“Out of this world!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2012

My husband and I stayed at El Colibri half way through our Brazil / Argentina trip. In all honesty we had not done much research in advance and had gone largely on the recommendation of our travel agent. We were so so pleasantly surprised by what we found when we arrived. Greeted by a selection of the staff on arrival, we were then taken on a tour of the Estancia by the manager - and found ourselves upgraded as the hotel was not full (being near the end of the season). So that was a good start! We were then served an exquisite light lunch (as it was 3pm) and then offered whatever activity we wanted to undertake. We opted for some horse riding and absolutely fell in love! I rode as a child but my husband is a novice but really loved it. Juan the Gaucho who rode with us was a lovely lovely guy and gave us lots of insight into the Gaucho lifestyle and horses and polo in general. After about two hours we returned to the estancia and enjoyed the Spa and gym - both of which were excellent / very well appointed. After showering we had a pre-dinner drink and enjoyed a very high quality three-course meal (every meal we ate at El Colibri was exceptional - we had not one single complaint) and some wonderful wine. We also met the owner and his family, who are wonderful, warm and welcoming people who focused on making us feel at home whenever we saw them. In fact on our last night they organised a wine tasting and traditional Argentinian barbeque for us to enjoy - this was a truly special and unique experience which I will never forget. We spent our days here riding, walking, cycling and relaxing (and there was a lot more we could have done had we wanted). When it was a little rainy the team organised for us to take some cookery classes with the chef - learning to make the local bread. The service was beyond exceptional, as was the food and the hospitality of the staff and family. It is not like being in a hotel but a very very luxurious version of home. We will definitely be returning and will never forget our stay here!

First impression was wow! Absolutely gorgeous hotel set in the surrounding of green pastures with trees and horses grazing in the background. Very special. The staff was superb. The manager and the waiters a joy. The food was at best times wonderful, at worst times OK. There was one night which was a barbecue and it was so lovely, the cook was using a beautiful outdoor grill and it was the best meat I have ever tasted!! The wine list is very good, but extremely over-priced. One night we had a wine tasting in their wine cellar which was superb, wonderful wines with plates of fruit, vegetables and cheeses.
There is an outdoor pool which is small-medium sized, more to sun-bathe by than swimming in but very lovely setting. The fitness centre is great, very good life fitness machines, air conditioned, overlooking the pastures. There are small wet and dry steam rooms which are nice to use when you're lazying around. There is also a jacuzzi but a bit undated, though a nice touch anyway. There is a massage room and I was told by other guests that they are great, though I didn't have one because they were quite pricy. They turn on the spa (it's very very small) amenities at 6pm, including filling the jacuzzi, but if you want to use it before then you just need to ask them to set it up and they'll be happy to. The rooms are quite old-fashioned and though very clean and nice, not exactly high luxury but very nice in a rustic kind of way. My husband and I went horse riding twice a day and it was fabulous-the hotel is surrounded by nature- we cantered through small rivers and you have plenty of room to gallop, canter or just go very slowly. I wasn't used to riding before this trip and I had my doubts but fell in love with it. Later on my husband and I went to other hotels in Argentina where they had horse riding and we were happy that the first place where we rode was El Collibri, because the horse riding people there were excellent, very patient (though not great English speakers.. if you want to ride and you absolutely must have an English speaker then you'll have a problem. My husband and I did just fine with our broken spanglish), and also the horses themselves were very calm and trained. The best place for horseback riding! The hotel was relaxing and quiet, breakfast was good (limited buffet with a-la-carte, nice eggs). All in all I would strongly recommend. Beautiful, serene, relaxing.

Room Tip: Since there was low occupancy when we were there we were upgraded to the suite, which was very big...

This is a property which offers the level of food, service, style and personal attention of an Aman Resort which I consider the gold standard for boutique properties throughout the world. The Kitchen is truly exceptional and very flexible regarding guest requests. The owners, Raul and Stephanie lend a personal touch to the experience and the staff, led by Juan, is dedicated to your every wish during your time at Colibri( e.g. a Gaucho and horses ready for a trail ride within 30 minutes of your request ). The activity list allows you to fill your day if you so desire, but the execptional solitude and calming influence of this property is what we enjoyed the most during our time at El Colibri.

