Casual Elegance with personality and hospitality. A MUST DO while visiting the Santa Ynez Valley! Did I mention the duck?? A MUST!!

“Superb flavors, presentation and value”

We have eaten at the Ballard Inn three times since Budi Kazali, the chef/owner, took over the restaurant, and each time we have come away impressed and delighted by the experience.

The menu, which changes every two weeks or so, features a small but well-rounded selection of appetizers and entrees. Kazali, one of Ming Tsai's proteges, blends eastern and western flavors and influences with an amazing touch.

The flavors are complex and incredibly balanced, the presentation is beautiful, and some unusual ingredients crop up - when was the last time you had tapioca for dessert?

The two-page wine list is notable in its restraint - you won't see any $1,000 "bragging" bottles on the list; the local wineries (Sanford, Brander, Firestone, etc) are well represented, rounded out by bottles from further afield. There's also a good selection of wines by the glass. Save some room for dessert, and try a glass of the gorgeous Muscat de Beaume de Venise.

No specific menu recommendations as it changes so often, but we've had an amazing bouillabaise, gingery and spicy tuna carpaccio, tender and flavorful Australian lamb, rich tender duck breast.

When we're visiting the Santa Ynez region, the Ballard is now a permanent fixture on our "must eat at" list.
