“Wonderful family holiday.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We visited Alcantara Resort in August 2012 for a week.
It is a lovely location away from the crowds of Taormina - yet within an easy drive. Similarly Mount Etna and Catania are also both easily accessible. Less well known, but stunning and well worth the visit - are the Alcantara gorges - within a 15 minute drive.
The accommodation are all little villas with either roof or ground level terraces, so great for families where the kids have separate but linked rooms. They were spotlessly clean and in great condition.
The staff were all superbly friendly and made the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 children aged 7 and 9) feel really welcome.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Alcantara Resort - it is really superb.

The Alcantara resort is located in the eponymous valley a short drive from the east coast of Sicily on the outskirts of Gaggi, a small town of little tourist interest. A few of its less than illustrious blocks of flats overlook the resort and the main road is clearly audible. Both of these detracted from the rural idyll, represented on the other side of the compound by some cows. We suspect our bovine friends were responsible for attracting some flys and, possibly, the occasional mosquito we encountered.
The rooms, 3 to a block (one above two smaller rooms), are well constructed, adequately furnished and comfortable, although they lack wardrobe and drawer space, suggesting the short stay rather than a week or more (our sojurn). Air conditioning functioned well, although water pressure disappeared for short periods during the day. Generally the resort was clean, and well kept with due care and attention paid to the garden (space between rooms) and the swimming area.
The restaurant was somewhat lacking in atmosphere and, more to the point, lacking in culinary excellence. The food served for the evening meal was rustic and did not approach Italian fine dining in the least. Many of the ingredients appeared to have had their origins in the deep freeze rather than the local market. There was thus the distinct impression of cutting the corners when it came to the set menu (our half board option). For Euro 25-00 a head, this was underperforming for a hotel whose restaurant overheads are subsumed by the hotel and, therefore, does not have the overheads of a self supporting restaurant. (Hotels of a comparable standard we have stayed at did significatly better in this area.)
Other small irritations such as not replacing the shampoo/shower gel in the bathroom were certainly not in line with the 4 star rating. Staff, on the other hand, were most friendly and accomodating, especially the waiter who clearly detected our dissatisfaction with the cooking.
You need a car to get the best out of the region as there is little immediately in the vicinity to interest the holiday maker. Etna and the Alcantara gorge are within easy reach as is the attractive tourist trap of Taormina.
Not a bad place to spend a few days for a short break, but definitely a questionable resort for the two week summer holiday. Best used as part of a tour of Sicily, I suspect.

Room Tip: Choose at least a Superior room to get a spacious room for two with a good sized balcony.

We loved this place. It was the only 4 star hotel on our trip through Sicily, Calabria and Tuscany, but it easily outclassed the other properties, which were all 5 star. The resort is set in a beautiful garden, perfectly landscaped and maintained. It escapes me how they keep the grass so fresh and green in high August when the whole Sicily feels like a desert. But they do. You live in simple but nice houses, each with its own terrace. Very quiet, absolutely no disturbance from the other guests. The pools (one small, one mid-size) are lovely and they never felt crowded, in spite of the August holiday fever. The staff is extremely friendly, they joke with the kids, they absolutely have the can-do attitude which you don't always find in Europe. You can see Etna from the hotel grounds and you can walk to a grocery store in Gaggi, and if you wih, you can drive to the insane hustle that is Taormina, but when you are at Alcantara, it's quiet. It was a good base to explore Etna, Taormina, Siracuse, yes we even drove to Agrigento and it was great. My only complaint would be that the pool time ends at 7 pm which feels too early. We did not know about the rule on the first evening and the kids took a swim, but no one gave bad looks, which is in line with the friendly attitude of the place. Just make it 9 pm guys.

Room Tip: They are all fine. It's a small place. There were cows grazing just beyond the fence and you cou...

Truly enjoyed our 3 nights stay in our ground-floor double room with view on the pool and the Etna. The staff of the resort ensured that all guests enjoyed throughout their stay, including kids (and our one-year old son Olivier).

The room was very clean, nicely decorated, and had a proper terrace. The food was great (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and again the service was outstanding. Our one-year old boy felt almost at home, thanks to the friendly staff.

Great location to explore Taormina and the surroundings of East-Sicily.

My husband and I went to Alcantara Resort on the advise from my sister and niece and we are so happy we did. It is a beautiful oasis with wonderful staff. Luigi, Melissa, Angelo, Angelo, Dario and the rest made us feel like family! They were always smiling and always willing to help. They even cleaned our laundry when we asked. Our room was beautiful and had everything we needed. It was on the 2nd floor and had a beautiful view of the resort and the surrounding area of Gaggi. The grounds are beautiful, with the cabanas sprinkled throughout. We observed the staff maintaining the grounds daily and keeping everything perfect.
The pool area was our favorite, with Angelo bringing us whatever we wanted to eat or drink as we relaxed. You can see Mt Etna in the distance from your lounge chair. The pool itself is great with a jacuzzi and smaller pool for kids. The morning buffet was more than ample and great food. We ate dinner at the resort restaurant and also enjoyed great food and service then. There was even a confirmation party there one evening and it was fun to watch the festivities. The staff handled the restaurant and the party very well.
The resort was only about a 10-15 minute drive to the beaches which made it a great retreat at the end of the day. It was also a good place to have a base camp as we explored Sicilia. The staff was able to give us great advise on places to visit both tourist and not.
We will definitely return in the future to this beautiful and fun resort.

Room Tip: Ask for and upper room for a better view

We spent our last 3 nights in Sicily at this hotel and it was the best by far. It is like a little paradise with its beautiful garden and swimming pool. The rooms are nice and big and decorated with great taste. Everything neat and perfectly clean. Great choice of food for breakfast and very good meals at the restaurant for a good price in comparison to other restaurants where we've been to. But the best part of this hotel is the staff, they are incredibly helpful and they really look out for you without even asking.

We are a family of 3 adults, we stayed 2 nights at the Alcantara resort. it is an easy drive from Gaggim to Taormina, to the northern slopes of mnth Ethna , or to the Alcatara natural park. The hotel is new, very clean, beatifully designed, and the staff are highly professional, friendly, very knowlegable and most helpful. Everything feels very luxurious except the price which was reasonable. breakfast was excellent, and here is my tip: have at least one dinner at the hotel restaurant. The semifredo they make is addictive!! We hope to come next time for a whole week. They have a lovely swimming pool but on May it is too cold to swimm.
