“Looking forward to going back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2009

Beautifully located on Big Bear Lake. Staff was wonderful and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook and eat in the entire weekend there. We enjoyed the gas fireplace. This family owned business has competitive rates. We will return for our annual snow play weekend next year. Best wishes to Mallard Bay Resort.

My boyfriend and I just stayed here this past weekend, and I had to share what a wonderful time we had. The staff was not only accomodating, but extremely friendly. What with it being so nice out, many of the other hotel guests, along with the management staff, were mingling outside and having a great time. We've never met a nicer bunch of people, especially considering that we only stayed for one night! We're definitely planning on returning and staying here again.

What a great place to stay! We spent nearly a week at this resort and can only complain about the fact that we had to go home. Our room overlooked the lake and what a beautiful view it was. The staff was extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. My son had a great time fishing off of the resorts' boat dock and swimming in the lake with some of the other friendly guests at the resort. Can't wait to book another stay at this wonderful place!
Thanks Mallard Bay Resort!

What an amazing place. The welcome was warm and inviting and our stay was one great moment after the next. Our condo was nicely appointed and the breeze off the water cooled our place nicely as we enjoyed breakfast in our kitchen and dining area. Lunches and dinners can be enjoyed at one of the many great restaurants in town (a healthy walk or quick drive) or al fresco in the shared courtyard where there are two barbeques for your cooking needs. When the sun goes down, ask Eric to light the huge outdoor fireplace where S'mores can be cooked to perfection and friendly conversation goes long into the night. There was a swimming pool with a large sunning deck, picnic areas, a volleyball court, shuffleboard court, ping pong table, a dock for fishing or to tie down your boat, and plenty of chairs under shady pine trees to just kick back and relax. My five year old pulled up her first fish using her Barbie fishing pole and a worm! The long weekend we spent here was filled with picture perfect moments. Thanks for the great memories - we will certainly return!

We organized 7 families to go with us for 4 days and we all had a fantastic time. Mallard Bay is always clean. It is not fancy, but we don't expect that in the mountains. This resort is on the lake in a beautiful alcove that does not get too much boat traffic. The kids all fish off the docks and jump in the lake, swim in the pool, that was 84 degrees the whole time and we cooked smores everynight in the large stone fireplace after we had group barbeques in the main courtyard. In addition, we organize our own ping pong tournaments have all become addicted to shuffleboard, (those tournaments are almost as fierce as the Volleyball games we have) and even have dodgeball. We are a very active group.

If you are looking for a good old fashioned vacation with your family you will not do better than Mallard Bay. The owners go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable.

I read some of the negative reviews and they do not ring true. The guy complaining about the electricity in January must not realize that you can lose electricity anywhere when there is a major storm. We had 33 people up there MLK weekend with no problem. I wonder what that guys real problem was.

I would not recommend this place for swinging singles. This is a safe and happy haven for families to create magical childhood memories for their kids. It is perfect for groups, as everyone can be together but have their own cabin for privacy.

Thank you Eric and Monique for always making our twice a year vacations special. You and your beautiful family are dear to us all.

As a footnote, we've have been to Mallard Bay 8 times with 7 different groups in the past 3 years and have not encountered any of the problems/complaints mentioned in the negative reviews listed on this site.

  • Liked — The access to the Lake and pool. We had about 17 kids with us, so they were well entertained.
  • Disliked — None

I looked up the place on Trip Advisor. We usually go with the dog and kids to Pine Knot which was booked. Let me start by saying that I will NEVER return. The kitchen had a notice on it that said, "do your own dishes and put them away". If I wanted no room service I would have gone camping (which i exactly what this was like). The bathroom upstairs in the two room place was clean, the walls were paper thin, and the furniture dated. Downtairs was another story. It looked like it had water damage: vinyl coming away from the walls. The whole place felt like a modular building (mobile home) that had seen better days. I guess if you knew you were camping and had all your family around it might be bearable, but if you are looking for a cozy retreat - go look down the street.

  • Liked — Cheap, but not worth it.
  • Disliked — dated, shaby

I'm sorry your stay was so unpleasant. The
weather that weekend was abysmal....first
the heavy rains, then the snow. Hopefully you
weren't disturbed by the guest who kept
driving in and out of the complex at 2AM
because he was angry with the weather. We
had a full house of over 50 guests and it is
unfortunate that some people are so rude.
My apologies if you were expecting a place
with room service. We don't advertise it,
nor do we provide it. All of our units have
full kitchens with refrigerator, sink, dishes,
stove, microwave, etc. Most guests appreciate this, as it saves on the cost of eating out. As with all lodging, ours is subject to a certain amount of wear and tear, and we
have a regular maintenance and repair
program to take care of problems. Thank you for sharing your concerns, as this will help us
in deciding our priorities for upgrades.

This place is the worst. I have no idea what the other reviewers are thinking, I think the owners of this hotel are the only people that rated this so called "Resort". This place is down in the dumps. Every thing is old and dirty. No Electricity! Worst hotel I've ever stayed at, I think the owner came in TripAdvisor and rated his own hotel cause this place sucks!

It's unfortunate that your group was staying
here during the heavy rains and snow. There
is always a chance for a power outage when
we get weather like this. You might have noticed when you were driving in and out of
the complex at that the entire street was
blacked out, not just our complex. Most of our guests find the rooms to be of adequate size. It doesn't work real well when you try to put
eight people in a four person unit, so I can
imagine it felt a bit crowded. There seems to be some confusion regarding our use of the word "resort". The dictionary definition is "a
place that provides recreation to vacationers".
Since we have the pool, lake, boat dock, snow play area, sledding hill, ping pong,
vollyball, shuffleboard, etc., we felt it was an appropriate term to use.
