I recently returned from a stay at this property located a few miles outside of Cambridge just a few yards from the M11 Freeway. I was traveling with my family (4 of us) and my brother's family (also 4) and we booked two suites in the new wing. The suites in the new wing are well-appointed and well-maintained with pleasant furnishings. Beyond that there is nothing positive about this property. Opening the windows results in the continuous roar of traffic detracting enormously from the spacious grounds of the property. Read all the fine print carefully. Having read other TripAdvisor review I was ready for a last minute room switch or worse not having a room. With that in mind, I had been careful to specify the kind of room we wanted, the length of our stay (3 nights) and the fact that my family was prepared to pay the $90 extra per night for the luxury of having the electricity turned on in the kitchen of our suite. My brother opted not to pay the $90 extra per night and had the kitchen but without electricity or utensils. The morning after our second night, the housekeeping staff asked what time we were leaving. We made it clear that we still had one more night. A few minutes later the owner, Roger, was at our door saying the booking was for 2 nights only. I had made the initial inquiry and had clearly specified - twice – in an email that the booking was for 3 nights – November 22-24. In hindsight I realize now that there is room for misunderstanding as the dates alone – without the three nights being spelt out numerically - which they were in the heading of the email and in the body of the email – could be interpreted as a 2 night booking. However, the reply confirmed the availability and made no reference to the fact that they could only accommodate us for 2 nights – not the 3 nights CLEARLY requested. Therein lay the misunderstanding which was unfortunate. What was not understandable to any of us was the reaction of the owner who is clearly in the wrong profession. He possesses no customer service skills and was positively rude denying I had ever requested 3 nights. I went online, retrieved my email clearly requesting the 3 nights. At this point he stated with great reluctance that we could keep 1 room and the 8 of us could sleep there. No apology whatsoever, no recognition that there was a misunderstanding, just the request for an additional charge of $55 to have the 8 of us in one room. He refused to budge, refused to accept any responsibility and stated he wished we would just all leave. Had it not been our final night and my brother's birthday, we would have, but since we planned to be out all day, we decided not to and enjoyed camping out in the suite with the two additional cots he provided – one of which was broken and collapsed immediately. We did our best to ignore Roger’s strange demeanor and incompetence. Advice – nice rooms and that is about it. Avoid it at all costs If you can. And by the way –despite its name Rectory Farm - Bed and Breakfast– it does not include breakfast – that is an additional fee – not insubstantial and, from what we gathered from other guests, very mediocre.
