“the owner, gary, exhibited zero tolerance towards young children-do not visit!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Gwern Borter self catering cottage which looked 'tired' and in need of 'cosmetic surgery'. Our stay was made stressful and miserable due to the owners intolerance towards our young grandchildren aged four, seven and eight. Due to the continuous harrassment caused by the owner we felt obligated to spend our
seven days stay entertaining our grandchildren in Llanduddno, Conwy and surrounding areas, at considerable expence, in order to defuse any potential encounters with GARY! We considered him to be an aggressive 'person' who enjoyed to fruits of his income and void of any social graces. Children were restricted to the 'courtyard' for play and not privy to his advertised 12 acres of 'beautiful grounds and gardens'.

I remember this family well they stand out in my memory as I am sure they will in all the other kids memories as it was at the request of other kids and parents that I had have a word to thier grandparents to stop the bullying to no avail the grandparents were never to be seen whilst these kids ran amock, In the end I had to ban them from using the bikes, far from spending time in the surrounding areas they spent most of their time onsite upsetting all the other kids

On arrival after a 7 hour drive we were pleasantly suprised to see the accomodation however, we then encountered Gary who was gruff and not very welcoming . We were not shown to our accomodation but just given the key and he was keen to get rid of us after exchanging cash for the weeks rental with no receipt. The sorrounding area is beautiful and well worth a trip to Rowen the nearest village. The village pub in rowen is very welcoming and the pie and sausages were delicious. We intended to go horse riding but was put off by the lack of hospitality.

The cottage although it did have all the facilities was not four star. The bed linen had a musty smell and the settees were worn and torn which also smelt. We tried to have a shower but couldnt due to constant fluctuating temperatures.

We had high expectations of staying on this farm in Wales and spending some time with our English cousins based on previous reviews. It was to be a highlight of our trip to Wales but fell short. We stayed in the self-catering cottages which were quite nice but we found the owner gruff and pretty off-putting. We felt like he really wanted nothing to do with those staying in self-catering even though we asked little of him. Our daughter was very excited to hear about the animals but they were not very friendly and she quickly became frightened of them. The area with the petting animals was so dirty it was off-putting. Yes we know it is a farm, but this small concrete area could have been kept cleaner. Although she was promised she could help feed the animals, the owner did not really let her do it and she was very disappointed. We also planned to do a horse ride but watching the owner interact with some other prospective riders in such a gruff manner was not encouraging and we never did. Our teen son wanted to watch some movies but was putt off from going to the main house to ask to check them out by the gruffness of the owner. When he finally did our television wouldn't work. Although this was fixed fairly promptly- in fact it was actually the only positive interaction with the owner - it did not make up for the bad. The farm has so much possibility but we would not return there based on our experience.

All the kids love feeding the chickens and ducks by hand, this guest 's child became scared of them?????? and as much as I try I can not potty trian my 15 chickens, 20 ducks and 6 guese. The area in which feeding time occurs is swept out every day still gets dirty, sorry about that.

First the only positive. The place is very conveniently located in Snowdonia but within minutes of main towns of Conwyn and Llandudno.

Unfortunately the owner, Gary, seems more intent on squeezing money from clients rather than providing a service. He is also rather gruff and unapproachable, to the point that you feel you are impinging on him by asking him any questions. The overbearing nature of the owner also means that most clients are hardly likely to complain about anything either,

His website says heating and hot water is included but it only comes on at the times that he has programmed it. There is nothing in the literature to tell you how to manage it yourself, and you're hardly likely to go and disturb him at a late hour to ask him to do it. Also the shower is a trickle, the mixer taps barely work and the hot water is so hot that you just cannot use it. I suspect this is so that people just use cold water and save the owner in utility bills.

We stayed for a week and my baby boy piddled on the bed as I changed his nappy. We tried washing the sheets ourself by putting 50p in the slot. We left for the day and returned to find that the washing cycle had not completed. When I went to complain to Gary his response was "It's only 50p, put another 50p in the slot". The least he could have done was to provide some clean linen but it just seemed to beyond the call of duty.

On his website it is made clear that kids bikes are free but when you get there the brochure in the cottages tells you that he expects a minimum of two pounds per child, which goes to a local charity. I have no problem donating to a charity if this is made clear up front but not when it's done sneakily like this. Also it's pretty cheeky of him to advertise the bikes for free when he expects you to pay for them at the end. Needless to say I didn't and let him know my feelings.

We stayed in Gamekeepers and were disappointed by the quality. It's definitely not 4-star as advertised. The carpets are old and dated, furniture is cheap and one of the double rooms doesn't even have a wardrobe. In retrospect, based on the other cottages I've seen in the area it is more in the 3-star range.

Although it is in a stunning location I would not recommend this to anyone simply on account of the awful service you receive. The owner doesn't know how to smile, let alone make you feel welcome and hospitable. On several occasions he also screamed at my 2 and 3-yr old boys for rattling the horse enclosure gate or playing with things they weren't supposed to.

We have a coin operated small laundry room with a washer and a dryer. Subsidised at 50p per wash. If you need more washing done you need to put in another 50p. Please read our brochure it is quite clear to all our guests before they arrive, kids bikes are supplied by LLandudno Round able we recommend a £2 per week as a minimum donation for a weeks use 28p per day, some guest give much more. This one moans about it. Bit sad really.

though the self catering cottage was nice enough the shower was just a drizzle and could only get either boiling hot water or cold from it.when i told gary, the owner, he said thats the way it is.we asked to pay in cash but couldnt get the money till later in the day by which time we were informed that he had already taken it off our credit card[without consulting us first.we have stayed in many self catering cottages but this is the first time that we have been charged[notified by e mail 2 weeks later] for cleaning even though we left it in a reasonable state

If cottages are left in a very bad condition then extra cleaning costs do apply out of 312 bookings last year this happened only twice and those 2 were really rough.

We've just got back from a wonderful week here. We had 3 of the cottages between us and they were ideal, all next to each other so we could spend time together, but still have our own space. They were on a courtyard where the 7 children in our party had endless fun whizzing round on the bikes and skateboards that are provided for them in return for a small charity donation. The children also enjoyed feeding the horses, goats, chickens and geese that are just behind the cottages. It is very safe for the children and they were able to play out and we were able to see them from our cottages. It is a very peaceful location.
The cottages are comfortable, very clean and well equipped, lots of cooking utensils, pans, oven dishes etc.
The location is beautiful, surrounded by hills and woods. Lots to do round and about.
Gary the owner was very helpful and both the children and some of the adults enjoyed horseriding with him.
We had a fantastic time, and have booked to go back next year!

The hotel is set among beautiful countryside on the hills above Conwy. It's a bit far away from Conwy itself - you couldn't walk in and a taxi would cost around £15 one way. However, the location is gorgeous, very quiet and there are a few walks around the countryside that the room brochure details.

The hotel is decorated to match it's manor house roots, and the rooms are very clean. We had a suite with double bedroom, bathroom with toilet, sink and shower over the bath and a separate small seating area. Magazines were provided for us to read, which was a nice touch, and we even had matches left in the room on the drinks tray so we could light the candles if we wanted!
Breakfast was good quality and there were a few options, although no continental breakfast.

All in all, a bit far away from civilization but if you don't mind that it's well worth it. Would definitely visit again.
