“Snobby, poor service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2011

The food was OK, service was slow, overpriced. Would not recommend to anyone. Interior and view was great!

“Delighted to return to this very special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2011

Having stayed overnight last year for my birthday celebration, we were delighted when friends offered to take us there for their Ruby Wedding anniversary meal. The menu format has changed since we were last there but the quality and originality of the food remains superb. This is a place for fine dining - each dish is work of art, with tastes to tempt the palate and presentation to delight the eye; if you want a plate of food after a day on the fells, go to one of the many pubs in Keswick. You will come away from the Cottage in the Wood feeling you have had a really special evening out in terms of the friendly, professional service, the overall ambience and of course the food!

“Don't miss this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2011

Elegant and inventive menu, served by professionals who are comfortable in their expertise (and therefore make you feel comfortable too), in beautiful Lake District surroundings .......... what more could you want.

I'd agree with the reviewer who says that this is not for you if all you want is a simple refuelling stop involving heaped plates and masses of chips - - the courses are carefully and beautifully constructed. I found the portion sizes just right, which meant that I managed to make it to the plate of four local cheeses ( I rarely am able to do that)

Their use of local produce, and the creative use of wild ingredients (wood mushrooms, toasted acorn, wild purslane, daisies and so on) makes the experience one to remember.

And of course, if you stay overnight, then you get to take breakfast, while watching the wild birds feeding, to a backdrop of mountains.

Superb.

“elegant dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2011

If you need to collapse with a plate of sausage & chips after a hard day's hiking, this is not for you. But as a celebration at the end of a holiday, it would be hard to beat.
The food was fabulous, amazing flavours, superbly presented. Some surprising combinations that we really enjoyed. We liked the short menu - it reflected what ingredients were good that day, so we had complete confidence in ordering oysters!
The view from the dining room was stunning & front of house was very professional. Highly recommended.
