The first time we ate in this restaurant pizzeria was about 15 years ago when holidaying in the Dordogne and were very happy to return there when we visited the Dordogne once more, as we had kept an excellent memory of their pizzas.
The restaurant is accessed from the street, a floor level above the river and has no real view over it.
There is though a small terrace with a few tables on the same upper level from where you can enjoy a marvelous view over the water and Montignac.
Most customers (including us!) like to eat on the elevated terrace that has been developed on the riverbank, as it is really pleasant on a warm summer evening!
The terrace is equipped with canopies, both against the sunshine, occasional rain or simply evening dropping temperature.
Each chair has its own blanket that is quite welcome even on a nice summer evening, as temperatures by the water tend to drop quite fast.
There is a mosquito lamp on each table as where there is water there are insects! They are very efficient though and are quite decorative.
The food is as good as we remembered, but the portions have become much smaller.
The restaurant’s specialty is pizzas with a very thin and crispy base and delicious fillings but there is a menu with a large choice of other dishes.
The restaurant is always fully booked - you have to book in advance as it is popular!
The downside of this is that despite the number of staff the service might sometimes be a little slower, and the staff is not always 100% attentive, especially the woman who owns it and also waits.
We remembered her as “average friendly” and a bit “distant” and we found that she still was.
Her staff is much better, but they all seem to be rushing from a table to another one and therefore have no time for dealing with the customers.
It comes across as a “factory”.
The prices are average +, we would expect to pay slightly less for a meal but I presume that the slightly inflated price comes from the fact that you are eating on the riverbank! There’s a price to pay!
The only reason for us to return was their pizzas and there was a slight disappointment there...
Not sure we will return if/when we are in the Dordogne next time, as we prefer to have a “more personal service”, but it is a very personal and subjective comment.
We all have different requirements, but we would say that Les Pilotis is overall good but slightly overrated.
