“Simply Amazing.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

No words to describe the feel of Hotel Luna Azul. The accommodations are lovely-- so clean, tranquil and comfortable, and the restaurant and pool are PERFECT! I will always remember Rolf who was an incredibly conscientious host. I was pinching myself in disbelief when he sat with my 11-year-old to help her with her Spanish homework. This is surely a place like no other.

Throughout our recent trip to Costa Rica, our party of ten consistently recounted our memories and experiences at the Hotel Luna Azul as a major highlight. We loved the accommodations, as the owners were able to maintain a feeling of natural tranquility and local charm while providing a good level of comfort. We did not opt for the additional A/C and did get a little hot by the end of the day, but we loved waking up with fresh air. I was able to do some exercises in the morning on our private balcony, and a group of howler monkeys decided to visit the trees right adjacent to two of the rooms, so that was very exciting to witness! We visited 3 beaches from our visit--Playa Nosara, where we enjoyed surfing for the first time, Playa Ostional--a black sand beach--where we unfortunately did not get to see turtles due to the full moon and dry season combination, and Playa San Juanillo, a cove-like beach area where we enjoyed an amazing boat ride, and you have to ask for Captain Mike by asking locals where to find him. I want to mention the astounding quality and service we experienced. We were really blown away. I especially loved the avocado and shrimp salad, the mango and avocado salad, and the fresh local fish. The kids loved the breakfasts and, in particular, the fresh fruit and homemade jam make with 6 local fruits. It was a lovely stay that will have a lasting impression on our family, and it is the one place that I'd really love to return to someday soon!

This was our first time to Costa Rica and we will be back to Hotel Luna Azul to visit Rolf, Andreas, Fino along with the rest of the pleasant smiling Luna Azul staff. We actually read the reviews on trip advisor and booked it from reading them alone, you have to go, then you get what guest are talking about, it is just beautiful and peaceful and just what we wanted peace and quiet with relaxation. . Now our stay was for two weeks - and it was just lovely and full of fantastic adventures recommended by Rolf and Andreas. We had one day where we didn't go out on a venture where we enjoyed the beautiful pool, view, birds, monkeys and the peace and quiet along with a good book. We had so many outstanding day trips thanks to the suggestions of Rolf and Andreas - we went on a Tom Car Monkey tour - what a trip through the jungel, river beds, the birds, the monekys and just the good old adventure of it all was a lot of fun and a great company that runs the tours; the bird watching tour was oh so interesting and neat would do that again; the swiming with a turtle was also a first for us and having dolphins play along side the boat - we actually did this one twice it was so lovely being out on the water; the ziplining well was fun, except i was nervous but i survived it and said it was fun once it was over; our numerous day trips to different spots were all just great; The team just recommended and arranged such great adventures for us - it was just a fantastic trip you could do as little or as much (we did the much) as you wanted. We wouldn't have changed one thing that we did on the trip. Also i have to say the breakfast every day was great with a lovely bowl of fruit, yogurt, granola, eggs, rice, bacon or ham - it keps us going all day and the coffee they serve is lovely - make sure you go to the grocery store and bring some home, better then getting it at the airport! Rey and Britt both a lovely brew. Our dinners we lovely as well - and if you ask in advance they will make your favorite - okay i had the curried shrimp about five times,. We have fantastic photos of the howler monkey's that we saw almost daily sometimes from a distance but they were around and you could hear them, cool sounds the hole time with great brids - just writing this review while i'm back at work and thinking mmmmm when can we get back to our little home away from home. Thanks again Hotel Luna Azul for a great trip!

Room Tip: All of the rooms would be lovely - there are two rooms that face the pacific ocean we had one of tho...

I meant to write a review since my trip last March and finally get around to it. Rolf and Andreas are great hosts and own a gem in a special place. If you want lots of action, not your place, but if you want to relax and listen to the monkeys howl, stay here. Breakfast and dinner are also great and the kids loved Momo! We hope to be back some day...

