“A very special place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

We arrived cold and fed up to the warmest welcome we have ever received anywhere in the world. Claude Hubert was at the gate to greet us as cherished friends (we hadn't met previously), and so our stay at this incredible hotel began. The chateau was a warm haven of hospitality in the freezing French countryside. There were blazing fires in the three reception rooms, our bedroom at the base of the 1,300 year old stone tower was spacious, warm and beautifully furnished with generous drapes, the most comfortable bed and gorgeous antiques. The generously sized ensuite bathroom had a full bath, plenty of fluffy towels and smart toiletries. We enjoyed Christmas eve dinner at Chateau du Portail, sitting at a table set with beautifully themed linen, gorgeous antiques, fine china and precious crystal in front of the fire. Claude Hubert cooked the three course meal which was out of this world although very reasonably priced. Guests are made to feel at home, the elegant reception rooms are lined with a huge array of books, stunning pictures and priceless ornaments, a grand piano is there to be played, and an open bar is available to help yourself. Nothing is too much trouble for Claude Hubert, he made lunch reservations for us, called the tourist attractions to check opening hours as it was Christmas, he wrote down directions and suggested nearby towns and sights such as Leonardo da Vinci's house that we might enjoy. Breakfast at Chateau du Portail is a sumptuous feast of home-made yoghurt and preserves, local breads, brioche, fresh fruit and home-baked croissants. This hotel was a special experience that I am so grateful to have had. We were sad to leave.

Room Tip: The room at the base of the tower is comfortable, easily accessible, quiet and sumptuously furnished...

We had a four week holiday in France in September 12, and this was definitely a highlight. We were warmly greeted on arrival by Claude with a delicious mid afternoon snack and white wine by the pool and it just kept getting better. A spacious room, comfortable bed and an ensuite with a bath tub to relax in after a day visiting the nearby chateaus. I would highly recommend having dinner here as the three or four course meals were amazing and Claude a wonderful host. We stayed three days and unfortunately had tours booked for the full day everyday, if I were to do it again I would allow for some time to just relax in the beautiful Chateau du Portail. Thanks for a great time Claude.

I was in this chateau 3 days including Christmas with my couple and it was a unique experience. More than being in a hotel, we felt like being in the house of a cousin. Claude's care of us as a closed relative and he made our stay unforgettable.
The house is full of old family furniture and priceless things. the room was spacious and lovely decorated.
Additionally the chateau is closed to the most important Loire chateaux and a great base to discover this wonderful area of France.
Book here and you will never regret!!!!!

To call this place a 'B and B' is like calling the QE2 a trans-Atlantic ferry. Every room is unique, every wall tells a story.

This is Claude's house. Four generations of furnishing, artefacts and history are crammed into a a lovely, compact Chateau surrounded by a moat, parts of which were built 500 years ago. He makes you feel as though you have borrowed it for your stay. What's more he can cook classical French cuisine with a modern twist.

Claude's attention to detail is superb. Do not be put off by the fact he may have only one sock under his paisley loafers - this a due to his Jack Russell pup, Cleo, who has one of the best private collections of single socks in France, discreetly displayed under some of the most comfortable beds we have slept in.

For my birthday, my girlfriend took us to this chateau for a night in the master suite. Everything about this place was romantic, charming, and everything that we could have asked for. Claude, the chateau host, was exceptionally kind and accommodating with everything. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with glasses of champagne and a warm fire. Even at the marvelous 4 course dinner, Claude went out of his way to present my dessert with a sparkling birthday candle.

This was my first time in the Loire Valley and I will certainly be going back. The chateau is beautiful, full of antiques from all around the world, and some of them you're even able to buy! (If you feeling like taking a memento back with you)
5 stars all around! And a BIG thanks to Claude from Ron & Haleigh if you read this!

Room Tip: The suite is romantic, sophisticated and private. It also has a beautiful bathroom.

My wife and I just finished our fourth visit at Chateau du Portail, and each visit has been memorable. The owner of the chateau, Claude Hubert, is the consummate host and is passionate about making each visitor's experience special. The chateau is superbly decorated with wonderful antiques and has the taste, style and warmth that is often missing from the more formula driven decor offered by many members of the Relais & Chateaux association.

We highly recommend Chateau du Portail and look forward to our next visit in 2013.
