When we arrived at our hotel in Vinales we were all quite hungry having taken a slow ride from Havana. We were also a little disorientated by virtue of the dramatic change of scenery and pace 'everything was so much slower and incredibly relaxed'.
When we asked about 'good' local eateries, the 'Casa Sol Coral' was highly recommended to us as an alternative to eating at out hotel or in any of the more local restaurants. Therefore, having previously heard about the superb hospitality and fantastic home cooking that could be found in Cuba despite some of the very misleading and negatively biased views expressed in a few foreign guide books, we jumped at the chance to find out for ourselves.
The transport both to and from Casa Sol Coral was included in the quoted price and took the form of a private car driven both ways by our host.
I think between the four of us, we each chose something different from the entirely 'spoken' menu, one each of fish, chicken, lobster and pork for our main courses. Everything was superb, locally sourced, wonderfully presented and of the highest quality.
I am not entirely sure how many courses were laid before us but each was thoroughly enjoyed and really quite memorable. I'm not sure either how many cocktails we consumed between us but distinctly remember sharing a nice bottle of local wine which went down a treat.
We were served throughout by the delightful young daughter of our hosts and 'Fran' the man of the house was particularly attentive and always made sure we had enough of everything.
During a necessary interlude between one course and another, Fran was keen to show us his pride and joy which consisted of an attached 'self contained' flat which he intended to rent out to tourists in order to make a little extra cash.
All in all, the Pettitt family enjoyed a very reasonably priced and not to be missed combined 'dining and cultural' experience and each agreed that if ever the opportunity should permit, we would certainly stop over and visit Casa Sol Coral again. Highly recommended, many thanks, Neville Pettitt (England)