At the end of a 3 week trip to Costa Rica we spent 5 nights in the tastefully appointed Parrot room.
Excellent standards prevail at the Luna Azul, from the design, furnishings, cleanliness and food through to the quality of service from the genial hosts Rolf and Andreas, ably assisted by resident professional tail wagger Fino. All other staff were equally professional. We appreciated the attention to detail, for example, the pretty dinner table arrangement on the evening of my birthday.
Rolf and Andreas gave us good advice regarding local activities, eateries and ammenities plus the use of reference books, useful for amateur wildlife spotters like us.
We don't like to be 'fussed around'; the level of service at the Luna Azul was ideal: attentive and friendly in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.
We have no hesitation in recommending this classy little hotel where, from the moment of arrival you are made tio feel welcome and can unwind in a stunning environment.

We wanted to check out the Nosara area and booked the Luna Azul for 3 Nights. We liked the concept of this small boutique hotel with it`s lovely garden, relaxed atmosphere, clean rooms (with water pressured showers :-) ) and the personal touch of the owners. They made our stay even more relaxed and gave us some useful suggestions for tours. The restaurant was also good and so we extended our stay to one week. We absolutely recommend the Luna Azul !

Beautiful place, friendly staff, immaculately clean. Not great value, though. For what we paid, we were expecting much more. The roads are very rough and you need to drive at least 30 minutes to get to any beach or area of interest. If you are interested in relaxing by the pool or on your deck, you will enjoy the experience, but if you are interested in seeing the region, you may find it disappointing. We found the breakfast overly simple and they were the same each of the three days we were there. Also, we were disappointed that no Costa Rican food was made available on the menu, for those of us who were interested in sampling the local cuisine and experiencing the local culture. Lastly, we felt that more information should have been provided on things to do in the area (ie: an area where informational pamphlets are provided.)

Dear guest,
Thank you very much for your visit at our hotel and your review. 151 of 159 reviewers so far gave us a 5 star „excellent“ rating. You also found our hotel beautiful, your personal expectations were not met though. Why ? Roads : The roads are indeed very rough, you are right. The main pacific coastal road (Samara – Nosara – Tamarindo) which leads to our hotel is a national highway and nobody knows when the government will spend the money to fix it again. Driving is part of the costarican adventure experience, here like in many other parts of our beautiful country. Beaches : The drive from the Hotel to Ostional Beach (the turtle refuge) is less than a mile, to the next excellent swimming and snorkeling beach it`s 2 miles. The next bigger tourist town (a place which you might call an « area of interest ») is 6 miles away. That`s exactly why so many visitors are coming to the Luna Azul Hotel : it`s away from any busy tourist town, a beautiful quiet place to relax, enjoy the surrounding nature and pristine beaches. More information : All our guests who are making their reservation directly with us, are getting an overview of the tours and activities in our area together with the confirmation of the reservation. Guests having made their reservation through a booking site (like you), normally get these informations verbally upon check-in at the hotel. I apologize if this wasn`t the case with you, and obviously we were also too busy to give you these informations during dinner time. We are always personally present in the hotel to answer any question guests might have, but I don`t remember you having asked anything in this respect.
Food : Our restaurant gets many excellent reviews for the quality of the food we serve. You found breakfast to be simple. After having been served : coffee, tea or chocolate milk, orange juice, a plate of minimum 5 different fresh fruits, plain or flavoured yogurth, whole granola, homemade bread (always white and dark), homemade marmelade and eggs to choose from (scrambled, fried, omelette, soft boiled), together with bacon, ham , gallo pinto and optional cheese, avocado or tomato - I ask you : how should a « not simple » breakfast in your opinion look... ? You missed typical local food : our restaurant mainly serves international cuisine, but we also prepare typical costarican dishes like sopa negra, yuca, pico de gallo, frijol molido, picadillo de chayote and others, but due to the fact that our menu changes daily, they are not available all the time. You had dinner at our restaurant twice – sorry, that these two specific nights obviously did not include any typical local ingredients.