I think it is significant that this is a place guests come back to again and again. Our family has stayed at El Colibri three times now (and plan to return again this year), and it's remarkable how many guests one meets at El Colibri who are on their second, third, fourth visit (we even met a family on their 6th visit). The property and its surroundings are serenely beautiful and there are many activities to enjoy: horse-riding along varied and lovely trails, nature walks, polo (take a lesson or watch the talented professionals play in gorgeous setting), peruse and berry pick or cut fresh flowers for your room in the extensive and well-kept garden, gather eggs, milk Margarita the cow, sheer the sheep, enjoy a massage, jacuzzi or sauna at the spa, head to the gym for a workout, or simply relax by the pool. The service is impeccable, and the friendly staff goes "above-and beyond" the expected to make sure guests are thoroughly cared for. The rooms are bright, spacious, and inviting (with lovely views, comfortable beds and sheets, cozy fireplace in each room), the food is fresh from the garden and exquisite, the horses are well-trained and cared for, the gauchos are engaging and knowledgeable, and the Fenestraz family are such warm and charming people who make their guests feel like part of the family. It's no wonder travelers keep coming back to El Colibri.

When we arrived the whole staff were standing outside to greet us. We were introduced to everyone then made our way inside to meet the owner, Stephanie who runs El Colibri with her husband, Raoul. Although the building is less than 10 years old,it has a refined, traditional design and feel which is appropriate for the region. Our room was standard but had plenty of space, in fact as large as some hotel suites. Doors opened from the room onto a terrace which was ideal for having a drink or watching the scenery and wildlife. The food was excellent...mostly organic and homemade. El Colibri is a working Estancia so many activities are available or you can simply sit around the pool and relax. My husband and I also took advantage of the amazing massages available there. Veronica is an amazing masseuse...lots of guests were raving about her. There is also Thai massage which was equally as good. Juan, the manager, ensured that everything was done to make our stay as stress-free as possible and Natalia, the sommelier was really the sweetest person, who only accepted a tip after major persuasion. El Colibri would be a great stop on a tour around Argentina , if only to meet the incomparable Stephanie.....an extraordinary, talented lady and wonderful hostess.

After a long journey and a very early start it was a real pleasure on our arrival at El Colibri to receive a delightful and unusual reception from the staff complete with two beautiful horses waiting to greet us.

This is a very beautiful and exclusive property.

The Fenestraz family extended a very warm welcome and we had a special opportunity of watching a practice polo session featuring their very charming young sons who are extremely talented riders. The polo horses were immaculate as were the horses available to guests for riding.

For us the highlight of our visit was indeed riding these wonderful animals under the superb guidance of Mauro (the Estate Manager ). Be aware that he speaks no English but his handling of the horses is totally reassuring.
( We had never ridden before and we would thoroughly recommend this activity to anyone.)

Juan the hotel manager seemed ever present and was anxious to ensure our stay was memorable. On the morning of our departure there was a violent storm and our transfer car did not arrive on time. Juan made himself immediately available (at 0400 hrs) to drive us himself. Our car did eventually arrive but Juans gesture had been very reassuring. He even texted later in the day to check we had caught our flight.

We would advise that guests should take a little time in advance in order to select which room is best suited to their requirements. The rooms are all delightful .

The food was enjoyable (especially the steak !) and much was produced on site though at times the service did feel slow.
There was a fault with the aircon which was not resolved while we were there.
Complimentary water in rooms would be nice gesture in such extreme heat.

We would have no hesitation in recommending El Colibri as a very unique and tranquil destination.
Indeed many of the guests there had stayed several times before.
In particular the charismatic and utterly charming Fenestraz family and their excellent team deserve credit for the outstanding hospitality and personal touch they provide.

My husband and I stayed at El Colibri for 4 nights. The owners, Raoul and Stephanie are warm and friendly. Juan, the manager, could not have been more helpful. My husband had a fantastic day of dove hunting, which was arranged by the hotel, while I relaxed at the the pool. Our only disappointment was that the mountain bikes were in disrepair and had not been maintained. You could not change chain rings or any gears easily for that matter. We had wanted to explore the many trails, but since we do not ride horses, we were unable to do so. Replacement cables and routine lubrication would keep the mountain bikes functional, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem mountain bike maintenance has come to Argentina. Our meals were very good and included vegetables and fruits from the garden. The pain au chocolat in the bread basket at breakfast was terrific. We really enjoyed the barbecue, especially the roast pig. Natalia, one of the waitresses, was especially nice. It was fun to meet the guests from other countries. El Colibri is very expensive but it is worth the splurge.
