Ever wondered what happened to the crew of the ill-fated “Marie Celeste”? I can enlighten you. They went off to run the Hotel les Elfes in Notre Dame de Bondeville which is a small suburb of Rouen in France. We had an advance booking for one night there and turned up around 4 p.m. to find a completely deserted hostelry. A “post-it” note on the door told us that it would be open at 6.30 p.m. But the front door was already open so, because we had a reservation, we went in. There was no one in Reception; it was an empty lounge/dining room; ne personne bustled in the kitchen and nobody lurked in the outhouses. A staff building at the back was equally void of humanity. The Management obviously paid scant regard to their own security or their guests’ possessions since any passing criminal with a furniture van could have emptied the place. We contented ourselves with snaps of the empty premises to show the world that the Marie Celeste crew had gone and done it again. A note was left (in case they, or new owners, ever turned up) and we contacted the Logis de France organisation - through whom we had booked – to call it quits and find us somewhere else. They came up with Hotel le Grand Cerf in Neufchatel and you’ll find our review of it somewhere. I have to say that it was a bit of a relief not to have stayed at Les Elfes because the car park looked a tad unsafe and the derelict building next door, coupled with the general area, didn’t inspire confidence.
