Ascona is the kind of place you wish no one else had discovered and you could have all to yourself... it has the easy atmosphere of nearby Italy, with all the cleanliness and clockwork of Switzerland. This hotel is the same.
From the courtyard with it's little fountain to the spectacular rooftop pool with the most breathtaking view of Ascona (from anywhere!), there is no better place (dare I even say, in Switzerland...?) to stay than this. Yes, I know: it's all relevant to what you are looking for; if you want the 5 star 300+ room hotel with the doorman in a uniform and 6 restaurants, you won't like it here. However, if you want people who will do what they can to make you feel welcome, and want to see a splendid show (where the owner and his daughter - by the way, what a voice - play in the evening entertainment Jazz band in the courtyard on the weekend), stay here. Ascona has a great variety of restaurants (many linked to a hotel), but "staying in a night" at the Riposo will not do any harm. I have stayed here various times, and have seen different types of rooms - all are fine to spectacular (the best being those that have the panoramic windows overlooking the rooftops of Ascona). And you are virtually a half a minute away from the promenade.
I understand the past reviewers frustration if he went through what he said he did (I for one always got the response I needed and I have been here 4 times). Let me give all a little tip - book in advance as soon as you know, because I have had the experience of calling and finding out that the hotel is sold out. Remember it isn't a large property, and it thankfully is not part of any chain. Have your evening stroll after dinner, find a bench overlooking the lake and watch the moon on the water, and then look forward to heading back to the Riposo.
So for my perspective (and I stay in hotels every month due to my line of work): the food is fantastic, the service is superb, the pool is picture perfect, the entertainment is exquisite, the rooms are rememberable, and the ambience... well, this is the definition of ambience.
