“Absolutely the best most peaceful place to relax!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

A wonderful place to relax and enjoy the fantastic delicious food and the best wine from the winery. The staff are all very helpful, organised, friendly and services are first class. Nothing is too much for them if you need help.

The is a lot of interesting history about the Hotel which was an Abbey. The Abbey is beautifully restored, the place is very quiet and peaceful surrounded by a winery. The rooms are very big, comfortable, well equipped and warm. The are lots facilities available and a gym but we did not managed to make use of it as we went sight seeing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, though it was short. We would love to go back for a longer break.

Room Tip: The rooms have a beautiful view of the winery and it is very quiet and peaceful. The three different...

They have done a tremendous job in renovating this old abbey of the 12th century and converting it into a 5-star hotel. Located just at the edge of the Ribera del Duero wine region this beautiful hotel combines old stone walls with modern state of the art luxury finishing.
Service is impeccable and very welcoming. A pity the spa was not yet finished when we were there (due in 2014). The restaurant is stylish and the food was good, but perhaps it has potential for further improvement.
We loved our stay and will go back soon.

Ok, you have to travel from Madrid for about 2 hrs by car to get there. But: It is worth it!! The atmosphere is great, the staff very, very nice and helpful and the food fantastic. We did some bike tours (bikes from the hotel), did the winery visit (very interesting) and besides that, just relaxed!!

Wonderful retreat with excellent service and food. I would go back to Spain in that area just to visit again. Will wait until the SPA is complete -- then it will be right up there with the wonderful exclusive hotels anywhere in the world.

Room Tip: They are all nice - depends on what you want to spend!

It is somewhat difficult to get to with limited airline service nearby (Madrid 2 1/2 hours) but Excellent service from the moment you arrive.

Facility is fantastic but not complete - SPA and Pools are not built and are really needed to bring the hotel to the level it purports to be operating.

Great location for tours of the Wine region and we even arranged for our group to enjoy a cooking experience with the chefs including selecting fresh produce from the on-site garden and preparation in the kitchen. Great fun!

We booked this converted Monastery as a long weekend treat. It is about two and a half hours drive North of Madrid. The roads can be confusing so take a SatNav with you!
When we arrived the staff were very welcoming with cold towels and a lovely drink,
We were show to one of the junior suites which was on the ground floor at the end of a corridor and in a lovely quiet position. The suite had everything you could ask for, even a bottle of their lovely wine and a fridge full of complimentary drinks.
We were rather disappointed with the restaurant in the evenings and at lunchtime which only serves very expensive Nouvelle Cuisine, the portions are tiny and there is nothing else on offer unless you want to eat in your room. It would have been nice to have the option of a less formal restaurant and they certainly have enough space to include one.
The breakfasts were lovely however and you could have virtually whatever you wanted.
Although they sell their wine in a shop in the building, we found that buying it in the restaurant was more expensive which did not make sense to us. Surely if you are producing wine on the premises you should be able to offer it at a good price to your guests?
We arranged a tour of the vineyards and winery with one of the staff which was very informative and then spent £100 on wine to bring home - we then found that they had charged us £60 each for the tour!
There is a bar on the ground floor which is open to all but was mainly deserted probably because the drinks are very expensive £10 for a glass of prosecco or should I say half a glass! and £10 for a gin and tonic. There is then strangely another bar just for guests on the second floor which seems rather a waste of space and we did not use it. It is not staffed and you have to let reception know if you want to use it. We did not think that it would be that relaxing with a member of staff lurking until we left.
Beauty treatments are available but there is no spa and they are at present using spare guest rooms. We had a massage which was lovely however. I understand that they are converting one of the outbuildings in to a spa at a later date together with a pool which would be very welcome.
There is nowhere to sit and relax. There is a large cloister area packed with wooden tables and chairs near the restaurant and bar but breakfast is not served outside. There is a large terrace which is a sun trap outside the rooms on the ground floor but no furniture. When we enquired we were told it was on order (the hotel has been open a year). They should have moved some of the tables and chairs from the cloisters, but instead we were offered some chairs that appeared to come from somewhere like IKEA which were most uncomfortable.
They should provide a folder in the rooms of things to see and do however the reception staff were very helpful in printing out things from the internet for us.
The hotel was very quiet with few guests.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back would be quieter, wait until they have the Spa open and there is a pool and relaxa...

So I was a little skeptical given the dearth of English feedback on Trip Advisor for the hotel but we took the plunge anyway and are thrilled that we did. The hotel is spectacular - the renovation of the abbey was done very tastefully and in a way that maintains much of its original purpose and character. In fact, it is the desire to keep the original principles intact that cause me to mention the only downside of the hotel, that being that the rooms are small (but adequate) relative to the size of the common spaces. This was done intentionally to mimic the original monks quarters, although I am glad to say the room is much larger than those were, and of course far more luxuriously appointed. Despite the lack of English feedback so far let me assure you that the entire staff speak excellent English - no language issues whatsoever. A nice touch is that they bring you a English web printed newspaper at breakfast. Take a tour of the winery - well worth it and of course Abadia Retuerta wines, while technically not part of the Ribera appellation are as good as any of the wines we enioyed during our various winery visits. The original abbey is still present - the church, the sacristy, the cloisters. In fact, we ate lunch in the cloisters courtyard twice - it was really a gorgeous spot. Food is excellent. Portions are not huge, but not quite nouvelle cuisine either. The presentation and taste of everything we ate was first class. Staff were also very amenable to making us whatever we wanted for lunch since we don't like to eat a traditional Spanish style meal at lunch, so the chef made us delicious sandwiches one day and burgers the next. Dinners were delicious. The menu is small but there's enough to pick from. They also do a chef's menu every night (like a tasting menu) which you can customize by omitting a course or two. The service is classy and understated. Gym was very nice appointed with brand new equipment. They are building a spa and pool which will be ready in 2014. For now, the spa treatments take place in one of the 22 hotel rooms but you would think you were in a spa as it has been decorated beautifully. All in all a fabulous place to stay for a couple of days.
