“Location +, Breakfast -”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

The location of the hotel is amazing!
Very close to the central station but still in a lively square in front of the lake with a beautiful view!

The restaurant of the hotel has good food, but don't expect to spend less then 30-40 euros per person in a meal - for meat it's even more.

The breakfast is good, but with a poor variety: pretty much the same every single day. You need to ask for water, it's not available in the breakfast table. Sometimes if something runs out (ham, cheese or bread for example) you have to ask them to refill it, because they usually don't notice it very quickly.

The staff is very nice, smiley and polite. Love them! - however, only some of them speak Engish. You will be fine if you speak Portuguese (and French, obviously).

Room cleaning is ok, no issues.

I would definitely recommend the hotel in case of short stays.

This is a restaurant popular with local and tourists alike which also as a selection of rooms.

It is located close to the lake and many rooms have lake views.

If the weather is nice you can eat outside.

We stayed for 3 nights in April and had one of the lake view rooms, each is different and ours was the Venice themed room with a Gondola coming out the wall. We had a large bedroom with TV and adjoin g dressing area with table and a separate bathroom and shower.

The rooms are not as plush as one may expect but they are clean and acceptable. As with most places in this region prices are not cheap and we were paying 300 swiss franks a night for B&B which included the local TVA (tax).

The hotel is run by Anne-Christine Meylan and all the staff are both friendly and helpful.

In fact in the cellar area they have some very interesting clocks on display. We later learned the the watch and clock store next door Meylan was run by the owners husband. That is well worth a visit.

Vevey is a very quaint and pretty town and worth a visit and a stay would be even better. It offers a more relaxed take on life and as it is only about 1 hour from Geneva itself could be a better place to be based.

We needed an adapter and that was provided without fuss.

We booked in for an evening meal and were not let down as the food was both plentiful, tasty and of superb quality. It was also nicely presented.

They have 3 eating areas the main restaurant, a bar area and cellar area. In the main area the chef cooks steaks etc on an open plan log fire.

Prices are not cheap and one could have a Pizza at a nearby Pizza place for a quarter of the price you would pay here but the Pizza quality was superb in an atmospheric room.

Breakfasts were taken in the cellar and what a large choice one had. The usual cereals, fruit juices were available with a selection of fresh breads, and jams, yogurts and a selection of cheese and meats and various home baked quiche flans. Then one could also have fresh brewed coffee or tea so one was not going to be hungry. We asked for croissants as none could be seen and "Voila" they were served up in a basket.

It was quite an experience to stay at this hotel. They have theme-rooms which I find really cool. I stayed at Colonial-styled room which was great! I need to say that lack of toilett door was a bit of surprise (!) but there was same kind of a furniture that separated the toilett from the rest of the room. The furnitures were really different from I've experienced to date. Chairs were netting-style, huge mirror at the center of the room, a balcony with Geneva Lake view - awesome. At the ground floor there is a restaurant but olthough I kept my windows open I didn't hear much of a noise. The reception stuff was average I would say. They didn't care to much and I didn't expect them to do so. For someone it's disturbing but not for me. The location is awesome as you can see the mountains covered in snow and the lake between them. I recommend this hotel for sure.

Room Tip: Find the best room theme suitable for you and go there!

The hotel's location was perfect for us: Right on the market place and the lake (ship station "Vevey Marché"). To the back of the hotel you have Vevey's pretty little old town with its shops and restaurants, and the train station is only a quick 7 minutes walk away.

The area is very expensive for hotels, so we were not surprised at the room rates, nor at the smallish sizes of the rooms for the money. We had three rooms, one superior and two standard doubles. All rooms were decorated differently and lovingly, with much detail and charm if not luxuriously. We had the "Chalet" room (superior double), which is located at the front of the house overlooking the market place and had a very narrow balcony (enough to stand and sit next to each other). We also had "La Design" and "La Chinoise", rooms facing the side and the back of the house. The standard doubles are quite small for two people, we used them as singles. Notes: the La Chinoise had an open bathroom, with only a curtain separating it from the room, the "La Design" was at the top of the house, as was the "La Chalet". There is no lift, and the stairs are quite steep and narrow. We arrived early and left our luggage there, as the rooms were not ready yet. It was all carried up to the rooms by the time we arrived, but we did have to carry it down upon leaving. It was no problem for us, but may be something to bear in mind for others. I think the staff would always help with that, if asked beforehand.

We all had very comfortable beds and we slept well, there was not much noise from outside (it being rather cold and not many people out). On summer nights the bars in the vicinity may be more busy and their guests more audible - as the would be in a hotel so centrally located. Inside the house, you could hear people coming up the stairs very well, but once they were inside their rooms, there wasn't much noise. Breakfast was in the former wine cellar (La Cantina) and the standard fare with some extras like home made tarts. Very good coffee.

The staff was nice and helpful, though seemingly a bit stressed. It may have been because of the event they were also organising the weekend we spent there (hydroplanes).

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view, although that does come at a price. If you have problems with stairs, ask for a...

We love the Hostellerie de Geneve. By Vevey standards it is very well priced and the staff are friendly and welcoming. We are a family of five and we found that the children were very welcome. The breakfast was an authentic Swiss treat. We really enjoyed having beautiful Gruyere cheese with the yummy crusty baguette (plus all the usual cereals, coffees and hot chocolates).

Our two adjoining rooms were gorgeous. Both were themed, one red and one blue. Both very recently renovated and delightful. Everything was impeccably clean. The views of Lac Leman and the Place du Marche were straight out of a postcard. We were able to sit on our balcony and soak up the fabulous atmosphere.

The Hostellerie reception staff gave us all a complimentary Riviera Card which gave us free public transport on a number of bus routes and other handy discounts. We used ours to go on the bus to the Chateau de Chillion which was about 15 minutes away. So nice to have our sightseeing facilitated.

We had dinner in the pizza restaurant on our first night and the lovely staff made sure we had a great table even though we had not had the opportunity to reserve a table in advance. We can't wait to return!

The price is average, if not a little below average for Switzerland.
My room on the 2nd floor was correct, with a good mattress.
The breakfast is very nice, with excellent homemade jams.
And finally, the situation is great, just in front of the lake

We always knew that Switzerland was going to be expensive but manners cost nothing! We found the hotel staff quite unhelpful. We were on the 3rd floor and with no lift and copious amounts of luggage, this was no easy task! Considering how expensive the hotel was, we were quite shocked that we were not allowed to use an iron. We were only permitted to leave our laundry in to be washed, dried and ironed (at a charge of course!) Also, the staff refused to clean our room because we had the audacity to still be in bed at 11am! We had friends who were staying at the hostel across the square (at a fraction of the price) who had a much more enjoyable and friendly stay). The hotel claimed to have free wi-fi which I wasn't able to get in our room. Instead I had to use the free wi-fi available in the square by hanging out the window. The general rudeness of the people in Vevey have ensured that I will never visit there again!
