“Very nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2013 via mobile

We enjoyed Haast and the Collyer House. We didn't meet the owner, but that was OK. Sandra was informative and even though she was a novice, she made a good breakfast. The house is very nice, especially with the fireplace and big windows. The other rooms were better than ours, but all of them were overpriced, comparing with other places we stayed. I was a little disappointed...had been looking forward to it. Thought it was right on the beach, but we could not even find a way to get to the beach until we were leaving the next day. Interesting place.

This is a very nice B&B with a touch of quality. Bedroom was very comfortable, as was the dining and lounge rooms. The fill-in hosts that were there when we visited were excellent. Breakfast was delightful. We stayed here to break the journey between Fox Glacier and Queenstown. A 30 min drive to Jackson Bay is well worthwhile for the views. Otherwise, it is a bit remote.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

I was absolutely delighted with the Collyer House. It is very clean and nice and in a beautiful spot with a lovely view of the Tasman Sound. I was welcomed kindly and treated very well by our hostess, who is very knowledgeable about the area, her family having been early settlers. My fellow guests were very kind, taking me under their wings. I received a very good recommendation on a place to eat (the Cray Pot) and had a very, very adequate breakfast. The grounds are absolutely stunning and a delight to both eye and soul. I cannot say enough good about Collyer House.

Looking for a B&B between Greymouth and Queenstown, we found this on TA and were impressed with the comments on Neroli and especially her breakfasts! We arrived to find that Neroli was leaving for a while and Sandra had arrived the day before to take over - with no previous B&B experience. We were to be her first guests - our hearts sank!
However within a few minutes we realized all was well - Sandra has a super personality and was a natural for the job! We had tea, then she was on the phone to fix up a place for our dinner, then we shared wine and great conversation when we returned. And breakfast the next morning was excellent....
Collyer is a terrific house in a great natural setting - ok, it's a little off the beaten track, but it's well worth the journey.

We had ventured over the Haast from Wanaka to see Jackson's Bay - and chanced upon Collyer House. Neroli is a member of a family who have been here since the early settlers struggled to make their way - and her family has been involved with every aspect of economic development in this isolated place. She has many stories - and some wonderful photographs - she is a talented photographer. It was special to sit in front of her roaring fire and share a little of this wonderful spot with her. Our room looked out over the sea, the beds were comfortable - feather pillows and duvets - and the breakfast perfect. If you stay here, do not miss the short walk to the south through the marsh and lowland forests - we were thrilled by the cacophony of birds!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the sea! The rooms have their own deck, which would be wonderful with a glass of...

We arrived here in a state of consternation as we'd just discovered the Haast Pass was closed and we needed to re- plan the end of our NZ trip which had involved traveling on to Queenstown for our last 2 nights and return flight home, now no longer possible. Neroli was very helpful in our quest to sort things out. And she'd cooked us a lovely dinner which was very welcome after a long day.
Most of the evening was spent in the lounge which had a great log fire, which was just as well as our bedroom was definitely on the cold side, even with the heater provided. I was expecting that, for the price, our room would have been either a little larger or more luxurious, or even both, which is why I'm just giving it 4 stars. Also, the breakfast was fine, but not remarkable considering the total cost.
It is a great location, and I'm sure that in the summer, when the cold is not a problem and the outdoor facilities are useable, it's an ideal place to stay. Neroli was a wonderful hostess although it would have been nice to have been offered a welcoming beverage after a long rainy drive.

This lovely warm welcome accompanied by a roaring log fire and superb local food is in the most unexpected place,in true wilderness looking straight out to the emptyness of the South Tasman Sea. A totally unexpected haven for even a seasoned Kiwi traveller like me.The World Heritage Wilderness Park of South Westland is without doubt the greatest of our treasures and having been lovingly tender by a committed army of DOC workers and volunteers its birdlife is returning and in the evening at Collyer House you can hear them going to sleep.Even our shy rare fernbird is in abundance. What a treasure! After a sùmptuous breakfast before the real log fire you can walk straight out to the tidal inlet frequented by rare waders and both Kotuku and Royal spoonbills. Then a very short stroll takes you to the entrance of the river and the untamed beach and Tasman Sea. A backdrop of towering peaks covered by bush but topped by snow this is probably one of the most incredibly diverse environments on earth. This is a place you will want to return to time and again.
