba's and cats. The sailing staff were excellent. However the sailing is not included in the price. $45 per day per person.....not mentioned until I had confirmed the booking....

Tips
double check the location of your accommodation.
If you want provisions advise the hotel directly that you want your taxi driver to stop at the supermarket on the way from the airport to the resort. The cost direct to driver is $25 he will wait whilst you shop. Otherwise it will be $70 for a round trip to the supermarket.

To sum it up, we had a very good holiday, refreshed and relaxed, but if we had accommodation in the main resort we would have felt much happier, and would have given 5stars.

Nonsuch bay will be on our short list for next year....

Room Tip: Town houses good for large groups but not couples

We booked this holiday for my husband and I to develop our sailing experience and we were not disappointed. The resort is superb. Isolated but very little you need to move off site for with one of the best restaurants we have eaten at. The sailing school staff are highly experienced and instilled confidence in us immediately. The accomodation is of a high standard with comfy beds and pillows and well equipped although with the quality of the restaurant we barely cooked! Book half board as great value!

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the restaurant especially if you are not good on hills!

My wife and I spent a glorious week at Nonsuch Bay Resort. Our suite was quite large with a well equipped kitchen, full stove, large frig and dishwasher. We had a laundry which we never used. The rooms in the middle section had a partial view of the ocean from the large porch.

The water front team was fantastic. Even though I didn't need instruction they were glad to crew on several of the boats so I could run the spinnaker and hike on the hobi cats when the wind was strong.

My wife was unhappy with the pools which were very cold.

Unless you want to sit the whole time I strongly suggest a car rental. The cost of the car was not too much more that the cost of several cab rides.

We had only two evening meals in the resort choosing to have lunch out several days and prepare our own food in the suite. Service in the restaurant was fine but we were decidedly disappointed with the food. A fantastic mussel dish was ruined by too much salt. A snapper dish was ok but not exciting. One evening we had the wahoo which was terrible.

All and all we had a wonderful time at the resort and would recommend it with reservations about the swimming pools.

We have just returned from a fantastic 10 day break at Nonsuch. My husband and I travelled with our 3 year old daughter. The staff are wonderful, and they can’t do enough for you. They contacted us to arrange our taxi pick up prior to us leaving the UK, and were very helpful when we had to change our booking due to the snow in the UK.

The first evening we dined in the restaurant, the food was great (the chef made me a vegetarian dish which was not on the menu). The following day my husband did a $70 round trip with a driver from Vernon’s (car hire/taxi arranged through Nonsuch, they are great). The Epicurian supermarket in St John’s had everything we needed, and due to the helpful Trip advisor reviews, we planned our shopping trip so thoroughly, we did not need to go back.

The apartments are fantastic; we had an big open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room, which was a great family space. The kitchen was well equipped kitchen, with cooker, microwave, dishwasher etc. And there is a utility room with a washing machine. We had two big bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms, one with a bath, which was great for our 3 year old (many of the other apartments we looked at did not have a bath). The apartment also had WIFI, and numerous US cable channels.

There are 3 pools, which are all about 1.5m deep (no children’s pool). It turned out we didn’t need a children’s pool as the beach is excellent, and so calm, that my 3 year old played in the sea as though it were a pool. Previous reviews mentioned seaweed, but the staff clear this in the mornings, and it did not affect us in the slightest. Every day we borrowed beach toys from Natasha at the kids club, which saved us buying lots of things and then trying to get rid of them at the end of the holiday (why don’t all hotels do this!). I would mention that the beach is small but great for young children, we visited a couple of other beaches and although they were beautiful, the sea was calmest at Nonsuch. There are plenty of sun beds.

The hotel is secluded, and there is nothing much nearby. This suited us as we didn’t really want to do much other than relax by the beach, but for those who do want to go out and about be prepared to hire a car or taxi. The hotel does offer sailing, kite surfing, and a number of day trips.

My Wife and I only booked this break some ten days before departure.
We didn't do any research, just took pot luck: Boy did we do well!!
This holiday was just what we wanted a chance to rest and 'chill out' away from the horrible UK weather.
The hotel complex is rather isolated: It is a US$70 taxi into St Johns. There are 3 swimming pools and a secluded bay with beach. Ideal for a quiet restful holiday. Although there is a sailing and kite-surfing school if you feel energetic (I didn't)
The accommodation is superb: We had a suite of rooms comprising of a large living/dining-kitchen which was very well equipped (hob, microwave, dishwasher and large fridge) A large bedroom with enormous four-poster bed (very comfortable), a large bathroom with his & hers washbasins and a large walk-in wardrobe. There was also a utility room with washer-dryer. There was daily domestic service and everything was kept spotlessly clean.
The main asset of this wonderful resort, however, is the staff: From the gardeners all the way up to the Manager they are universally wonderful. They are so kind and helpful.
The restaurant is top notch: Chef Michell
Husbands (Carribean chef of the year 2011) and his team produce dishes that are perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Food that would not be out of place in a Michelin-starred establishment.
We plan to return.
