We loved this place. It was the only 4 star hotel on our trip through Sicily, Calabria and Tuscany, but it easily outclassed the other properties, which were all 5 star. The resort is set in a beautiful garden, perfectly landscaped and maintained. It escapes me how they keep the grass so fresh and green in high August when the whole Sicily feels like a desert. But they do. You live in simple but nice houses, each with its own terrace. Very quiet, absolutely no disturbance from the other guests. The pools (one small, one mid-size) are lovely and they never felt crowded, in spite of the August holiday fever. The staff is extremely friendly, they joke with the kids, they absolutely have the can-do attitude which you don't always find in Europe. You can see Etna from the hotel grounds and you can walk to a grocery store in Gaggi, and if you wih, you can drive to the insane hustle that is Taormina, but when you are at Alcantara, it's quiet. It was a good base to explore Etna, Taormina, Siracuse, yes we even drove to Agrigento and it was great. My only complaint would be that the pool time ends at 7 pm which feels too early. We did not know about the rule on the first evening and the kids took a swim, but no one gave bad looks, which is in line with the friendly attitude of the place. Just make it 9 pm guys.
