“wonderful warm cosy cottage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

I rented Old Stones as a surprise for my boyrfiend's 30th birthday. The cottage is much bigger than appears in the pictures. It is very clean and beautifully decorated. An absolute must is cooking on the aga, or simply sitting by it with a book and appreciating the warmth. The kitchen itself is very well equipped with good quality utensils etc. Cathy adds a number of personal touches including a starter pack with moist lemon cake to write home about. The views of Curbar edge from the garden are magnificent and we made use of the very well equipped bbq area. We had a few car troubles at the beginning of our holiday and Cathy and her husband went well beyond the call of duty to make sure our holiday went smoothly- we cannot thank them enough for their kindness and generosity. The wifi was a great bonus and the location unrivaled.

“A well placed gem of a cottage.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

The cottage is comfortable inside and beautiful on the outside. One of it's most attractive features is the garden which has views of distant hills and is beautifully planted with a number of areas to relax. A bonus inside is the Aga which is both useful in terms of cooking but also gives a warm 'heart' to the kitchen.
The cottage was extremely well prepared for our visit, being cleaned to a high standard, good bed linen and fresh flowers throughout the house. The owners live close by and were very helpful if any assistance was required.

“A gem of a find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

This cottage turned out to be a really pleasant find. The 16th century cottage itself is a beautiful cottage which seemed to have everything you needed including all mod cons. e.g. dishwasher and wi fi. Although there is a very comfortable lounge we spent most of our time sitting around the large kitchen table enjoying the warmth and novelty of an Aga cooker which we had never experienced before. The secluded cottage garden with wonderful views across the valley to Curber edge has various seats dotted about it. It was a lovely tranquil place to sit and enjoy a morning cup of coffee.
Geographically Calver is centrally placed in the Peak district and it allowed us to cover most of it to sight see by road. The cottage has its own drive to park your vehicle which is ideal because you are in walking distance of the three pubs/restaurants cafe and Spar shop for any food items you may need later on. The owners had already included a welcome pack for us when we arrived which was most welcome.

“A truly enchanting cottage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

A gorgeous cottage with a stunning garden. Cathy has ensured that you have everything you could possibly need, including a little welcome package of scrumptious lemon cake, chocolate (which the children immediately noticed!), tea, milk, coffee & wine. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, the living areas are spacious and the cottage truly feels like a home away from home. The children loved exploring the garden with its many little pathways. There are games and toys for children in the lounge area. The location is stunning - lots of lovely walks in the area, close to a small Spar for any little essentials, and a pub/restuarant close by. We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone!

“An absolute gem you must discover”

Old Stones is quite simply a perfect place to stay when in Derbyshire. It seems to have everything you would need to make your holiday special. The cottage is equipped to an extremely high standard including providing plenty of towels, soap, washing -up liquid and essentials like tea bags, coffee, cake, chocolates and wine upon your arrival. The photos on the website are good but don't reflect the true charm of the cottage. The bedrooms are especially spacious and when staying here recently our little girl had the choice of three singles beds in her room! The kitchen is the heart of the cottage with an aga which is easy to use even if you haven't experienced an aga before. The garden however is absolutely stunning with fantastic views over Calver Edge. The BBQ and garden furniture were used several times during our short break away as we had superb weather all week. If however you are not so lucky with the weather, there is a tv with satellite channels, dvds provided, wifi access and plenty of reading material provided by Cathy and Mike Knight.
The cottage is extremely well situated for many of Derbyshire 's tourist attractions including Chatsworth House almost on the doorstep, Bakewell, Buxton, Matlock ('Gullivers' for children up to about 13 is fantastic) and of course the numerous walks from your doorstep. There are also so many great places to eat in the local area if you dont wan to cook in the cottage, Cathy has a great book with all the information you could need about pubs, restaurants etc. This is our second visit and it won't be our last.

“A delightful holiday cottage in an ideal location for visiting all the best that Deryshire offers.”

Old Stones Cottage is a well equiped holiday cottage offering a cosy, and comfortable environment. Cathy has ensured that all you need is to hand in the house with the lovely garden to enjoy when the weather behaves well. Excellent welcome gifts of wine, home made cake and chocolates together with Cathy's hen's eggs got us off to a great start.

We found the location at Calver great for walks from the house and centrally located to visit many must see places in Deryshire. Walk No 3 in the Calver village walk leaflet rises from the village to provide excellent views including those of the newly gilded wing of Chatsworth House and returns hugging the Dewent river bank. Good eating houses are found in the close vicinity including Cathy's recommendation of The Angel at Holmsfield. We would be happy to return to Old Stones Cottage on another visit to Derbyshire.

“A lovely cottage in a quiet location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

A lovely cottage much bigger than it looks on the website. Two huge bedrooms with plenty of drawer/wardrobe space. It has a great separate shower and bath which was perfect for our 3 year old and a bath mat was provided. Step stools were in the bathroom and upstairs toilet which helped him too.
The aga is great fun (a book to help you is provided!) We had never used one and managed to eat several nights successfully. It's constant warmth is a welcome in the chilly mornings and I can imagine is perfect in the Winter. Plenty of hot water and heating if it was required (which is was on some days, silly English weather!)
The garden is very pretty and spacious. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore and a big garden table and chairs are provided (and bbq but we didn't have the weather to use it) The views are beautiful and very relaxing.
Cathy very kindly provided a huge box of Duplo for our little one to play with for the week and a super welcome pack complete with scrummy lemon cake.
There were 4 adults and 1 child in our party and we all had the space to relax and enjoy ourselves or sit and watch the tv together in the evenings.
There is a small post office and a well stocked spa shop at the local petrol station all within walking distance of about 5 minutes plus a garden centre and a couple of cafes even nearer.
All in all a great time was had by all :o)

Liked best: The superking size bed!
Liked least: Not much sound proofing between the downstairs and upstairs but not a problem if you all get on! It is a 16th century building after all.
