“If you are planning to walk the QCT - stay here, you'll be glad you did”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

If you are walking the Queen Charlotte Track, this is a great place to spend your first night. It's about 12 km from Ship's Cove and takes about 3.5 hour - it's incredibly muddy & slippery in November! We were greeted by Colleen and Peter on arrival and shown our lovely room. We had a large bedroom with an eating area and small kitchen, with a shower and toilet in the back. The kitchen is fully kitted out and we were brought delicious chocolate muffins on arrival, which were lovely with tea, after a warm shower. There is a seating area out front, with a view of the inlet. A delicious dinner was brought to our room at 6pm, as requested. Breakfast was in the fridge, so that we could eat and leave as soon as we were ready. Colleen and Peter were very friendly and had lots of great stories. Best accommodation on the track.

An enjoyable stay in paradise setting. While called a backpackers it could also be a bed and breakfast or homestay. The setting was lovely - a wonderful patio area and outside table and chairs on a balcony overlooking the inlet. We had the rooms to ourselves so were able to enjoy the rooms, lounge and kitchen. However, if there were a mix of groups it could be cramped - but worked great for our family group. The muffins on arrival were delicious and we enjoyed the use of the kayak. Only downside for us is that there were no kids prices for the meals or accommodation (and our daughter is a sparrow of a eater). AND turn the fridge off at night as it is really noisey.

Cnoc na Lear is listed as a backpacker retreat (most people arrive there after walking on the Queen Charlotte Track) but it could also be listed as bed and breakfast or guest house. The charges make it very good value. It is also accessed by water taxi from Picton. The hosts were welcoming, very friendly and informative, the food delicious and hearty, good facilities (could cook or have meals provided - including beer or wine). We felt very much at home with Colleen and Peter.
